Do not forget to connect the GND line, especially on an isolated CAN interface board, otherwise you might run into the same problems as before from floating potentials damaging your IO stages. Differential signaling does not mean GND free signaling. Pull your isolated GND plane of the IO board to a known potential. I had enough problems of this kind to solve as an hardware development engineer in industrial metering industries.

Usually it works on on isolated stages since the GND potential will be defined since most transceiver ICs have protection diodes which will pull the GND potential to the lowest pin and the current required to do so is tiny. Sometimes there is even a external resistor network that usually bias the CAN_H and CAN_L lines to a reference point of the transceiver but would probably also create a defined GND potential from the incoming signal if it weren't connected. (It's far from ideal but it usually works when capacitance to the non-isolated power rails is low enough) Since the previous CAN hat however wasn't isolated this won't work. In an ideal case the current will be low the diodes will use the CAN_L line as a sort of ground, but even in this case while there won't be any damage due all benefits of the differential signal are lost and noise will interfere with communication. In the worst case as you mentioned it will damage IO stages. PS: In the last video about the CAN Hat at the end he actually said "You most likely don't need ground". Which is of course a wrong assumption to make. I think people mix "quasi/semi-differential" (like CAN, RS485, etc.) with real differential signaling like in Ethernet (where the reference is decoupled via magnetics/transformers).

@@Ether_Void well explained, thank you 🙂!! We engineers have already built in a lot of safety nets so that the shit works well even under adverse conditions 😎. Hopefully noone takes those technical safety nets as a valid excuse to leave the GND connection open, just because it might work. Modern people are always so careless because all the modern safety nets always catch them when they fall off the thightrope. Then they use a lawyer to sue anyone who didnt tell them that you can hurt yourself when you fall off the tightrope.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia As mentioned (in my rather convoluted and long comment) this is somewhat expected when the driver is isolated since the bias circuit and/or protection diodes of the driver take care of that. But I still think the issues with the previous CAN-Hat that wasn't isolated came from a missing ground connection so it depends on too many other factors if the CAN signals are in a voltage range that the driver can still detect.

Hi Andy! The manufacturer of the charge controller (Not Victron) says that I cannot connect two similar charge controllers in parallel so that they receive power from the same wire that comes from the solar panels, but I can connect them both in parallel to charge the same battery, as long as both controllers get their own power from different circuits. But: No one has yet explained to me why they must not be sharing the same circuit, although I have asked the experts. This idea came about because I already have a charge controller, the capacity of which may not be enough for the power produced by the current panel when the sun is shining on a cloudless, frosty day in winter and when there is snow on the ground everywhere reflecting the extra sunlight. The charge controller manufacturer said that the controller is damaged by too much current from the panels, in addition to only being able to withstand a certain voltage. So I originally thought that by getting another similar charge controller I would fix it: One pair of wires from the solar panels 60 meters away - I share it for both charge controllers to the "PV" terminal and take power from them by connecting both "BATTERY" terminals and take them to the battery via a suitable fuse. I wouldn't want to uselessly divide the panels into two circuits and then spend money on two wires (+/-) (+/-), because even one pair can withstand the current coming from the panels. Maybe You Andy will check out this issue... Thank you!

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Thank you Andy. You have the opportunity to test the nature of this "fight" because you have multiple Victrons of the same type. Connect two Victrons in parallel to "fight" for power from the same panel array. Do it and we can learn what it's really like! When I ask Victron's European headquarters, they pass my question to the importer, who can't explain it... Since I'm not very good at English (I use google translator all the time) I don't really know how the MPPT controller "drives" the panels - as you wrote. My sense says that the panels do what they do regardless of the controller, but the controller makes the current coming from the panels as large as possible, lowering the charging voltage suitable for the battery. My imagination says that I want to have a charge controller that always drives the panels directly towards the sun :)

  • @OffGridGarageAustralia

Happy New Year! That will most likely not work. You can only connect one BMS to the Cerbo/Pi. If you have several batteries with their own BMS each, they need to communicate all data to the master BMS which aggregates the data and sends it to the Cerbo. So, all BMS need to be the same brand and compatible to each other. Be aware that Pylontech uses a 15s battery design, not 16s as all other batteries.

