Indeed, and the line is so awesome! Now imagine military service: "Joy, it's time to retire. Your life will be filled to the brim with Fear, Anger, Disgust, and some Sadness if nobody sees you."
This is the parents' fault for not explaining these changes to Riley.

You can definitely see how the writing changed overtime. As they wrote the emotions more, wrote Joy more, the parents became more caring than what they were here. This was absolutely during the time where they were still testing what the movie wanted to land on by the end.
@LovedLamb

parents were realistic here, but ideal (the way we want parents to actually behave) in the movie. In this short film we see how parents actually make children learn to help with chores, do homework, partake in activities that won't be fun to them probably because the parents had no one to look after her and the going to work one was very sad but also realistic on how adults become less interesting over time.

I mean I liked this version more honestly, the parents feel way more real but maybe that’s just because 99.99% of parents suck
This is so realistic in the sense that society does slowly suck out the joy in children's lives and quash creativity. I'm glad it was taken out because it kind of shows Riley's parents to be sort of arseholes. It doesn't show a scene of them explaining to riley why she has to take the rubbish out/do chores or why she has to go to the Concert with her parents when an energetic child would naturally be bored. Seriously, they could've got a babysitter! I think the version we got was best because it focused on how sadness was still essential even in a child who had the happiest possible childhood.

I had a similar experience with take your child to work day. My dad is a neuroradiologist. I spent a few hours reading on the floor of his office and ended up asking my mom (stay at home mom) to pick me up early.

right?? lol, dad used to take me to his office on the weekends and I'd have a blast playing with the photocopier, having access to unlimited paper/paperclips/highlighters/rubber bands (so many crafts), and back then having access to the internet without mom yelling at me to get off it so she could use the phone every 5 minutes was such a novelty. I was older for the actual "bring your kid to work day" thing (I think I was 14; it's a thing kids do in grade 9 here), so dad got me to do a bunch of menial office chores like binding and filing and I got paid for it. Ended up working for them that summer doing the same stuff.

2:32 - This scene is giving me some Toy Story vibes. It looks like Riley's playing with figures of Woody, Bullseye, and Buzz Lightyear, and a figure of Bo Peep can be seen on her binder. I mean… Riley got embarrassed in the final cut, and even nostalgic for Minnesota. I think the idea is that, as Riley gets older, she gets new emotions more specialised in those areas, allowing for more nuance, while when she’s young and has fewer emotions, said emotions are basically generalists.

Taking the trash out in another country is WAY worse experience when your a kid. 🤣 I lived in Korea for the majority of my childhood, and let's just say they are WAY more considerate to the environment. But this also meant more work for us. So in short, we recycle EVERYTHING and there's a specific area and container for each trash. So yeah, what Riley is doing here is WAY more tamed. And it's worse when its super cold or super hot. 😖 So I had a legit reason to hate taking the trash out. 😤
This was cut for a reason
Maybe these three scenes may have worked...but as a type of EXTRA short after the movie released. Then we discover that Mom's brings Riley to a Meet-and-Greet with a special hockey player and Riley feels Joy all over again, getting the resolve for studying to become a great hockey player. ...what was the ACTUAL job of the Dad of Riley, anyways...?
My dad designed maps. But I didn’t really watch, he let me bring my dolls lmao. Then we got Chinese after and I got food poisoning. 7/10 experience tbh tho
I understand that a lot of people think that if they did put this it would make riley's parents seem as ignorant and AHs but reality to me is that, that's how ALL and i legitimately mean ALL parents tend to behave whether accidentally or intentionally. A lot of parents where raised this way and I'm sure everyone would've related since yes that's a huge occurring thing because coincidentally no parent learned how to parent the only people they can learn to parent from is other parent friends or their own parents. And sometimes their own parents teachings is not the best ,this is how generational trauma and others become a reality in the first place, a lot of your parents had to go through the exact same teachings they do to you now because for them it "worked" so this must be how it works for every other child else. This doesn't make riley's parents AHs in my opinion it makes them ignorant.

i think in inside out 2, they represent different things like the other comment above me pointed out ..but i think its funny the movie acknowledges this because fear likes anxiety a fair bit, but yeah they do share different roles.
Watching this, it's actually quite realistic to how society works. For some time, the things you did before are "acceptable", until one day, they aren't, and you're meant to be "grown up." BTW, none of this happened to me, I'm just relating from what I saw often
This doesn't even feel like the same movie.
Wow I understand why this was cut but simultaneously it’s extremely real. It’s interesting that her two leads seemed to be joy and, when that failed, fear. Very very telling for a kids mind!
……seems like the kind of job you can do from home nowadays.

1:26 is it just me, or did he sound like Jerry Seinfeld there?
So Joy Act like Ennui?
I think maybe it was probably for the best that this was left on the cutting room floor and also I kind of feel like how the parents are just pushing Reily into something that she didn’t want to do instead of trying to help her ease her into what she doesn’t want to do i’m pretty sure they could’ve found another way to keep her happy while also teaching her about how to grow up.
This makes me so sad 😞

Why?
Why are people calling Rileys parents arseholes? They did nothing wrong in this sequence? In storytelling it is important to Show not Tell, so having the parents explain to her why she needs to take out the trash or why she has to wear a dress or sit still, that would've been pointless to the plot, and distracting. You should just assume that they told her the benefits of doing chores off screen. Her parents do nothing wrong in this video and im concerned at the people thinking that theyre being "bad parents" 😅 cos lemme tell you... this is very very soft parenting portrayed here
surprisingly funny
i actually prefer this veraion.. cause it will end up building the characters up to becoming more close to their daughter at the end of it all to understand what joy is from a child instead of being restricted tad bit and not spending time with their daughter - this really could have worked out.. and it was a major miss opportunity... sigh this sucks.
