I might lose subscribers for this, but I believe the next wave of organic reach is going to be from writing blogs and newsletters.

They started throttling my page so bad (zero non follower views and even had a negative number on one analytic) that I started posting screen shots of it. From there they made my search feed nothing but general landscape photos. I’ve heard it’s a glitch that can last a few days. Mine lasted over a year. I started posting screen shots of that so they started showing my posts to countries like Iran and Turkey that had very little if any interest in the fishing lures I was making. I eventually left. Not sure how a company can do this to a person but there’s zero recourse available currently.

late reply, but thanks for watching.
Totally agree that Instagram has lost its way - it started life as an awesome platform for visual creatives and now my feed is full of ads for products and posts from only a handful of the accounts I follow. As for my own content there - the number of interactions has been declining for ages. So now I can't be bothered. I'd never really thought about Substack as an option even though I read a lot of substacks. The other really good thing about substack is that they don't censor content that isn't politically correct enough!

Personally im not abandoning the platform, but it’s definitely not getting as much attention anymore.
Thank you for all the helpful info and details, Dave! Will definitely check it out.

Because of the popularity on this video, I’m definitely turning it up a notch on Substack.
had never heard of it; always up for one more place to see what's what.

Only been around for a few years, but it's picking up major steam.
I hope that people see the true analytics to Instagram popularity. I rather let it die because of scammers and disrespecting viewers

Stay tuned. More content pushing out there soon, and I’ll be talking about my strategy in detail.
Great video Dave. When a company is run majorly by managers instead of producers innovation stops. I think this is what is happening with Instagram. Also i think maybe you should repurpose this video to a youtube short. I think the idea of this video is catchy enough to attract attention.
@DaveConrey

I am working on a few derivative shorts specifically for that purpose.
Thanks for the video! I never heard of Substack! I'm so fed up with all social media that I've pretty much stopped posting... which isn't good either. Do you think this would be a good platform for handmade product based businesses? As in maybe write a short piece about a particular jewelry item, and include photo and product links? I'll have to create an account and poke around a little in there and see what's up. 🙂

I 100% believe it's a good platform for that. I have a new video coming out this next week that talks about storytelling for artists and makers. In fact I'll be diving deep into this whole idea in the coming weeks because I think it really could become a game changer.

@@DaveConrey Fantastic!! Looking forward to it!! 👍👍
Currently my Instagram reels are out performing my TT vids by miles! Weird. But no one follows on Instagram anymore. However my Insta photo posts are definitely dead. Basically, I’m confused by ALL platforms right now. KZread is weird for me too!!! Arghhhh!

Yeah they are trying to make insta the new fb and that’s not why I started using it and for business they want to force us to buy ads which yeah there are times are good but not something you want to depend on 😒

Just one or two small points. Where does this big list of email subscribers come from if someone doesn't have a relatively popular KZread channel or lots of followers on social media to begin with? Doesn't this take years to build up, yet you're projecting a narrative where people are supposed to ditch traditional social media for Substack? From what I can tell you're utilising all the time you've spent on social media and transferring that to Substack,. Many people (most people in fact), can't do that, so it doesn't seem reasonable to ask people to follow your example, just to give you more traction on this new site. I think it helps if you tell the entire story and not just change to churning out marketing videos, because thats very disappointing and dishearteneing to see.
@DaveConrey

Yes, it’s true, you actually have to work and provide solid content in order to get people interested enough to subscribe to your newsletter. Also, nobody said you have to have a big list of subscribers. I have 1,500 that I’ve built over time which might be more than many people, but it’s a far cry from a big list. And yes, growing any sort of following takes time and effort, I figured that part was obvious. If you don’t have the time or not willing to put in the effort, then maybe this isn’t for you.
.....and once it does start to pop it will be good for a little while, until Zuckerberg buys it and fucks it up. Wow, I'm typing this on New Year's Day and I'm already seeing a dire future :)). I used to have an art blog and it was starting to build a little following. It was an eclectic corner where I shared my work and the things that inspired me. Then I took some advice which said "you should only post about your work and nothing else and definitely, never, ever share the work of other people and no one wants to see your amazing pictures of things you found out on your walks unless you use it directly as a reference for an artwork...." So, I started to do that and in a very short time I started to hate my blog and then I stopped posting and it has sat there, a dank mausoleum of a tribute to the days when the internet was fun and then was made unfun. Perhaps I should check out substack. Circling back to the first sentence, regardless of whether Substack works for you in the present, I believe you should have your work hosted also on your own site so that you retain ownership, regardless off what happens when your distribution platform du jour changes hands or goes under.

I'm sure he's got no interest in buying Substack because it allows for too much autonomy, and it doesn't add to their business model in a way that builds exponential growth. Substack is a slow-grow scenario for sure.

@@DaveConrey I don't know. Instagram had no advertising before Zuckerberg and now it's like a billboard riddled highway. I think any platform that becomes big enough and successful enough comes onto the radar of the internet monopolists. Zuckerberg being the biggest internet blood sucker that he is could always find a reason to buy it and stuff it up🤣. I just went and had a look at substack. I have a number of unpaid subscriptions there, mostly because I followed people's newsletters before they moved over there. I never really explored it much but I just did, prompted by your video and I think there may be potential for me to start writing about art again, so a huge thank you for the prod!
haha! my business has definitely fallen victim to the Instagram and blog zombie plague AND stopped sending emails because no one was opening and honestly i don't open the ones i get in my email either. substack sounds interesting. have you tried discord? it won't make you any money, but i use it as a place where EVERYTHING i do is there, so the people that want to stay in touch or want to stay updated on what i'm doing can go there. It also feels more like a community where all the weirdos can be weirdos together.

I had a discord channel for a short while but I think it was too early and my community wasn't into it at the time. I may try again later.
would you, or do you recommend facebook or instagram paid advertising anymore? i've used it a couple times and the first time it was AMAZING and almost all of my sales were attributed to that, but now not so much.

Here's the thing about that. I know people who are killing it with Facebook ads. I've never found the right formula, but I need to try again. I think it's definitely a possibility.
