APPROACH WITH CARE AND CAUTION. Don't break your computer! And don't blame me if you do. If in doubt, go to a professional.
If you have a version of this laptop with a DVD drive you must be aware that an additional screw (or more than one?) on the underside cover needs removing and you can then slide out the DVD drive!
How to open up and replace or upgrade the hard disk on a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series (P75F / P75F001 / 2GM9M A01) laptop.
The procedure takes at least 15 minutes, probably longer if you are new to opening up computers. This video shows you how to remove the lower case to access the hard disk, RAM, Wifi Card (Wireless card), BIOS battery and SSD (M.2 NGFF).

Just to clarify, with a DVD drive version, the lower right screw of the 2 screws toward the center of the back cover shown in the video releases the DVD drive from the laptop. With that screw removed and with the drive drawer open before disassembly, you can then remove the drive by pulling it out. Once the drive is removed, there are two screws visible at the entrance to slot for the drive. Remove them and then proceed to remove the back cover as the video shows. When reassembling, put the back cover on, replace the 2 screws, replace the DVD drive, then replace the screws on the back cover. (The DVD drive is designed to be electronically disconnected and reconnected with the back cover in place.)

Wow. You saved my butt. I bought a new 15 5000 with the dual drives and didn't know about the M2L3 next generation SSD harddrive card. Not only did you help me get the cover off, but you helped me realize where my primary C-drive was (the M2L3) and you also taught me where and what everything else was. My 1TB Hdd D-drive is now a 2TB SSD Hdd. Thanks a bunch!

Excellent. It's good to see the project from start to finish to get the full flow of the task. It gave me the confidence to open up my laptop and replace the disk drive with an SSD. Why oh why did Dell make it more difficlut to replace the disk drive, battery, etc with their newer models - it used to be so easy. It would put me off getting another Dell. Anyway, many thanks to people like yourself who show people like myself how to do this kind of task yourself.

Recovery of files on the hard disk: Unknown, depends what has happened to it. Does it spin, does it click? what error happens etc. SSD: Totally up to you. Pick a capacity and off you go. All depends on how many games and how large the games are etc. I'd say a _minimum_ of a 250GB SSD; likely larger if you plan to install lots of games or keep lots of video.

Having trouble getting the two screws below the CD player out. CD Tray is out, but the two small screws underneath are a bitch. My screwdrivers just spin in the slots........

Yep! You need the right screwdriver for those usually. One of the jeweller/watch fixing type ones. I use ones like this for those screws: uk.rs-online.com/web/p/screwdriver-sets/0537883

@@freename Got a nice tool kit from Amazon real quick. Came apart easy/ I liked the tweezers and skinny pallet blade. Put it back together and got the dreaded no boot disc found. I had cloned the HD. I know nothing of BIOS commands either. Gave up after going in circles an hour w google searches. Popped in a USB recovery drive I made last week and it failed after " Getting Everything Ready " stage. I am thoroughly stumped. The laptop does show the drive is there. Now what to do. By the way thanks for the great video and tips. Marty

@@meverhard The most reliable tool I've found for cloning drives is Macrium Reflect. And if it fails to boot after a clone, use the reflect USB tool to create a recovery USB and then tell it to "fix boot problems" in the restore tab. They used to have a free home version but more recent visits to the website seem to suggest they only do a trial version now :( ?

Also my colleague says the getting your computer ready can often get "stuck" at around 92% for a long time, just wait!

@@freename Do I have to take it apart again? I do think the clone was corrupted somehow. I had about 90 gigs on he old drive and it cloned in 5 mins. Said was successful though.
