    Thanks for posting that. A very clear explanation and the diagrams were helpful. But... "a variable resistor that limits the current..." Well, yes, the spindle IS connected to a variable resistor but that's setting a trigger point for the control electronics inside - NOT directly controlling the lamp current. Does this matter? The majority of cheaper dimmer switch are of so called 'Leading Edge' type and these use TRIAC technology. Triacs 'chop' the AC waveform - dimming is achieved by limiting the 'ON' part of the AC cycle, not its amplitude (height). You CANNOT test a triac dimmer with a simple multimeter. It's not a rheostat/potentiometer/variable resistance. Numerous KZread videos claim, falsely that you can. You can't repair them either. Best test for a suspect dimmer switch is to replace it with a known good unit.
