Inside the abandoned platforms at Charing Cross station | City Secrets | Time Out

The jubilee line platform at Charing Cross discontinued in 1999, and is now used as a film location for the Bourne Identity, and most famously the James Bond movie Skyfall. Time Out got a guided tour of this mysterious part of the London Underground.

    I believe that the jubilee platforms are used to turn and stable trains off peak so they can be slotted back in later. If your train's destination is Green Park it will run on empty to Charing Cross and wait there to re enter service. If the station was to re open to passengers I believe the 3 escalators would need to be replaced, at considerable cost.

    It’s a shame that it couldn’t be used as a branch of the jubilee line and extend it towards Blackfriars as the over run tunnels I think almost reach there and have an interchange at Aldwych rebuild that station and have the pic run there again ,dirty fantasy time but it’s such a waste of infrastructure when we are told to leave cars

    You are correct in regard to the over run tunnels to Aldwych. I would suggest that as the Aldwych tunnels extend to the Temple (check that, it is true) there could be a pedestrian connection made from this line to there; a useful interconnection to the District. Not sure if Blackfriars is the best onward destination, I would suggest to Bank to connect to the DLR. Rather than a Jubilee branch this would be a new West End terminus for the DLR at CX. However, Aldwych branch of the Piccadilly could be exploited for an alternative route for surface traffic from Northern Line branch Kentish Town passing the Camden Town junctions down Eversholt Street to Euston, then southwards through to Southampton Way to take up at Holborn the disused Piccadilly branch down Kingsway to Aldwych. Then cross the river to Waterloo Road and towards Elephant to connect with the Bakerloo Extension to Lewisham. My fantasy line would be to bring the Marylebone services into a tunnel under there then down Seymour Place to Marble Arch, then under Park Lane to Hyde Park Corner then to Green Park with a new flying junction and platforms to take the abandoned section of the Jubilee to CX. From there to Aldwych and onwards to Bank etc.

    Q. Both Charing X jubilee line and aldwych on the Piccadilly line wore terminals. Did the lines meet up between both stations as sidings?

  • @MikeWillSee

    @MikeWillSee

    No, too far apart and on completely separate lines

  • @tomthornton6259

    @tomthornton6259

    No both were totally separate, but they could've been linked. The Jubilee line was always meant to go from North West to east London, but was originally going to continue under The City, including new platforms at Aldwych and interchanging with the piccadilly. But since the first phase of the Jubilee opened in 1979, significant new developments happened in the docklands, namely Canary Wharf. So the line bypassed Charing Cross via Westminster to follow its current route, meaning the 2 stations were never connected; helping to close Aldwych in 94, and leading to the redundancy of the Charing Cross platforms. I think I've heard somehwere that the old Jubilee tunnels go beyond Charing X and stop very close to Aldwych, but that might not be true. Either way, there is no physical connection

    Why is the part no longer in use? Did they relocate the line during an extension?

  • @richard4cz

    @richard4cz

    6 ай бұрын

    Yeah. The 1999 extension took the line through South London to growing Canary Wharf and Stratford. Charing Cross was abandoned as the station had been built with a different direction of the future extension envisioned. That's why the overrun tunnels go most of the way towards Aldwych. It would have been very impractical (maybe even impossible) to build a curve from the station towards Waterloo. The extension aimed to provide a better service to poorly connected areas, not just the redevelopment of the Docklands (where the Jubilee was expected to go next before London opted for a much cheaper DLP)

    Because the line was extended in a different direction to what was originally planned. Originally was intended to go to Fenchurch street via Strand along the course of the river fleet (hence being called the fleet line during building). It instead went to Canary Wharf via the south bank and westminster
