I would agree that the Captain of such a vessel has an enormous responsibility on his shoulders, but he also has the support of dozens of Officers and Seamen. Judges (in the UK at least) have a workload that would surprise you, they don't just sit in judgement of criminal trials. Politicians are just cunts.

I stood on the Golden Gate Bridge as she passed under. The deck was close enough to the bridge that you could jump off the bridge and safely land on the queen. Not very many pedestrian bridges in the world that allow such a close view while stamding directly over such a large ship.

There is a pilot boat in each port which comes alongside the ship when he is finished, it will also deliver him to the ship when it is arriving into a port. He will call the boat on the radio and then an Officer escorts him down to a hatch in the side where he climbs down a ladder to embark the boat to take him back to shore.

The first and last night is "elegant casual" (jackets but no ties required) since everyone's still busy packing or unpacking. There's one Semi-formal night where a dark suit is appropriate.

On night of the September 10th-11th 1995 the QM2 was slammed by a 95 foot high wave, followed by two smaller waves. The captain, Captain Warwick, reported winds to 130 miles per hour with average wave heights of 40 feet. The 95 foot wave hit as most passengers were asleep in their beds at 4:10am. The captain said, "At 04:10am the rogue wave was sighted right ahead, looming out of the darkness from 220°, it looked as though the ship was heading straight for the white cliffs of Dover. The wave seemed to take ages to arrive but it was probably less than a minute before it broke with tremendous force over the bow. An incredible shudder went through the ship, followed a few minutes later by two smaller shudders. There seemed to be two waves in succession as the ship fell into the 'hole' behind the first one. The second wave was of 28-29 meters, whilst breaking, it crashed over the foredeck, carrying away the forward whistle mast.

I always considered it interesting that a P&O Captain was named Commodore of the Cunard Fleet. Bypassing the Cunard captains who had worked for years to be in line for the promotion. Then there is Alistair Greer who was a P&O employee for years. To shed light on why some of you may have heard Cunard feels "very P&O" is because Princess/P&O runs, manages & designs for Cunard. QE/QV were designed by P&O Lead Designer Therese Anderson & didthe recent QM2 refit. Cunard is a shell of its former self

@hurro67 It's also British designed, operated and managed. P&O handles a great deal of Cunard's operations while Princess Cruises handles much of the onboard operations and design og both Icky Vicky and the QE. Lead designer Therse Anderson, who gave us the Love Boat, also designed the last refit for QM2 and her upcoming refit at the end of the year. She may have strong UK owenrship ties..but she is a Carnival Cruise Lines vessel. NO desire to even look or travel on these Carnival ships

Ontop of that she got free use of amenities ect ( provided a paying customer wasnt using) , she says it was one of the best jobs she ever had. So the pay isnt fantastic but its better than equivilent kind of jobs on land.

Nobody would yell that on today's ships. A radar would detect it and the bow thrusters would be turned on making the ship shift to the side much faster. Before the rudder and shaft propellers were the new. Now the QM2's mermaid pods eliminate the need of a propeller, she has a stronger engine and bow thrusters (propellers on the side of the front of the ship) to make her move faster.

Great! Which route did you travel? Are all meals included in the price? Did you have a cabin w balcony? Does it worth the extra money?

image if the Titanic had been equipped with a bow thruster, she might have avoided the iceberg. what was the first ship to have a bow thruster?

Dont think a bowtruster had make any differens for TT. Because when a ship make way into the water in high speed the bowthrusters doesent have any force. Turbulens from the waterstreaming in high speed make them useless, thats why QE 2 have doors in the tunnels and close them in the sea. Maybe a radar had gained them but like so often in history it wasent invented at that time. 1 st ship who had it.. Hard to know, some kind of workboat and ferrys where early to aply it.

@hurro67 Everything you said was correct, except that Queen Mary 2 is owned by an American Corporation. Carnival Corporation bought Cunard, then they paid to build the Queen Mary 2.
