Insider Perspective on Armenia's Military Transformation

In this episode, host Patrick Elliott interviews Regional Studies Center director Richard Giragossian. They discuss Giragossian's analysis of ongoing military reforms in Armenia and structural weaknesses plaguing Azerbaijan that could undermine future military aggression. Insight is also provided into the dynamics shaping the strategic military environment and what it means for regional stability.

Again, the moderator fails to push Giragossian as to his "insider" status on Armenia's military. Does Giragossian have contacts inside the miltary to support his claims about alleged reforms? It's all anecdotal otherwise. This is one of the structural drawbacks of CivilNet and the rest of the amateurish media in Armenia, let alone the diaspora. Commentary is fine, but it must be fact-based. Hacopian rants and raves are a prime example.

Contrary to the title of this "discussion", the guest and the moderator had little of anything to say about what reforms are allegedly taking place in Armenia's military. Actually, no one, let alone these two diasporan Armenians, know what if anything is being done to rebuild Armenia's armed forces after the devastating 2020 war defeat. Now, as in the past, the military is a "taboo" subject for public discussion. Not even the Armenian media dares to investigate what is going on. Talk about a lack of minimal transparency. Giragossian can talk about Azerbaijan's weakened military all he wants, and he does so without providing any credible sources, but the fact remains Baku still holds the military trump card vis-a-vis Armenia. There is little substantive debate in Armenia regarding the 2020 defeat. No one seems willing or ready to broach the matter. The parliament's inquiry commission seems content to hold closed door meetings on the matter, focusing on the tactical blunders of low-mid level officers. Meanwhile, the families of the thousands of dead and injured soldiers can only ask if their sacrifice was in vain.

Yes, the 2020 loss must be discussed. I completely agree with you, but Giragossian goes into a lot of detail, and I doubt that he pulled all this out of the air. This is an individual who runs a think tank, he’s not about to reveal his sources.

Any commentator worth his/her salt would tangentially note sources to support their claims. A detailed perusal of Armenia's press shows nothing, except for generalizations, when covering these "reforms". Giragossian runs a one-man think tank. It was the job of the moderator to press for sources. Otherwise, it's all anecodotal. Again, anything related to the militay, has been a taboo subject for public discussion. Little has changed in this regard. Libaridian's "White Paper" on the 2020 defeat was given short-shrift in Armenia. @@TenTenJ

peace peace and peace Armenians cannot win by fighting against the Turks. Building a bridge of peace and friendship will prevent the Armenian people from wasting their money on useless military equipment. When Armenians support peace instead of war, Armenian mothers will not go to the cemeteries to cry over their children. In the Caucasus, Georgians, Turks, Azeris and Armenians have to be friends, we are fighting, Russians and Europeans are winning. Armenian mothers should go to visit their children's workplaces, not cemeteries. I feel sorry for them. Raising a child is very difficult

Armenians are missing this point. The Turkish army has been training Azerbaijani officers in military schools for 30 years. He shared the Turkish army's internal security operations, the military experience it gained in Syria, Iraq and Libya, its investment in the war industry and Turkish drone technology with the Azeri army. The issue is not just aid; the Turkish army supports and will support its brother, the Azeri army, with all its might. Armenians cannot evaluate the events without understanding this. It doesn't change whichever party comes to Turkey.
