Inside Scarecrow Video: The Largest Independent Video Store in the World

A revealing look inside Scarecrow Video, the largest independent video store in the world. Filmed using a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera and a Black Magic Cinema Camera, along with a Polaroid camcorder handheld rig and a Manfrotto 561 Video Monopod. Audio captured using a Sennheiser wireless microphone plugged into a Zoom H4n.

"You can stay home and watch what they've got or you can come here and watch what you want". That is my philosophy and why I'm so dead set against committing only to streaming. For one thing an internet feed can break down from time to time or the movie will buffer during the most inconvenient times. They also decide what you watch. My brother doesn't like that I have over 1100 Blu-Rays in my apartment and tried to sell me on Netflix but I told him that I can't watch anything on Netflix without the video buffering then the audio is out of sync with the video. I also like the way my collection looks. I like the spines facing outward and knowing that if I want to watch something it's right there. My nurse who comes to change my bandages on my legs tried to warn me of hard media being on the way out. Maybe it'll happen with Warner, Fox, Paramount, et al but it'll never happen with Arrow, Scream Factory, Kino, Vinegar Syndrome, Blue Underground, Synapse, 88 Films and all the indie companies

I'm a seattle native, scarecrow used to be a tiny place before they got the bigger store. The owner had a photographic memory and would always have great recommendations. He loved Alfred Hitchcock, so as like a 9 of 10 year old those were the movies I was watching. Scarecrow is like a not to barely hidden gem of Seattle. I hope they open up to business like it was before the pandemic. It's an experience just to look at all of the crazy movies on the shelves. I wonder if Quentin Tarantino has ever been there. He would love it.

As a graduate of the Art Institute of Seattle, with a degree in Music and Video Production/Business, Scarecrow is "second home" to me! Been a customer since 2000. Yes, in my opinion, Blockbuster and Hollywood Video (and yes, even Video Update) WERE impressive, BUT, all three "pale in comparison" to Scarecrow! TO THIS DAY, I'm FLOORED by their selection/inventory! In my opinion, for those that STILL have a VCR (OR a DVD and VCR combo), one thing that DOES give Scarecrow an "edge" is that fact that they STILL have titles on VHS. As a fan of "rare/obscure/out-of-print or "deleted" titles, THIS works in my favor!

The thing is Redbox and all these other internet movies is not the same as going to a video store. Redbox is extremely limited and looking for movies on the internet is wide but you would really need to look at certain types. Video stores provide upfront movies where you can be introduced to many movies you've never knew about. The future is going to sh#t with thess damn new age humans depending so much on the net

I've been a DVD "Collector" since around 2004-05, since I'm out of N.J., and work(ed) in Gotham, I had a silly plethora of Video shoppes to hunt at. Since 2006, with the demise of the incredible Tower Records, I've witnessed vid shoppes steadily yet surely closing up shop. Virgin Megastores, and lastly J&R Music World of all places. My main DVD hooks were the Mom and Pops, Brick and Mortar stores were I've found the rarest Disc stock, I'm talking scarce and worth silly coins! Last time I tried to rubber the road looking for the good stuff in my last trip to the City, all, and I do mean ALL those little Video stores were shuttered, ......... this time for good. To me it's quite telling just how much permanent damage the computer has done. Yet you have collectors complaining that their means to locate the physical movie goods ain't there anymore, yet they still entertain the computer for they DVD fix. Don't make any sense at all folks!
