Inside the communities fighting against renewable energy | Four Corners
Wind power is essential for Australia to meet its green energy targets - but we’re not even halfway there and the issue is becoming increasingly politicised.
A new climate battle is now raging, pitting nature conservation against wind farm construction. It’s fracturing communities and leading to old enemies forming new alliances against renewables. Misinformation about wind power is flourishing, and complex regulation is holding Australia back on its cheapest and quickest path to net zero.
Four Corners reporter Angus Grigg travels to Nundle, a small community in New South Wales where an ambitious proposal to build a wind farm is dividing residents.
In coal country he meets a climate change sceptic and environmentalist who are teaming up, and he investigates the next frontier for clean energy - giant wind turbines in the seas off Australia’s coastline.

When someone standing on their land which has been 90% cleared of vegetation saying preserve our natural habitat it’s a bit hypocritical.

Well said
Perhaps I'm old and cynical - all both sides are concerned about is 'what's in it for me'. Australia's future? That's our young people. Oh that's right... we priced them out of the conversation.
I don't think i spotted a single person under 40 in the whole program.
Cuts to shots of 'coal country'. "Ob yeh, that looks much better then some wind turbines"
Denial, Doubt, Delay. Same tactics, same player's, different game.😔😤🙄🤦🏾
Bloody Nimbys, "yeh, you'll definitely be able to see them on that hill over there." Yeh alright mate, so whats your point? ..
but they will still be demanding a 24hr 365 electricity supply for all amenities.
Why not put them on the Gold Coast right off the beach you get a lot of wind coming off the ocean
If an area has an issue building wind turbines the area has an issue building anything. Be it renewable energy or non renewable energy infrastructure.
We want renewable but not in my back yard
Everyone wants cheaper and readily available energy but no one wants the solution on their doorstep. This is not a difficult problem.
check out 10:00.... What does wind farms have to do with soil quality???
Cheap energy???? a million/year rent for that land holder.
There is a lot of change happening, and it's happening in places that haven't changed in these peoples lifetime. So I can feel for them. To be ignorant of the facts is something I have a lot more trouble with but can understand to some degree given the education levels that different people can access. But to seed misinformation and disinformation is despicable.
Greed trumps all.
I always thought developed countries are more mature and sensible. I guess humans are all the same everywhere.
what about painting the wind turbine in GREEN , that looks like tree ...
1 million a year rental , sweet
Would have liked to see more investigation and airtime of First Nations voices and younger peoples opinions in this report. Truly terrifying behaviour from individualistic people whose concerns are rooted in their own inconvenience. The irony is that the beautiful landscapes and unique wildlife a lot of these people weaponise will be gone if we don’t act now.
Put em off bondi and manly
"but muh view"
For me I have no problems with wind turbines etc. Just the problem is all this moved away from just pure science which it should be but became way too politicized. It's not good.
There's plenty of farmland, why do we have to destroy native forests? Place wind turbines on degraded exotic pasture, grazed by sheep cattle etc.
@scottd8108

Pasture is generally flat - the wind is higher on the hills.

The wind has to blow fairly strong and consistently to be chosen as a viable site..

Still have to get the power to a grid. If too far, the losses exceed the generation. Nota bad thought though.
Prime example of horseshoe theory at work here. Also, where are the young people and indigenous groups? Those are the ones that will be most impacted by chnaging climate. All you're doing is just speaking to a bunch of nimbys.
I lived on a property on the edge of world heritage forest in the wet tropics... It's a magical place. We need renewables AND we also need good planning. I'm sure the two can go hand in hand.
not in my backyard mentality
It's still amazes me. The audacity that some people have. They're "upset" about something that can benefit many. To save my view. By the way, it's all "stolen" land. But let's not speak on that issue.
All about the money
It isn’t free
I cannot see how it can negatively effect people's bussiness
Can we get our money back if it doesn't work?
I am with Steve ..
We ARE on this whole train to nowhere with no idea!
Every turbine gets a government subsidy. I wonder how long that will last? If wind turbines are to ever succeed they need to be self sufficient from a financial perspective.
1 million for 30 years hahaha wtf
Oh. So they get $1million a year. I understand now.
Hope you survive your new planet!
Great Doc ABC. Thanx. 👍
I am yet to be convinced that your energy solutions - especially wind are sustainable and efficient.

What's your solution?
I’m under 40 and not a nimby at all but to meet the target are we going to have hundreds of thousands of these things all over Australia? If so, I don’t want that either
It’s the sun
It amazes me how prevalent climate change denial and misinformation are! Just when I was starting to feel hopeful there's some momentum for positive change... Still a lot of hard conversations and fact communication needed to avert this looming disaster. Thanks for the insight.
@pete5044

Looming disaster? Please elaborate
It’s not just about the “sight” of these turbines. Unless you’ve heard the noise they make, it’s extremely hard to have an informed opinion.
Is it a video on wind farms or is it a soap opera😂
Greed!
Also designed to seperate the people also from what I see also!
Put them in the ocean. It’s pretty bloody windy out there. And there’s no Neighbours
and the recycling process for replacing old mills? and does that process use harmful chemicals?
Thank you abc for a great show. Build turbines in metropolitan areas please it would make everything better.
@daviddavidson1417

Not a lot of wind in the metropolitan areas usually.
Oh my NIMBYs
They're a great idea, as long as they aren't anywhere near me 😅
Great report as always 4 corners love your work and all of your reporters at it
They want to build one in our Geographe bay, pristine ocean whales reefs.They got no chance
@linmal2242

Wont worry the whales; they will swim around them ! Just another 'rock' on the sea floor !
Selfishness getting in the way of selfishness.
Instead of destroying the environment how about we consider nuclear power?

Yeah that's definitely not going to be a controversial one!

one word, nuclear.
There is nothing renewable about renewables

I'm sorry, what?
Turbine supporters are crazy, they're willingly ignoring the real cost/output of a turbine over it's life, build nuclear and call it a day.
NUCLEAR energy
It is hard not to believe that a million dollars a year isn't the objective. Do it for nothing mate, then you can take the moral high ground. !! Just think.... in the eyes of climate religions and even perhaps in the eyes of God, you'll be far wealthier.
BS
Wind kills every thing
We are going to regret renewables
@zimtuff

Why will we regret renewables??
"We don't want to lose our views" how about the future of our young.
People, go geothermal and put solar on every roof.
Congratulations to the community that fights agasinst it!! No reason to propose that current generastions should give up ts current and traditonal life style on behalf of climate histeria and the so called futre geerations.
It's all about greed. Say no to wind farms.
