What's really uncomfortable is when you take inspiration from a Sona without knowing who owns it then finding that that person is a just terrible person

If it helps, you can see your efforts as redeeming the design. As weird as it sounds, it's not the arts fault that it was made by a terrible person. You can make it better for the art's sake.

separate the art from the artist, liking rainbow furry thing doesn't equal liking r*pe/z*ophilia or whatever they did and if your end result reminds you too much of the terrible person and their character... I guess it's time to change the design a bit since the character is supposed to be your own thing

making a design that only uses natural colors will inevitably result in designs using very similar, since that is what's happening in nature too. it's hard to differentiate 3 all white arctic wolves irl too so of course it makes sense they will look similar in furry art.

My sona, a Japanese dragon, relies more on his clothing and backstory/personality. A green dragon wouldn’t really stand out otherwise, but you won’t see another late ‘70s yacht rock dragon, in an orange aloha shirt with a Navy dixie cup, that likes rum a little….too much.

Sometimes ya end up making a design that already exists eventhough ya never heard from the person before. For example: my main sona is a shiny gardevoir with a choker, glasses and sometimes wears a lab coat. Guess who I found out that fits that exact description.

I had someone steal my sona entirely and paste it into Roblox. Then the person who got art said it was from Roblox, they claimed it was their character. Markings were the exact same, even the fact that mine has a massive tail. There was even the left arm scar, which has meaning to me. All they did was change the visor color and add their own logo. That's just wrong. Moral of the story, DON'T STEAL

Also, if you are sincere with the process ya will inevitably add something of you into the character. Even if the design is very similar to another, it won't be 100% the same, it always gradually becomes unique if ya keep it as ya grow along as a person.

I got my idea from a dream, specifically one where I was what I made into my fursona. It was an odd dream, but quite clear, and there were other beings of similar design, whom were all pagan deities. It was part of my realising I was a pagan, but also the design, a sort of hybrid of Hebridean sheep, goat, devil, elk, and a puppet who is their own master. Heavily symbolic, and bearing scars I myself possessed, both physically and emotionally. It was a beautiful moment, and I was compelled to draw them immediately when I awoke. My subconscious was greatly pleased. Dreams are a marvelous source of inspiration, I daresay.

@@TheBlackMetalGoatDeer this dream was very recent; about 2 weeks ago i think, and it was a lot less extravagant than yours sounds, just a plain white… some sort of canine. The interesting part was the wings though. It had a really large pair of wings, and in the dream it was actually just a suit someone was wearing, which i got to try on after. I did have to take some creative liberties because of how vague it was, so i decided on a sort of fox, with some elements of bat. I also added some red accents, which helps quite a bit. This is still very much in development (i don’t even have a name for it lol) and will probably change a bit.

That's basically how you do design work, little cards with ideas, descriptions, and you note what you are taking inspiration from. It includes images of what the vibe, representations of what is the character, its multiple facets, abilities if any... list goes on

I remember a while back two tiktok accounts that popped up on my FYP were fighting because they both had designs based on Insane Clown Posse, naturally with them being based on something else they would end up being similar, but one person insisted that they were stealing the design. Like, friend, if you can't handle people making something similar to your design, maybe don't base it on a popular thing that anyone else could be inspired by, yeah?

One of my friends made a species, so I made one, and dead ass, someone legit took my character, drew it and claimed it as theirs. The markings and hex codes were the exact same lmao.

It also can be a coincidence. Same design and colours but different species. My fursona is a cat-dragon (or Cagon) and someone confuses me for another fursona name because the colours look almost the same.

My sona came from a jackbox session I had with my family. We were playing Champ'd Up and my sibling got the prompt "(Me) from another dimention" and I loved what they made so much that I had comissioned a proper piece from them of the same character. From there I realized that this character just seemed way too perfect for me to not give it fursona status.

Then there’s the murky cesspool of the whole fools who make an incredibly basic design and then get their knickers in a knot when someone else comes up with the same design, despite the fact that it’s not even an original idea. Like some variety of Canis that is a primary colour, or something else incredibly basic. Simply, the easiest way to make a completely original design if you wish to is to combine a lot of different things of various sorts in a cohesive way, like I did with my three fursonas, each of which is an ungulate hybrid, and each has a design that is heavily based off of the Goryō of Japanese mythology, a vengeful spirit that bears the scars they had in life, as well as that of which causes their demise. Essentially what I’m saying is, make your fursona a depiction of YOU, Then you know it’s truly original.

For example, one of mine is a Hebridean sheep, devil, goat hybrid, that has various aspects like that of a ventriloquist dummy, and buttons for irises with thick thread as pupils, and has among other scars, a red line across the neck and each wrist, in reference to a dark time in my life where I had seriously been considering ending it all after losing my faith, hence the sheep aspect. But a black sheep at that. And the puppet with no strings or hand up the back is symbolizing of how I metaphorically ate of the fruit of knowledge, realising there was no magical sky daddy, I was the master of my own destiny, and I was the one pulling the strings. And Hebridean sheep, which have four horns, are a symbol of Baphomet, as I am a pagan, and Baphomet represents balance, perfection in imperfection, male and female, light and dark, etc. the list goes on, but you get the idea, I reckon.

So glad to see a comment about this. I think most of us have had an incredibly simple sona design at some point. I had a black and white wolf dog (wow so creative 😂) I made when I was quite young, like fourth or fifth grade and drew them well into highschool. the amount of presumably children that would get so mad at me for stealing their character. Every time I would essentially sit them down and tell them, I’ve had this character for a long time and designed them as a child, it is a natural and very basic looking design. Now before you I’ve had x amount of people make the same claims as you about the same character. And then I would never hear from them again.

