    Just to clarify, according to the manual, the red wire needs an ignition feed ONLY if you have a smart alternator. An older van with a normal alternator does not require this ignition feed.

    Hi there! I hope you had a great time away in Big Blue. We finally picked up our van and recommend the swivel plates, we’ve installed a single passenger seat rather than the double, just trying to work out how to lower the handbrake on the drivers side. Having seen this video after your other electrical episodes, would you say it’s best to get the CTEK instead of the split relay? We have stop/start function and aren’t too sure what will work (or not). Thanks

  • @TransitCustomCamper

    @TransitCustomCamper

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Nicci! Great news you got the van! Sounds good with with captain chairs! We might still go for a swivel base on the passenger side maybe? Not sure yet 😃 The key with the split charge system is the type of alternator. Later models I think 2014 onward have a smart alternator and would need a DC/DC charger like the CTEK as the normal (cheaper) split charge relay won’t work and therefore won’t charge the leisure battery 🥲 I think there are other units you can get but the CTEK also has solar input also which if you thinking about that now or in the future then maybe worth it. Only downside was CTEK unit was £280… the full electric kit I got was only £300! So quite an expensive bit of kit… but also I think essential really to keep the leisure battery charged up 👍

    Hi Dave. Our van is a 17 plate so it’ll likely have the Smart alternator. I’m not sure if anything electrical has been purchased yet (I’ve taken a lot of deliveries since WFH!) 🤞🏻we can dodge an unnecessary expense! Solar has been mentioned once we get the pop top fitted in November (feels like a lifetime away). We’re going to the Lincolnshire motor home show in a couple of weeks, I’m looking forward to picking up some more ideas and bits that have show prices!

    If the charger is switched on with an ignition live does that mean it starts to draw power from the main battery as soon as the ignition is on? Or does it wait for the engine to start first? I quickly scanned though the instructions and it mentions an alternator supply for the red wire, meaning it gets its on signal only when the engine is running.

  • @TransitCustomCamper

    Hi - When I have been operating I have only tested with the engine running. Also it only starts to charge the 2nd battery once the voltage is reached on the main vehicle battery as a priority. It might mean the main red wire that runs from the main vehicle battery back to the CTEK as opposed to the ignition wire. I might test just with ignition though also

If you have a smart alternator you will also need to get an ignition feed from the CTEK. This is a small thin wire. Hi - thanks for the comment and checking out the video 👍 I would double check the documents etc yourself too but it says to use 10amp. So in the fuse spur that what I used in the end. I would always say that get things checked too as I am just a DIY van builder so wouldn’t want to advise and you have any issues etc 👍

    Also sorry the wire size/gauge I am not certain as this came as part of a kit… Just looking at it appears to be around 14 AWG… again worth a check 👍 The company I got the kit from also offered great after service and answered any questions I had too I got it here through Amazon but CTEK 3mtr D250SE 12V 20AMp Dual DC-DC Battery to Battery Charger Kit with 70amp 10mm² Cable D250SA/K3 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07K8QQ6X9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_pp773Lp9LLOX7

    What number fuse did you use for the piggy back fuse. Does it have to be 10amp.

    Hey Lch - thanks for the comment on this one too 👍 I’ll check the fuse location number next time I am in the van and drop it back in. I recall it was a 20 amp fuse I did the piggy back off so I used another 20 amp to make sure 👍 Not had any issues with the above and all operating OK. I would do a check yourself too though as I wouldn’t want to give a bum steer for you 👍

    Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Only asked as the instructions says to use a 10amp and couldn’t find one.

    @@lch7417 - I didn’t read that but I would say yes if you found that it’s 10 then letting 20 though could be an issue!! You can piggy back a 20 and then use a 10 I would say for the CTEK as long as the fuses are in the correct location on the piggy back

    There's no Earth. It's a vehicle sat on rubber tyres. There's a negative return path of course.

    I didn't understand whatexactly to do at 11:20, 'taking a feed to the common earth etc. What exactly are you doing? It would have helped if you could show it rather than talking about it. A few gapsand things glossed over that means I can't follow this.

    Ah OK - yes understand. The wire was already running from negative on leisure battery to common ground on the body of the van. This wasn’t direct part of the CTEK install and more to do with the existing 12v side of the overall setup that was on my other video. I put the electric stuff in this playlist Fitting Van 12v & 240v Electrics kzread.info/head/PL4K45Imzn1H9eLynvrVKlfmDcujCkgA2i - thanks for feedback and checking out the video too 👍

    @@TransitCustomCamper Thanks for the extra info. I'll get there in the end. Your video wasn't the whole picture but certainly helped.