We've upgraded the batteries in our BMW i3's and I have rebuild the old 60Ah/22kWh packs to 12S8P and equiped each pack with a master BMS, which uses the OEM slave BMS modules on the battery modules. The SimpBMS supports Victron CAN connections. Unfortunatly I need two SimpBMS's, one for each pack, and they provide the same CAN ID - hence the newer Venus mixes them up, just like in your video from about a year ago.. Hello Andy, (from not so sunny England), kind of related to this video (CAN communication etc...), do you know if it is possible to parallel Seplos 10C BMS with Seplos v3.0 BMS? I see you have played with 10C & 10E and v3.0 on its own, but not together. I have a 10C and need another BMS quickly for a 2nd battery and the only one I can get quickly is the v3.0 (type B). Love the videos, keep up the good work.

That's definitely not possible. I have tried all combinations between V1, V2 and V3 of the Seplos BMS and V3 does not talk to anything else.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Thank you Andy. I have messaged Seplos and asked them to consider making them compatible in the future. If I want to expand my system and can’t get the older versions to match, I will need to buy many new BMS’s - great for their business but not my pocket. Could lead people to find more friendly alternatives.

@@keithhebard1728 You don't necessarily need communication between the batteries and BMS. They will work perfectly fine as standalone BMSes. Same as in my battery shelf.

Andy, I've got my JK BMS connected to my RSP4b running VenusOS thanks to your earlier video but now I'm trying to connect my PowMr AIO hybrid inverter via can H-L to the non insulated CAN hat you had on before you swapped to the double can and while I can see Error-Active in the network state with packets rx and tx it doesn't pop up as an inverter on the main page. Do you know the command to debug this so I can see the data coming in from the can hat ? Any idea why my VenusOS wouldn't automatically detect it?

I started with the double CAN board from the start when I watched the first setup and I ordered my "Peter" boards. But I did not have the proper config lines, thanks for that. My boards should be here in a few days and I can hardly wait. I got the new JK Inverter BMS working now talking to the Growatt inverter and that works great. That uses the RS485 port. Can we also use the CAN port to talk to the Raspberry PI in parallel with the "Peter" boards? On the PI Mount, I used a din rail Semi-Enclosed Enclosure Kit, Amazon number B08PZCC562 and Din C45 Rail Adapters number B0787WX58B. Works like a champ. I had posted a comment yesterday, however some moderator in their great wisdom killed it. I think it was the # symbol with a number after it they did not like.

Thanks for your question. The new JK BMS can be connected to the Pi via CAN port of the BMS and the adapter cable which has the correct pin order. Not sure if you can use the RS485 to your inverter at the same time. Usually, only one port can be used.

really, doesn't such thing depend on how often you would need these special rights ? We are not talking about a firmware update afaik but a special configuration for andi . I am not sure in which world you are living but usually the manufacturers of all such devices like central heatings, big acs and solar power are simply protecting their products and allow only installers to work on them with installer codes. That is a usual business practice in the western world at least. Happens also for inverters where you can not change major things without such code your installer might give you or rather not. This would not be a reason for me to go for a bms and for sure not for a Dali which is upgrading and communicating with inverters how ? Have not heard about that and active balancing with up to 4 A is also not the best, but I know a friend who had lost 2 Dali which needed to be replaced due to faulty or poor soldering and low quality control which meant for him that 25% of his 8 Dali for 8 batteries did not work. Quite a lot. But dali might have improved since 2020 and the first covid year, but they had lost his as their customer due to all the troubles and laziness. He had to use paypal to get the situation solved and later sold all dali after the third suffered a similiar issue with poor soldering cause he did not want to deal with the missing soldering quality every few months or so and went for SEPLOS and JK each supplying 4 batteries and 60 kWh.

My old style JK BMS forgot it's password, it was a nightmare getting a code that only worked for 30 minutes. What they fail to realise is the whole world doesn't run on Chinese time, so it was either the middle of the night hear in the UK when they were in their offoce, or I had to be at work, why they couldn't build a reset switch or jumper into the BMS I don't know!