My fursona looks kinda like a protogen but technically isn’t one because it fits none of the criteria. For example, my character is very cat like and arrow shaped in comparison with some anime esc floof

I remember when designing my Protogen character I didn’t want to “steal” or use marking that other people used, but when I was “done” I really hated how much blue there was…but one day I was this Protogen KZreadr named Raeal The Protogen and LOVED the look on the white pack of fur on the belly, i didn’t ask first but I added that to my character and it’s brought everything together. 💙 Sure if you put my character and the Raeal’s character side by side you’ll notice the belly fur but other then add they are completely different. 🙂

Also something i wondered about is what if someone made a fursona that is literally the same as someone elses but they never knew about them..

I’m currently working on a fursuit head now. I’m afraid she looks too similar to starberry dream. I only took inspiration from her neck floof. It’s a stylized raccoon. But instead of small bear style ears, big pointy ears, and a smaller, almost kimono mouth. It does have pink on it, although it’s not the main color. And I’m afraid of people thinking that’s it’s a starberry copy cat, pun intended (starberry is a cat) But my raccoon is also dahlia themed. She’s going to have flowers in three places. As a bun on her head, the neck floof will be a flower, and the top of her massive tail. The tail will basically be a whole bean bag

There’s only so many very unique designs in the world. Its kind of inevitable that you’ll make a fursona design that looks similar to someone else. Like, I’m a red fox with blue, yellow, orange, and white accents. At first, I was worried about how “basic” my fursona design was, but then I was just like “I only live once, I want to make something that represents me and not make something unique because I have to”. I love my fursona and couldn’t have it any other way.

I have a few fursonas. The one that I associate with the most is named Edison, he is as unimaginative as it gets. He has all white fur, black hair, blue eyes. Basically his personality is meant to what's unique about him. Also he has an "S.P.Q.R" tattoo on his wrist, (I don't if that's wrong in anyway or anything) he just likes Rome. Edit:He's a folf by the way.

i made a sona using someone else's as a reference for how i wanted to do proportions for the species (stoat), so after i finished i sent the artist of the sona i referenced an ask on tumblr and they seemed super flattered!! it was such a sweet moment

My main guys in my stories are kinda basic in color scheme, but their scars and markings are unique enough to me that I don't worry about copying. I wrote my stories with my guys in mind so if anyone ever tried to lose their mind at me I'd laugh in their face bc these designs come all the way back to when I started writing. If someone runs into me and they want to talk about our similar designs in a fun way I encourage that. Thats a good fun time and I like it.

Something I’d like to ask is, if I make a fursona and it looks EXTREMELY similar to someone else’s, but I’ve never seen that fursona before and it was just a coincidence, would that be a bad thing?

Yeah… that’s the hard part of making a sona, most of everything’s been done by now.

Here's a tip that might help wit a sona creation or whatever add bits of a game or show you like into it, like for me my Protogen has pyramid tech markings on his stomach cause I love destiny 2. Hope this help you wonderful people

I know the design of my main sona was similar to another persons goat sona except mine had blue eyes except for green. Upon realizing that I changed his design really quickly. Kept the colours the same, just changed the pattern and gave him a weird little mohawk. Funny how that happened because I like his current design more. Though I wouldn’t get too worked up about another brown goat looking similar to me now.

Joining the "What Really Grinds MY Gears..." crowd for a moment, if only because I've got this really nice bike sprocket that would look SOOO much better as iron filings :P Neither of the things Beta talks about really upsets me anywhere NEAR as much as what DeviantArt did to... if I'm going to be kind, try and address the latter issue. THEY CONFLATED THE TWO AND MADE AN ART KAIJU IN THE WORST WAY POSSIBLE. Let me explain. One of DeviantArt's rules is, "you don't trace other people's work". Plenty of other gallery sites have _copied_ this rule, but as far as I'm aware, it originates with DeviantArt. What's wrong with that? Tracing is just copying, right...? WRONG. First of all, _many_ artists, if not most, start out by tracing. I know I did. Second of all, _when_ you start out by tracing, you aren't JUST tracing. You aren't making an exact copy. You're mostly duplicating pose and proportion, because you haven't yet developed the artistic eye to actually get those right on your own, but you aren't duplicating the characters you're tracing from, you're drawing your own. Back when I was a wee lad (ha!) I'd trace the girls in various Archie _Sonic_ comics. I don't think I've EVER drawn an actual _Sonic_ character, though -- but I've drawn plenty of vixens and cats and such (mostly vixens, I like foxes a lot) over top poses of Sally and Bunny and Tikal and whatnot. According to DeviantArt, that's plagiarism, and DeviantArt could not be more wrong. But, then, look at their "Eclipse" UI and how THAT'S gone, and you kind of start to understand that maybe they're just staffed by people who have the IQ of used dishwater. Certainly that's my diagnosis, at this point. Oh, and a sprocket isn't a gear. Right now, I don't care. I've said my piece, I'm done. Have a not-cr*p day, OK?

After I got a ref sheet done for my fursona, I found another fursona that makes it look like I stole their design and changed a few aspects to make it not an exact copy. He technically had his done first but I didn't know about it until after mine was done.

Okay My Sona is basically glitch trap, because like a huge five nights at Freddy’s fan. Too much of a kitchen sink sona can be just as generic as the most basic, but having clear, curated details and a theme will make them more unique. Don’t skimp on a bio and backstory.

Hello, I'm in quite a few closed species, have my own closed species and overall, just love closed species, most creators don't care. Most creators really couldn't care less if you make a similar character. It's mainly smaller creators, that are or have a child fanbase, that will go after you.
