Inside Unbound 2023 | Thick Mud Fest!

Спорт

For the Elite Men and Women of the Unbound 200, this race was a race of attrition through thick peanut butter mud as well as rain, strong winds. It's considered an honor to finish and in order to win, Unbound brings the best cyclists in the world. We see action from Keegan Swenson, Lachlan Morton, Peter Stetina, Peter Vakoc, Sofia Gomez Villafane, Carolin Schiff, Sarah Sturm, Rebecca Fahringer, Sarah Max, Ella Bloor and more. Two big factors were the mud where most people walked for miles and the finish area where the 100 finishers were mixed in with the 200 lead group. Did it have a factor in the outcome of the finish? Let us know in the comments!

Veloworthy, once again, providing the best coverage. It's a luxury to see the race from the inside. No montages, no silly edits, no music, just this close and intimate view of the racers. This is what this is all about. People. This point of view is the best for this discipline. Solid work!

Absolutely amazing race this year. Great coverage! I too agree this race is special. Gravel traditionally has been precisely for its lack of rules and priority on fun and democratizing bike racing. So it is arguably special for the very aspects Sofia seems to be wishing she could change. Sure everyone wants a win and I can understand her disappointment. But there are a LOT of races she can participate in meeting these criteria - where men and women never compete in the same field. Conversely there are not many races like Unbound. So yeah, this race IS special. It has special tactics because it requires its winners to be resilient face of extreme adversity and take into account many factors not common in other races, like men dropping out of the lead group meeting up with the pro women's leaders. Unfortunately Lifetime has already made some unfortunate new rules. In so doing they may have started down the dark, slippery path to UCI-ism. Some of it isn't so bad (yet.) They're separating the pros from the amateurs and pro women from pro men by a few minutes. (Appealing directly to Sofia's argument while not completely eliminating the open field.) They're also making rules against certain equipment choices. I'm not personally affected (for now) but I still think that's a shame. Gravel is growing and that's a good thing but I have a wish for it to always stick to its strong roots; outside mainstream cycling; open to all and true to an open format.

I thought UB was self supported - does having others wash your bike n chain still count as self supported?

There are two pit stops at mile 79 and mile 167 where riders have support crews. Other than that they are on their own. There are also two water 💦 stops but the riders need to fill bottles themselves.

I think they should have the option to switch out bikes, like cyclocross. They already have a pit crew... Thanks for the coverage. 🇺🇸👍

That would be cool! Numbers with the timing chips have to stay on one bike the whole time though.

All of this teamwork, huge sponsorships etc. is impressive, but kinda kills the spirit of gravel racing... Who would win without their own bike mechanics on checkpoints, switched and swapped this and that, on self sufficient ride?

@25:04 i feel sorry for him, it sucks to have tourists in the way of an elite sprint finish. what a shit show, but organizers want to preserve their cash cow (aka tourists paying $$$ to show up and 'race' 25-50mi) so that finish is what you get. the tourist events should be held on an entirely different day.

How so? I think she is making excellent points and one day if not within the next couple of years you will see it that way. It only makes sense. This format is fine as a festival but as it gets more serious, changes are in order.

Gravel was touted as being for everyone and NOT like road racing which it’s becoming. Once you get divisions, Pros and money it gets ruined.

@@teweraijanda2994Maybe the women need a separate race, but last year Sophia said she liked racing the men but now she got smoked her tune changed. She’s in the same race as everyone else, she has the same opportunities as every other woman but she’ll always have a tantrum when she gets beaten. She’s used to being a big fish in a small pond.
