INSTA360 Ace Pro vs. GoPro Hero 12 vs. Dji Action 4 - Who wins the battle?!

INSTA360 Ace Pro vs. GoPro Hero 12 vs. Dji Action 4
Things have been hotting up in the Action Cam space over the last few years with GoPro now being heavily challenged for market share by Insta360 and DJI. In this video, I take an unsponsored, objective look at the key elements of the Osmo Action 4, Ace Pro and Hero 12 cameras, concentrating on the features that I think are most important. There's obviously a focus on capturing motorcycle footage, but it may also be useful for many users. So which will take the current action cam crown?

Hi! Great comparison. I just switched my GoPro 10 to a DJI action 4 because of the audio issues I was having with my GP10. But I just wanted to add that you can connect the GP to an external battery, and you won't have the need to change the battery.

@mancavemoto Would the GoPro shoot better daytime video in 5.3k over the insta360 Ace Pro's 4k despite the GoPro having a smaller sensor? If all settings were auto, basic stabilisation and vivid/vibrant colours, high bitrate h2.65 and both filming at 60fps on a sunny day, which would look better between the GoPro and the Insta360 Ace Pro??

Great video review, but I have to disagree with you on the "any of the three" being acceptable. For me the Go Pro is no longer in the frame, and I will make a video of my own on this. It boils down to 2 things, the first being significantly greater than the very important second - (1) reliability / lockups / need to reboot etc. (2) ease of disconnecting the camera while on the mount without changing camera angle. Based on these two alone the GoPro is dead. I opted for the Insta360 Ace Pro for many reasons some of which you did not have time to mention. The DJI Action 4 is clearly the winner for a motovlogger since it is lighter and cheaper and has excellent video and audio capabilities. I will give the GoPro kudos for video and audio, but if it lock up none of that matters.

I don't care for image quality at all. Even the cameras from 3 years ago excel at that. I want people to really use the cameras and ask the questions that would make the cameras really usable. - can I pair multiple cameras to the remote? - can the remote turn on / off the cameras and how long does it take to power on and be ready to record? - when I turn the camera on, do the wireless mics connect automatically (and how fast)? Or do I need to pair them again? Does the remote show when the mic is ready? - Is there a wireless microphone that can be turned on/off together with the camera? I have the Ace Pro with the Preview Remote, and I'm very disappointed with the whole package. It takes forever to turn on the camera and connect. I can't use a wireless microphone, because there's none that can be controlled with a remote (which doesn't matter, because the Ace Pro doesn't connect to it after a restart anyways). So I'm stuck with this bulky mic adapter (and I still don't understand why these things exist and why we can't have a 3.5mm jack in the camera per default. I'm actually super annoyed how there's always improvement in areas that are long good enough, but zero improvement in areas that would really be needed. I want to push a button an have 3,4,5 cameras turn on and record. In sync. With wireless mics connected. Why is this not possible yet?

Interesting, and good questions thanks. It may be the basis for another video, but I can try and answer them. 1. It appears not at this stage, the remotes i've tried (insta & dji) will only connect to one camera. 2. The insta360 and DJI definitely can, and the DJI is definitely the faster of the two 3. The DJI does, and it works really well with the DJI mic II, thats one reason i'm favouring the DJI products, they mesh together very well.

@@mancavemoto Thanks. I'm probably switching to DJI with the next camera update. Not only because of the mic, but also because I have a DJI drone and I want all the footage to be shot in DLOG, because I'm currently unable to match the color profile perfectly when mixing drone images and insta360 images. The only thing that's missing from dji is a 360 camera. But that's okay, because after the initial hype, I started using the 360 cam less often now.

Thanks for this Tony, it's great to see all three cameras in comparison. The GoPro definitely looks flatter than the other two, so I'd set that aside. For me, I think I prefer the richness and vibrancy of the Insta 360 and maybe the slightly bigger flip up screen has an appeal given my recent discovery that I need reading glasses. That said, I'd really be interested in more detail on what the various accompanying apps do, not the "post-production" side, but the camera control side. To me that makes the most sense for MotoVlogging. It's already there on my bars on my Quadlock, and the combination of a much bigger screen and some touch sensitive gloves just sounds easier, especially if using a chin mounted camera where I'd otherwise have to take my helmet off. Which of course then makes me wonder if the Insta 360 Ace might be enough of a camera after all And then I want an Insta 360 X4 too and are there any benefits to staying within the same ecosystem? And after all of that tech-spec analysis, like you say, it's not really the camera at all that makes the great content, it's the eye of the videographer, and I'm shortsighted and only ever seem to ride to Sainsbury's, so do I need a camera at all?

  • @firatsanliturk

Of the 3, I picked the Ace Pro because of its low light performance and HDR. Yes, it's heavier and more expensive but I remember how many awesome moments I failed to record because of low light conditions. Even a cloudy day in winter spells doom for your motovlogging prospects. I didn't consider the GoPro for long because in all fairness, it's a bit behind the day in terms of technology no matter how great its bright light performance be. GoPro need to up their game in all haste! DJI was attractive, but all told, the Ace Pro was still a more comprehensive package.

this is the definitive non 360 action camera comparison for motorcyclists. Pretty much all of the other motorcycle vlog comparison videos were paid by either Insta360 or DJI. I will say most people mentioned they asked to do so by those two companies which in my eyes creates a bias. At least they mentioned it I found one or two that hid the fact they were paid for a comparison. Im not surprised with the results GoPro is not innovating they are not doing quality control and I do recomend watching the company man video about gopro it sheds light on what is happening. If the GoPro13 does not make major changes I have a feeling GoPro will be aquired in the next couple of years. My only other critique, The Insta360 ace. Im not sure if its available in your country, It is a cheaper alternative to the Ace Pro I would have love to have seen how that stacks up against the other three cameras.
