Install Bluetooth music dongle to BMW Business CD head unit. 2006 BMW Z4 E85
Detailed instructions on how I removed the head unit and installed an adapter that will allow me to pipe my phone’s music through the factory stereo via Bluetooth. 2006 BMW Z4. Before the mod, my “Business CD” head unit will connect to my phone via BT to handle phone calls, but not music; this adaptor establishes a separate BT connection and pipes the music through the Aux function of my head unit (which would be the CD changer if I had one).

This was all filmed on first take and I try to be detailed; you may want to watch on 1.25x or faster.

I assume this will work on other BMW models of similar vintage and audio setup. My model has all factory audio components, no other upgrades or aftermarkets.

Can you receive calls on bluetooth? Do you have to connect to bluetooth every time?

Cool video, after you installation did your old handsfree unit still work our how did you configure to keep Handsfree and Iphone connection for music from your phone?
Good video. Just a couple of questions. I have a 2005 z4 with the same model stereo as yours and the bass from the radio and the CD is fantastic. I have heard that this adapter does not provide the same level of bass that the head unit radio and CD provides. Would you say that is accurate or do you think the bass using the adapter is similar? Second, now that you have had this about a month, do you still think it is worth it? Thanks.

That is true, about the bass response. It’s not horrible and tinny, but def not to the level a CD provides. Better quality than the FM modulator in the cig lighter that I had before. Yes definitely worth it to get the streaming functionality for not much $$ and fairly seamless connectivity, and a clean look. It’s a little funky when you’re playing through Bluetooth and a call comes in - not always sure which BT channel it’s going through. I’m happy; not looking to further upgrade to bluebus or a non-factory head unit.

Can the steering buttons change the track when you play music on spotify through the bluetooth adapter?

No it’s not that smart. It’s a BT receiver only, doesn’t talk back to the phone.
Did your car have Sirius before? My mods go from radio to CD to Sirius. I wonder if I got this if it would just say “Aux”.

No Sirius before or now. Radio/cd/Aux are the available options so this pipes your BT signal into the Aux.

I believe it would if you use the Aux mode to connect to the changer. My vehicle doesn’t have the changer so I’m not positive but I think the idea is that this dongle’s wiring harness pipes it in to where the cd changer is designed to go.
