Insight Into Depression - Sadhguru

In this discourse "Insight Into Depression", Sadhguru explains that in most cases of depression a person is simply generating intense thoughts and emotions that are working against them and that in many ways, 70% of all illnesses are self-created.

"No, No I am like this because my father abused me when I was 7 years of age. If you know all that bullshit, you can as well turn yourself around, isn't it?" - Sadhguru. Truth!

Being a Spiritual Guru...Sadguru should be highly careful about his words & narratives. Unless you have experienced any problems or pain, one should be careful about making any comment on it. Depression & anxiety are not favourite timepass of any one. It's a pain & needs remedy. As our body gets sick our spirit can also feel uneasy in long journey of life. And these things happen because we all are humans not God. Three months of depression/anxiety or anger can make a person insane. These words can worsen anxiety of any dedicated follower of you. Kindly think 100 times before making comments on any sensitive matter. Because you are not a common man. You are guide to many's life.

This is the worst mental health advice. One of the most common symptoms are a feeling of numbness and feeling catatonic. Not intense emotions. Is he actually saying depressed people are seeking attention and going insane?! Even if this is the case it is a cry for help NOT attention. Who chooses to live like this for negetive attention and pity?! I hope people going through clinical depression don't see this. It's gaslighting plain and simple. If you are depressed get real help from therapists or doctors or close family and friends who can support you not from a baba who is making unsubstantiated claims and remedies that are harmful. It's not an individual endeavour. A community response is extremely important.

I recently in the last few weeks found Sadhguru and his knowledge is transforming my life because he speaks to the issues I have asked myself since childhood. I listen carefully with a certain degree of skepticism because I don’t seek a leader, pastor or guide. I seek knowledge and he offers that with no conditions.

He is just saying be careful with your anger and emotions that you may get stuck. also he is saying it DOES at some level come down to choice. That is the good news. He also says there are a few that this isnt the case. It is a warning of sorts and also good news that we have some control.

First realize that the solution lies within you, then look for it. Actively search for ways to improve your condition, mentally, energetically and physically. Over time things will get better for you.

we need to be cautions on distinguishing assigning our understandig of responsability to people from describing reality. telling depressed people that it is their fault to be depressed is not objective reality but its rather trying to put preasure on them hoping that preasure would incentivise the opposit behaviour and therefore reduce depression. unfortunately people dont always respond well to just more preasure. people even get depressed from too much social pressure. if such people get told that its "just their fault" they might lose even more confidence, give up entirely or get depressed or frustrated about people not taking them seriously. this is why i think sadhguru spreading his wisdom is in this case DANGEROUS and HARMFUL.

As someone who has suffered from mental illness since I am 15, I can safely say that one cannot “act depressed.” This is very dangerous when a “guru” can allow himself to give such uninformed and unscientific views on mental illness. Mental illness is not an excuse “not to go to work.”

Not really sure about this. I'm sure you can try to make the best of a bad situation, but for a lot of people they try really hard and cannot overcome depression. It's not true that you can just 'think yourself better' - not for clinical depression at least. If that was the case, no one would be depressed. And I think this lays too much blame on the individual and not enough on social and individual circumstances. Perhaps people in society just genuinely ought to be nicer, and then less people would be depressed? Also, I think you get this the wrong way around. People want attention BECAUSE they're depressed. They don't become depressed for attention. Usually I love your videos but as someone who has and still does suffer from depression, and has also lived and worked with fellow sufferers, it is easier for those on the outside to imagine it is entirely self-created. There may of course be some element of wallowing, but there are many more attempts to deal with depression in a healthy way that many may desperately try, and to no avail. It is the same for physical ailments. If you do not take time off to rest and recover, you will likely become more ill. I have witnessed this in myself and many others. The drive to 'push through' is actually often very toxic and creates more problems than it solves. Obviously, you know yourself best, and if you feel unwell, then you are unwell. I do not believe many at all would rather sit at home for the sake of a snowflake than go to work. And if they do, then there is clearly some mental health issue at play here. This is not nothing. It cannot be dismissed as nothing.

Yeah, true. This is why I don’t ask help because it’s just asking for attention. I hide it and suffocate under the depths of the abyss while everyone thinks I am fine. Well said, Sadhguru. My thoughts always reminds me of that, and I completely agree that I should hide it til the day I die.

I like Sadhguru but I don't agree with this video. Depression seems to be a choice. It's not a choice. Maybe it's something inside your mind create by your self but there isn't a switch to turn off. It isn''t so easy.

Hmm, life doesn't scare me anymore. it's pointless to continue even if you have everything you need. I feel lame being conscious and having obligations. To acquire anything, whether material or non-material, you have to take action. I think it's better not to be aware of existence due to the multitude of responsibilities and tasks that need to be done. I wish I was dead 😴even if what Sadhguru says is true I need to do something, yoga practices to fix it cause my stupid mind is wrong 😪
