Inside The World's Largest Data Center

Ғылым және технология

This millennium has seen the most advanced technological developments in human history, and the latest shift towards cloud-based technologies has changed the landscape and forced companies to develop. Now, more than ever, vast amounts of data are being processed; millions upon millions of pieces of information are being uploaded, downloaded and stored each second. Switch is a company whose aim it is to grow the Internet both intelligently and sustainably, and with the opening of its latest campus it demonstrates it really does mean what it says.
Globally, the average data centre has occupied a space of around 100,000 sq ft, but with a surge in demand for online tools, particularly over this past year, 100,000 sq ft units are now considered to be small. Switch’s latest offering places a 1.3 million sq ft warehouse among many other large buildings in its 17.4 million sq ft campus, dubbed The Citadel, a name which hints at the tech giant’s focus on security and innovation. The park lies adjacent to Tesla’s Gigafactory, a company with which Switch has worked alongside in order to bring a new lease of life, albeit high-tech, to the desert.
The campus’ largest building, Tahoe Reno 1, gained the title of the world’s largest colocation centre, dethroning the 1.1 million sq ft Lakeside Technology. The site was expected to cost upwards of $1 billion, but after building everything from the ground up the cost quickly tripled.

I live out here in, Las Vegas, Nevada and when we were all watching the NEW Switch locations being built it was crazy. I drove up with my mother and did not think anything of it as know one knew who or what was the building being built for. The night me and my mother decided to go drive out there we were meet with a security guard and this guy had two UZI looking guns on both sides of his chest. I think that was the day we realized how important this location was. The location in, Las Vegas, Nevada is located off of Warm Springs. If you ever want to take a look.

Data center capacity (size) hasn't been measured in area occupied in years. Power consumption is the actual measure of "how large" a data center is. So data center size is measured in MW.

It’s insane that we are passed the point in wireless networking that spinning hard drives are no longer fast enough to keep up. We are honestly reaching the point where sata or sas based ssds won’t be fast enough to keep up. Only gen 3-5 nvme will be able to keep up with the ever increasing level of bandwidth people are expecting. I have a feeling 16-18tb hdds will be flooding the used market in the coming year or two. Well I guess that’s if the companies who actually use drives that large in raid arrays don’t destroy them for data security. It’s insane that 3 years ago a 1pb server took up massive amounts of space and they were usually pretty slow compared to other devices. Now you can stuff 1pb of sas ssds into a 2u rack and have insane speeds. Now you can stuff 64tb of 15gbps nvme storage into the size of a low profile gpu. I can’t wait to see what manufacturers have in store for us in the near future. I’m hoping for a crazy thundertooth or bluebolt 80gbps wireless connection. I’m hoping for special usb style connectors with full pcie gen 5 x8-x16 bandwidth for insane transfer speeds. I’m hoping for optane memory to be used as a storage tier in ever nvme device. I’m hoping for tri mode u.3 connectors to replace sata connectors on consumer boards allowing you into install any type of storage you want with a single cable, and manufacturers to sell hard drives or ssds with built in nvme or m.2 slots to add your own nvme cache or tier to any drive. But really I’m just hoping rtx 3000 and ryzen 5000 actually go on sale for less than 3x msrp.

Ssh can be a bit difficult, because of the implementation of asymmetric encryption which is specifically designed to prevent mitm attacks from capturing credentials so you might want to target things like ftp or smb, or even just skip the damn mitm attack and go for server side exploits but that may me hard to find in a security oriented subnetwork and you would probably get picked up by the NIDS... Datacenters usually shred the harddrives baisicly destroying all the hard work that went into the the thing. Since labor in developed world is costly servers would need to be made easily interchangeable parts from generation to generation. Cases can outlast tech inside for multiple generations :) They could New & more efficient servers 24/7 and older ones on only for peak load if they are not already doing so :)

Hyperloop is not a invention it‘s a money grave, use a maglev. The better efficiency would be to remove everything that isn’t maschine code on that servers and also they basically only take green energy from the grid which means it takes energy for other people. They could have just made solor panels on the roof completely but yeah..
