Inspector Clouseau • Character Chronicles

Ойын-сауық

A guide to Inspector Jacques Clouseau, who somehow always manages to solve his cases in a blur of accidents and mispronunciations. The luckiest AND unluckiest detective in France was created by Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers.

One thing I love about Clouseau was that he was aware of his own incompetence and luck, making many of the situations that he got into all the more hilarious given how in a lot of them there was always a split second of 'OH SH-!' before the situation would go back and smack him in the face. One of my favorite moments isn't with this doesn't even involve him at the scene of a crime but him talking to Dreyfus at the mental ward. Through it all, Dreyfus is clearly just on the edges to of strangling him and you can see it Clouseaus' face even though Dreyfus is lying that he's happy and everything is okay. Clouseau just stands in awe, looking like scared out of his life and ready to just gun it out of there...and then the arrow comes in hits Dreyfus in the forehead with Clouseau looking like he knows shit just dropped. THEN HE RUNS. In a way he was and was not stupid. His arrogance, ego, and want to always be right always blew up in his face but he had enough sense in his head to KNOW he fucked up but would circle back around to arrogance in order to not let anyone else know he fucked up. XD

Peter found comedy and acting on his path in life, and it's probably very fortunate that he did. Talented comedians like him, who are also troubled or have mania or some other mental problem(s) might have ended up in a mental home instead of a movie studio or working on a comedy radio series. Jonathan Winters is probably another person in this situation, and maybe also Robin Williams. There is so much going on in the brain, and so many personalities in there, that theater or film or TV becomes a good venue with which to channel all that stuff. Just a theory. The Inspector Clouseau movies with Sellers (the ones filmed with him when he was alive) are gems, like the Pink Panther itself. They are delicious examples of a fine blend of slapstick and costumes and word play and parody. A joy to watch, over and over again. Thanks for this video.

Sad fact: Rene Gościnny [yes, the one of Asterix fame] did in fact sue the producers of "The Pink Panther". The story goes Gościnny, who became a film prodcuer at the time was developing a detective comedy movie of his own and sent a script to Peter Seller ofering him a role. He got zero respons and year later "Pink Panther strikes agian" came out and as Gościnny clamed it was heavely plagriarise from his script. Gościnny filed a lawsuit however he sadly died of heart attack. The trail was droped however years later Gościnny's brother said years later that their family came to agrement with Pink Panther people.

A great retrospective on the iconic character. Makes me want to rewatch the films (well, the entries featuring Sellers at least) again as I haven't seen most of them in years. Wonder why they didn't go with casting Atkinson in the end for "Son of"? He was more well known by then.

Really enjoyed this video. I grew up on these movies and the Clouseau cartoons. No one, absolutely no one should play Clouseau (in live action form anyway) except for Sellers. I did find the first film a bit dull as a child. Sure, Clouseau was funny but with the focus being on Sir Charles, Clouseau was just a side character in that one. The later 70s films start off very funny, but I do feel they can go a bit over the top at certain points, particularly with Strikes Again My favourite PP film, like most folks, is 'A Shot in the Dark'. I love the character of Hercule, ( I somehow, find it funnier when Dreyfus is a commissioner rather than just a Chief Inspector) and I find the whole movie hilarious, start to end. It's well written and directed. It's a cinematic masterpiece, and the cast were perfect. The movie, 'The Life and Death of Peter Sellers' had obvious factual elements, but I hear a lot of people who knew Sellers, found the film was full of exaggerated BS, just like The Curse of Steptoe. People also believe Sellers may have had bipolar, explaining his sudden changes in personality

@@massimocappuccini7644 I guess that would be A Shot in the Dark, from 1964. Though it includes Inspector Clouseau with some of his later mannerisms, and several of the characters associated with him in later movies, the one thing it doesn't seem to include is: a Pink Panther.

Peter Sellars was a comedy genius, the likes of which will probably never be seen again. When I try to explain to people what made him such a unique talent, I often refer to the scene where he plays a Swedish sailor, complete with an inflatable parrot on his shoulder. Think of it, he's an English actor, playing a character with a French accent and in that scene he has to portray a person with a French accent, imitating a Scandinavian accent! How do you even begin to figure out how to do that?? And yet he does it flawlessly. Also, he could easily do the over the top scenes but it was his ingenious subtlety that often funniest. Using the late Chris Farley as an example, although he was very talented, he was not a master of the subtle humor that Sellars was so good at. And as far as I'm concerned, the only Pink Panther films that matter are the ones with Sellars. The most recent reboot was just awful and frankly I'm surprised that Martin was stupid enough to go down that road at all. One last thought, the famous tooth pulling scene is in my opinion the funniest couple of minutes in any movie that I've ever seen in my life.

I am sorry to say this, but I had to stop halfway because the narration was driving me nuts. It is the vocal equivalent of non-joined up writing, sounding like he is speaking to a room full of three year old children or 99 year old geriatrics. There are just too many amateur narrators on KZread.
