The "Lift Fan" is Not an additional engine. It is a Fan, shaft driven off the front of the Engine. It gets 29,000 SHP at the bevel gear drive for the Blisk.

*_Former Boeing.... been up close and personal with our F-15's and F/A-18's..._* I was part of Boeing Commercial Lean Manufacturing. We went from plant to plant and helped implement Lean. Part of that is reducing 'mistakes'. We would revamp processes to eliminate production errors. We could build a 747 in 1 week; hundreds of seats, windows, 4 engines, bathrooms, etc. It was taking over 1 year to make a F/A-18. It had 1 window, 2 tiny engines, and 1 seat. Much of that 1 year was 'fixing' mistakes made earlier on production lines. Ever have to remove thousands of rivets to pull a jet fighter apart to fix a stupid mistake made months earlier. It happened and we had to 'fix it'. *_Many of those processes we implemented years ago are still being used today..._*

Which variant of the F-35 are you referring to? A, B, or C? None of the 3 variants are equal in operating parameters. The F-35B is the BIGGEST, the SLOWEST, the LEAST STEALTHY, the LOWEST WEAPONS LOAD, so it cannot compare to either of the other two. The stated intention of the 3 variant F-35 was to produce a fighter class that SHARED 80% of commonalty, the current %age for the 3 variants is just over 20%, so the entire programme is a failure, and the costs will only be recovered by over-pricing the sales to allied nations.
