It's a good improvement to the X3 but it still aint good in recording night time video. I use the One RS one inch edition and it's a better Insta360 video camera for both day and night time videos. Oh, the lens guards sucks. Don't use them. They add glare and ruin the video images.

Yeah, low light performance will not be great but I still have to test it more in the following days to see where it stands exactly. I’m not a fan of the RS 1” for different reasons, but the 1” sensor and lower light performance are still key features on that camera

I just bought one for my bike adventures as it’s less hassle than missing the shot on a normal action camera. The APP looks so very easy to also make small movies quickly too so a bonus.

Many thanks for the informative video, Otto. I couldn't find any information of how to hold the camera whilst recording. Meaning: Do you hold the camera with one of the lenses facing upwards or do you hold the camera with both lenses facing sideways? There must be some difference in the final results I guess. Grateful if you could explain a bit.

Hi. Yeah. I hold the camera in an upright position using a something at the bottom like a small extension stick. One lens facing forward the other facing backward

Great first initial review, thanks. I plan to buy my first 360 camera this year and this will be high on the list. Anyone know if or when they plan to release the next version of the Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch? It is out of stock at their store when I write this.

HI Otto, Great review asw usual. Have you planned to do some test with low light?. I agree your opinion and this camera is a good option to buy currently. The detail of the lens protection cover is a a good one when filming extreme sports type. Thank you for sharing with us

Hey Vincent! I only did 2 tests before making the review and because of the sensor, it's not quite pleasing, but I'm planning to test it more to draw better conclusions and there will be a follow up on this video (hoping soon)

@roninr8199 the Ace Pro has a bigger sensor (let’s more light in) than the X4 and there are other components that are not the same (although the processor is the same as I said). I didn’t include low light as I always do because I was only able to test it twice in a very casual way, so I don’t have a clear opinion about it until I get to test it more. Hoping to do that in the following days but I can tell you that the results are not the greatest

@@OttoJulian_ oh yes I got tricked. When I read it has same 5nm ai I assumed low light too would be decent. Atleast if there are no jitters in dark video then might be post processing we can colour grade. I saw someone connecting helmet Bluetooth to x4. So can you check whether any TWS BLUETOOTH gets connected with x4. Atleast we don't have to buy mic adaptor

I ordered then canceled Pocket 3 because I think my Pocket 1 is still good enough for IG. I wanted to replaced my chipped lens first Insta360. I haven’t done under water and other action shots in awhile and with the X4, I can create those again

I would say it's close to 2K now. lens guards do introduce more flares and artifacts than usual, I would only use them if it's absolutely necessary to protect the main lens

A good summary, thanks. Your explanation of reframing and resolution will be very useful to people who are not familiar with how 360 cameras work. But having watched reviews for hours, it seems to me that the improvement in resolution offered by the X4 is not the most distinctive advantage vs the X3. If you could get the colours and dynamic range of the two cameras to match, and then uploaded a video with samples from each not side by side, I bet few people would guess correctly which camera the samples came from. One reviewer posted shots of a focus chart and there the difference was considerable. But in real world shots, the resolution does not seem radically different at least on KZread. But I do agree that the overall picture quality of the X4 is a very worthwhile improvement.

Thank you Peter, always nice to have your opinion! Having used the X3 for quite some time, I do see a big difference between the 2 of them. It's not about the dynamic range or the color, there is more detail, less noise, etc on the X4. I did a few side by side tests, and used the same export settings: in every case it was very clear which video was taken with the X3 or the X4. The 8K and I guess internally (the processor) are making quite a difference.

I only use my Insta360x3 for making 9x16 reels uploaded to Instagram and Facebook. I believe max rez upload is 1080, so for me there is no benefit to get the x4, correct??

there is a big difference between videos exported from an X3 and this X4. The X4 is way better in details, it has less noise, etc. The X3 is still a good one.

I compared both cameras but not using 5.7K directly. I'm pretty sure there is going to be a difference in favor of the X4.

fogging was the complaint of X3 with lens guard. Does this occur with X4 ?

I didn't experience any but honestly I didn't use them day and night as I wasn't too happy with the final results (althought I would use them no matter what if the situation calls for extra protection)

That's a good question, in theory the RS 1 inch should be better but I think the lower resolution and older processor are not going to beat the X4 during the day. In low light the X4 will not be great.

My only gripe is that it can only do 4k/60fps in single lens mode. I'm not sure why it can't do 4k/120 in this mode, given that only one lens is being used.

Agreed. I suspect this is not a limitation inside the camera, but could be to prevent overheating, which happens to be a very hot topic when it comes to these cameras

I am getting tired of the gimbal on my Pocket 3, constantly having to re-center it. Otto how does this compare to the Pocket 3? It looks like it could fit in your pocket better also. If you shoot a 360 video do you have to hold it over your head to avoid your body being in the shot? I am thinking about selling now, it cost less but how does the resolution compare with the Pocket 3? I love how well it works in low light. Also I found out the problem with the mic on my Pocket 3 if I hold down the on button too long it will not come on, if I press it just a little it won't come on, it is very touchy!

I have received a few requests to compare this to the Pocket 3. They are different types of cameras Dean. With the X4 you will have to edit the files using their app either on your phone or your computer. Keyframes and changing views are required. So it's not like on the P3 where you will get a straight forward video ready to use. I plan to test more the X4 in low light, but my few tries with it were not the greatest, this is because the X4 has a small sensor. Regarding your body and holding it above your body: No, you don't have to do that. If you place it at your chest level, one side of the camera will see your body but the other side will see everything on the other side, but it is recommended to use the stick or at least a small tripod to hold the camera

In your experience, how was the low light performance?

I only made a couple of tests and because the sensor is not too big, low light performance is not great. I will test it more in the following days to get a better idea and have a better judgement

Fisheye is always nasty on any camera unless someone actually likes it. Yeah as I said, reframing takes away a lot of the initial resolution, but it’s better than what the X3 can do

Why aren’t my images being saved to my iPhone album in 360 images format after I chose export as 360? It’s just flat images doesn’t save with that 360 symbol and FB doesn’t support 360 images no more ?
