Inspector Wexford - The Speaker of Mandarin
Ойын-сауық
From the VHS cover:
To his utter astonishment, Chief Inspector Reg Wexford experiences some bizarre psychic sensations - like a vision of the corpse of the Marquise of Lai, dead for 2,000 years: while on an official visit to China. His sight-seeing party is made up of disparate strangers yet he feels a strange tension and claustrophobic atmosphere in their midst.
On his return to England, Wexford is called to the scene of a murder - that of a woman who was, by strange coincidence, on the Chinese sight-seeing trip....

Paul Goddard I cannot thank you enough for making these episodes available. Fantastic! I have been making my way through from season 1. For the life of me I cannot understand why they are not in syndication like some other classics of British TV.

I’m another very pleased viewer of inspector Wexford :The speaker of Mandarin episode ( from Australia) The scenes filmed in Beijing were so reflective of my time in that city in 1985 and 1987 the way the story unfolded gave it an accuracy and in H K and England as well . But that aside the way the characters are so subtly developed with believable skills, egos ,loyalties, weaknesses or lost hopes is always engaging with a Wexford story. What I particularly appreciate is unlike most U S detective shows a Wexford storyline is built very quietly and there’s also a welcome shortage of car smashes , buildings on fire or shoot outs

Very few people from democracies discover the difference in mentality between communist China and themselves although they are sure they know.
This episode is one of my favorites. Love the Wexford mysteries! Thanks for posting all of these wonderful episodes!
Third or fourth time watching. I think this is probably the best Wexford story line and best produced episode. Every time I watch one from this series, I see something that I hadn't seen previously. Great show.
Coming to the end of the list and getting sadder about that by the minute. This is an excellent mystery series.
Joe from Philadelphia just checking in Paul to say Thank you for uploading this episode of Wexford, I do enjoy this...Wexford has become one of my favorite TV programs of all time.
Thank you again so very much @Paul Goddard! This is one of my favourite episodes. China must have great fascination for many people. I love Reg's guide, Mr Sung! He gets so cross if Reg doesn't do what he, Sung, wants him to do. I admire Reg, because he always shows interest and respect for the local culture whenever he is abroad. Here he is speaking a little Chinese, and he always wants to try out local delicacies as well.

The actor playing Mr Sung is actually from Singapore and was working in the UK. The inspector speaks better Chinese than he does!

Paul Goddard, thank you for these wonderful shows. I'm American with English roots, father's side, so many of the details ring true with me --the poetry, names of cities, English tunes and choir singing. Alice, Anglophile from Livonia, Michigan.
Thank you for putting the Ruth Rendall series on. I do love a good mystery! And Inspector Wexford is one of my favorites!
Thankyou so much Paul for letting us all see Wexford 🥰🥰🥰

I drink a dozen mugs of coffee each day and have hallucinations in the night that I'm getting up for a pee every 90 minutes.
I traveled in China about the time this was filmed. Lots of good memories And yes, there were steam trains, believe it or not.
Many thanks Paul, you’re a 🌟 That’s my evening sorted. Hope you are keeping safe and well 🌻

Hi Kathleen how time flies. I hope you enjoyed this one when you watch it. 🙂
I love the subtle comedy. If your not paying attention, you'll miss it.
I managed to place the pregnant daughter after some thought. She's Jane Fairfax, the beauty who Frank Churchill was secretly engaged to all along. I'm glad I straightened that out. It's like detective work.
Thank you for uploading this episode. Highly entertaining. I didn't figure it out.
thanks. Am working my way through all of the episodes. Thanks to you, Paul, they all come in the same quality!
When actors could act and programs were entertaining. 💥
Thank you for this upload. Keep them coming. Greatly appreciated. Blessings.

I too am a great fan of Reg Wexford, and it would be lovely to be married to him (although sometimes a little difficult if he gets really carried away about a certain case, which happens quite frequently).
Thank you Paul, of all the Wexfords, this is the one I think about most.
Thank you, Paul
Well, I never saw that...... Excellent drama. Thanks again for your hard work Paul 🙏
I was going to give up watching this one, it was nearly 30 minutes in China, but Wexford and his Chinese tour guide became very entertaining and I got hooked. It also made me laugh about drinking too much green tea, I'll stick to Yorkshire Gold Blend thank you.
Thank you for posting this episode .
Thank you Paul. Much appreciated.

I've been enjoying these so much, thank you for uploading
Big thank you for uploading these. Sooo good
I was in China around the same time, for 6 weeks as well, ending in HK for some R&R. I'm sure we visited every factory in the country. We were on a couple of flights on retired Soviet aircraft - no air conditioning, or seat belts, or seat backs. Loved the show. Funny how the murderer is always the most obnoxious offspring. Must admit I saw that one coming. Think I've seen all the episodes twice now. Wish there were more. I have a real crush on Reg, though I would never even try to take him away from Dora ;-)))
Thank you Paul another great Wexford.I can’t wait to see another one i love the English police 👮 stories.cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
I love the dashes of humour in these - e.g. at about 1 hr 10 min, the daughter says something like, there's a horrendous lot of murder but not to worry, they are nearly all confined to the lower classes.

Did anyone else spend the second half of this wondering what happened to Tolstoy the cat?
@MissJessyeNorman
3 жыл бұрын
It was an unhappy home. Cats will seek out green pastures. No doubt, Tolstoy had already been eyeing up and befriending his new humans. Being holed up, to endure the traumatic murder, and the entire, dark, cruel, eerie night in that home with the cold, pallid corpse of his very lately murdered mistress, _utterly alone_ was the "last straw", evidenced by his very next move! As we witnessed, he bolted the moment escape, nay freedom, was made possible by the housekeeper. I suspect darling Tolstoy determined that _that_ very day would be moving day. Ergo, he promptly ensconced himself ever so languorously into his comfortable, loving, laughter-filled, ailurophilic new home, _long_ before nightfall. 😉😼🐈🐾

I Agree with my need to dissociate from the mind-sucking fear of this world. I enjoy a relaxing, though mysterious stories and actors who act like regular people, who make the screen come alive.
Thank you
Wow - thanks so much for this. Clever tie-in with Wexford's ability to speak some Mandarin and the code word, "Mandarin".

I went to South East Asia and China with a class in '96 - not my first choice but a truly great opportunity. Still all 3 girls were supposed to share a room in China and instead we were separated the one night we were there. I have always felt like my luggage was rifled through. Mostly because the bag was opened.
