    Now I have fixed a bunch of second story shower bases at some apartments because the plumbers used plumbers putty on a fiberglass base, because it was to flexible ,over time the putty cracked ,and flooded the place below it !I see your base has a cast iron base so you shouldn't have a problem with flexibility especialy if you wet set the base in a bed of morter for support, other wise with that kind of drain assembly and fiberglass base you want to use silicone. if it's on a slab or no access from underneath just be carful so as not to have it come back and haunt I had to take apart every drain in the hole complex and clean off plumbers putty and re fit ith silicone because of the flexibility issue ! Great video not trying to say it's wrong, some people may not know the difference in there shower base being metal or fiberglass ,👍🏻

    Hi Nunya...love the name 😂! Anyway, sorry to hear about the shower pan nightmares. You are absolutely correct on the fiberglass base. It flexes way too much causing all kinds of issues. I've even seen the pan itself crack because it was not properly set into a mortar base. This particular pan is heavy gauge steel and does not flex. Thanks for your comment. Always appreciated!!

    Hi there! Thank you so much for posting this! I have the exact same drain, however I am installing my own shower plan using sand and concrete mix as a preslope and a liner etc. I am thinking I may not be able to use this and have to use a flange instead? Or is a flange essentially what I would put it into like it’s the precut hole in a pan? 🤯

  • @YouCanDoIt2

    @YouCanDoIt2

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Terri -Anne! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment, always appreciated. The concept is the same but the drain is not 😂. You would need a three-piece Oatey drain such as the Oatey 130.... Not saying that that is the exact one you need. You can go on their website and check out their drains. But, a three-piece drain has an additional flange that gets installed into the sanded bed. Then, that flange will accept the Oatey drain assembly. They come as an entire kit. The 130 series might do it for you, you need to read the specs and see for yourself. Best wishes on your project 👍

    @@YouCanDoIt2 Lol thank you - that makes much more sense! I’ll have to do a swap. I have another question that I’ve tried posting on other videos about, but haven’t had a response. It sounds like maybe you’re familiar with making your own shower pan? If not, please ignore this. I am putting a sand/concrete mix down on plywood as a pre-slope. On the videos I’ve watched, they use tar paper to prevent the pre-slope from failing to bond on the plywood… my local home store only has rolls of tar paper and I only need 5’ of it. Do you think I could paint the plywood with aqua defence and it would serve to replace the tar paper? I apologize for asking you to read this… I just need to ask someone who knows lol

    @@terri-annenorwood-shaw4203 I am not an expert at the sand base. However I have seen it done several times. There is an additional layer above the tar paper and the sand / mortar base. It is a waterproofing membrane similar to a pond liner that must be installed. Your sand mortar base is porous and your tar paper will surely not hold out water. Therefore in just a few short years you will have dry rot under your shower pan due to water seeping between the grout, going down into your mortar base, and leaking around the tar paper. You will need to put that additional shower pan waterproofing membrane down after the mortar base is built up. Some of these supplies can be costly. I understand the dilemma with the tar paper. Possibly look on marketplace sites that are local to you and see if anyone is selling partial rolls of tar paper before buying an entire roll. Sometimes places such as habitat for humanity have scrap rolls left from jobs for very inexpensive prices. You may even be able to find tile and other building materials there. Our habitat for humanity has lots of that kind of stuff. Hope this information helps 👍

    @@YouCanDoIt2 hey there! So sorry I never got a notification that you had replied! I do actually have a shower liner already. I am going to do a preslope and then the liner … and then the actual slope. Today I get my new drain that you had suggested and then I just need something in the way of tar paper. I was hoping that painting the plywood with aquadefence would sufficiently prevent the plywood from sucking any moisture from the mortar/sand mix. However, I will take your suggestion and check marketplace :) thanks again!

    That is a great question! Per Oatey installation recommendations, they state that this drain assembly is good for prefab bathtubs and shower pans only. They do make a product that has a brass pipe drain assembly that is suitable for tiled floors. It installs in the same manner, but is made with brass instead of PVC. I used PVC primer and heavy duty PVC glue to attach this drain assembly to attach to the white PVC pipe. If you are using black ABS pipe as your drain pipe, then you need to use black ABS glue instead. I know that I should have done a video to show the final attachment, I apologize for that. I'm doing a new install with an Otay fitting that has a rubber seal. In my opinion it's a waste of money and difficult to get it to seal as it's designed. Problem is the drain pipe pushes the rubber sideways when you dropped the pan down on to the pipe. I'd rather just get another fitting such as the one you have because the fitting will slide over the pipe with the glue. Far easier than the one that I purchased with the rubber seal. I wish you would have showed dropping the pan down over your pipe. To me that's the trickiest part.

    So am I correct that the PVC drain Pipe shouldn’t be sticking 1” up into the bowl of the drain? I think my plumber did a lousy job on my shower drain. It collects stale water and debris since it always has a inch of water in it.

  • @YouCanDoIt2

    @YouCanDoIt2

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yikes! Your drain should be the lowest spot in the shower. I would be concerned with dry rot around the subfloor. If you have standing water at your drain location, it could eventually have a slow leak around the seal and you could be accumulating water underneath the pan, which would result in dry rot at the subfloor. If you have a crawl space under that shower you may want to have someone take a look at the subfloor near the shower and check for leaks. Thank you so much for watching, always appreciated!

  • @YouCanDoIt2

    @YouCanDoIt2

    2 жыл бұрын

    HI. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. The video that we posted prior to this one in the "bathroom remodel playlist" shows the size hole that was cut out. We used a 4" hole saw with a Milwaukee drill to cut through the sub floor. You don't have to make it that big, but it is easier to install the shower pan and make slight adjustments to the placement, if the hole is big enough, to move the pan back and forth. Once the drain was glued to the sewer pipe, we filled in the gaps with "Big Gap" expanding foam so that critters wouldn't make a home under the shower pan. Hope this information helps with your project!

I have a full playlist on "bathroom remodel", but I am also currently working on another bathroom remodel where I am flip flopping all plumbing and expanding the square footage of the master bath. Glad you are a stickler about codes...one thing to keep in mind, is if you are switching from a tub to a shower pan, you need to upsize your drain pipe from a 1 1/2" pipe to a 2" pipe due to the lower threshold in the shower pan. Most people don't know that, and it can lead to slow drainage issues and flooding. Of course, your actual sewer pipe that this all ties into should be no smaller than a 3" pipe. You can check out some of the videos in the playlist and see if any are of use to you. Many blessings on completing your project.
