Inside the MOTU Ultralite Mk5 USB C Audio Interface - Take It Apart!
Музыка
This is just a quick teardown for the folks who wanted a hi-res look at what’s going on inside the MOTU Ultralite Mk5 usb audio interface. This is one of the best choices of interfaces right now for new apple m1 systems, but lots of folks are interested in it for use with Linux and Windows too. It’s a great portable option, and with DC coupled outputs, is attractive for sending control voltage from a computer as well. Check it out and let us know in the comments what you see that is interesting, or if you’ve got any insights or questions.
Thanks for watching

Nice video. What is the headphone output op-amp, and do you know the power supply voltage? I saw that the MOTU M4 uses the OPA1688 at +/- 5V but the Ultralite mk5 has more headphone power. It's possible they're using a higher power supply voltage with the same part.
Great video. Now I need to find teardowns and comparisons for Focusrite and Audient interfaces.

aux - sends through a real piece of iron can be done? The output of the channel for example 3.4 will go to the compressor (for example). And the output from the compressor to the input motu 5.6. What is it for? To write a compressor to the program with an online render track.

If you're asking... yes you can route an input to a physical output to send to a hardware processor, and then back into another input. You have a number of different mix buses to work with in CueMix to accomplish it. There are all sorts of different reasons why you might want to do it, but yes, ultimately you would be looking to capture the processed signal for recording or broadcast. Let me know if I've misunderstood the question though!
These BurrBrown preamps have a max 65dB gain, yet the ultralite is rated for a 75dB gain. I guess they split the gain with an extra analog stage using those OPA167 pairs (as LME49724s look more like balanced line recievers). Can someone give a bit more insight on that?
Thanks for this teardown and kudos for posting convenient data sheet links on your website. I own one of these units and was curious about its design, but could find no publicly available schematics. Another user has found that the natural bias point of the balanced inputs is about 1.45V and this is messing with metering on his downstream Soundcraft mixer. (It's really his mixer's fault for DC coupling the meter circuitry.) After seeing your teardown, I understand that this is where the output common mode voltage of the LME49724 differential input amps is set -- probably because that's what the ESS A/D converter chip wants to see. I'm not blaming MOTU for this, since 1.5V through 20k is easily overridden by the average audio output stage, but Soundcraft AC-coupled their outputs and wired their meter circuit downstream of the block caps! Who'da thunk it?

I do still recommend these for sure. I've had some isolated issues with my m1 Mac mini lately... occasionally a recorded track will just be destroyed sounding with a strange echo. I thought it was the MOTU at first, but have since talked to and seen video evidence of the exact same fault happening with an m1 Mac and a Focusrite interface. This only popped up after the latest OS update, after a year of flawless use for me. So, all of that to say, I am very much still happy with this interface for what it does.

Power supply!!! You gotta figure out the power supply. Most USB audio interfaces are only 5V devices which can be limiting. I’d love to see what they do on these. Those new ESS converters are very very good. Surprised they’re using the Burr Brown preamp actually. Let me know if you want to get in deep! I don’t know everything but I do this kind of electronics for fun.

The MOTU mk system is a bit strange, as they sell some of the models along side of each other instead of the next version replacing the previous outright. Thankfully, they all look different enough to recognize easily & it is marked on the front panel of all of their gear. Thanks for watching Rob!

They made the switch from AKM chipsets to ESS chipsets in 2022. Apparently due to availability issues after AKM factory fire and the capacitor changes have to do with them using 2x ESS 4ch chips vs 1xAKM 8ch chip.
