Given how animation works, they were probably 85-90% done with this before it happened. It will likely more affect them going forward

I'm honestly relieved that it doesn't retread the previous film, but expands upon it. That's what a good sequel should do. And this movie does it so effectively.

@@Animefan-uk8pw it is the exact same plot structure with the exact same message (all emotions are important, not just joy or anxiety), it even hits the same beats of 1) emotions leave headquarters, goal is to get back, 2) first one has train of thought, second has stream of consciousness, 3) nice jokes about mental things (e.g., abstract thought in first one and sarchasm in the second one, etc) Don’t get me wrong, I really love both of these movies, but yes, they are extremely similar

3:10 this did happen in the first movie too, anger felt bad for giving his idea to Riley and joy felt sad and cried when she thought she would never see Riley happy again

Its evident to me which IPs that fall under the Disney umbrella- Marvel(sometimes) and Pixar, have a little more creative freedom or at least the knowledge that some effort and organic originality are more likely to be successful critically and financially. Then you have the properties that seem to rush products and refer to old blueprints, looking at you Star Wars…

Percy Jackson, Iwaju, The Bad Beach Season 3, X-Men '97, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, Inside Out 2, and etc. are all projects from this year that did good with the general audiences and are actually good.

I fear I'm going into this movie with unrealistically high expectations. Inside Out means a lot to me.

I just watched the premier and I thought it was pretty good! I related to most of it especially when it comes to anxiety and I thought it was a decent watch without any problematic topics. It definitely has the same formula as the first movie. But my opinions may not be the same as yours. You'll just have to see for yourself!

As for Jeremy's Question: After seeing the Last Jedi I needed a palette cleanser and I had zero faith in that ridiculous Jumanji sequel that no one asked for. Holy Crap Jumanji WttJ was a wonderful Adventure Movie that felt like Old School Indiana Jones and Next Level was even better. As for Star Wars I have only seen Rise of Skywalker very recently and it's not as bad as Last Jedi but still dumb. 😑

I got roped into 3 and was quite pleasantly surprised. 3 wasn't mind-blowing, but the recovery it made from 2 was incredibly impressive.

I think the dominant emotion spreads at the time, so if Anger was the dominant emotion then Joy and Fear would come with a little anger.

My daughter, now 14, got mad at me when i explained that the movie was *really* about how sadness is a good thing. She felt the movie deceived her by having serious, underlying themes 😂 Guess I have to emphasise that it's totally fine to just watch it one the surface level (letting the deeper themes sneak in...)

Do we need sadness? Would we be better off without it? I don't know, but I suspect so. Regardless, it doesn't matter, sadness is a major part of our mind, and we can't make it go away, so we just have to live with it.

@@megag52 I know it sounds strange, but they don't mean depressed sadness. More like releasing sadness or grief. As in having a good cry when you're in pain, and maybe get comforted by someone. The thing is, that makes the pain pass quicker than if you suppress it and pretend you're happy. Or if someone tries to cheer you up to soon. Unfortunately life does stink sometimes, and we need sadness to process that and make the pain pass.

I feel bad for Jeremy that he feels the need to go into movies with no faith due to so much previous disappointment, but I'm glad he was pleasantly surprised by this movie. 😌

Moving on without losing a part of yourself, that’s actually a great way to sum it up!

I think a great example of a sequel I had no expectations for but what completely blown away is Kung Fu Panda 2. I saw the first one when I was 13. And I was 16 when KF2 came out. I loved the first one. I was hoping the 2nd one would be at least as funny as the first. But when I saw it, I was not expecting it to be such a GUT PUNCH. Now it might be one of my Top 10 favorite movies of all time. It has some lessons that still apply to me as an adult. “Your story may not have such a happy beginning. But that doesn’t make you who you are. It is the rest of your story that does.”

@@josuegarro5437 I'm talking about all the scrapped story of the third which was going to be as dark as the second. I mean, Kai was going to be way more brutal, the pandas were going to act like a community that survived a relatively recent genocide would, especially Li Shan (and even some of the children would scold Po for being him according to some deleted scenes), Mr Ping was almost going to die, Tigress would lose an eye and Po would get killed by Kai, and the fight in the spirit real would be Po in his dragon form against a giant Kai.

Just got done watching Inside Out 2. As someone who adored the original when it came out, I was very cautiously optimistic about it. I've wanted a sequel since the first one came out, but after watching Pixar's string of sequels that just underwhelmed me personally, I went into it feeling a little nervous. Watching the trailers, it looked really promising, but I still kept my expectations to a minimum. Probably should've been more reassured watching the trailers, I walked out of this movie IMMENSELY satisfied! As a matter-of-fact, as soon as I walked out, I walked right back in to watch it again. I had a huge smile on my face the entire runtime, it reminded me why I loved the first one so much. It did everything I wanted it to do as a sequel; building upon the original, exploring Riley's mind even deeper and seeing more of who she is as a person, the original emotions are more developed, the newer emotions are extremely likable, and all 9 of them have their moments to shine. And it's hilarious! It's been a while I laughed this much in the theater. There's something about these movies that just speak to me, they feel the most human out of all the Pixar movies. And they're not trying to be groundbreaking movies or anything, they're just trying to be genuine. I think that's the perfect word to describe this franchise. Pixar doesn't always treat their other franchises the way they probably should, but it definitely seems they care about this one. Uuuuugghh! I'm so happy with this movie!

@@monmothma3358same. Pixar made some of my favorite child hood films of all time (TS, MI, FN, walle, Up, TS3). It’s sad to see its parent company go down hill.

I’m glad they had fun with this; I feel like that fun was what made Inside Out more than just a “here’s how the body works” movie.

Inside out deserved a sequel and I’m so glad to hear it lives up to the original. So excited.

Cinderella: a twist in time is a sequel that I found entertaining and refreshes an old film without making it too cringe or bashing on the Disney movie itself.

The 1st one is one of my favorite animated movies ever!

Volume level sounds fine this time

I saw it with my mum the day it came to theatres here in Australia. I had expected that it would be busier, but there were only maybe ten or so people in the whole room. We absolutely loved it. About the emotions not having hard lines as to what they express, they did the same with the first movie, when Joy was crying. The thing about story-telling is that if you have one emotion for each character, it doesn't make for good character building or good story-telling. I think, in order to make a good story, they really had to blur those lines in order for there to be growth. Not to mention that Joy could become very annoying if she were just a bubbly optimist all the time, and Sadness would have been annoying as well if she were a downer all the time. I loved how, in this movie, they showed that Joy had learned her lesson from the previous movie, and hadn't reverted back; she had learned ALONG WITH RILEY that Sadness wasn't bad, that she had a place in her life. Immediately after seeing the first movie, I expressed that I thought there could be a lot of interesting things they could do if they did follow Riley into adolescence, and was immediately shot down by my dad, but I'm very glad that this movie proved him wrong. I was very, very happy with how this movie turned out, and the lesson was another very valuable one, as well. I hope that, as more people get to know about this movie, they can all enjoy this masterpiece :)

But it got the internet into a huge frenzy over LGBTQ, conservativism with Tim Allen, desperate sequel baits, etc. Not saying those things don't merit discussion, but it got WAY too toxic too quickly.

Sequel that surprised me: Puss in Boots - The Last Wish. A farcical side character from shrek upgraded to a raw emotional journey of facing mortality. Such an upgrade from the first spinoff film just titled Puss in Boots. Animation was spectacular and inventive too.

Sequel that surprised me was top gun maverick. I had no faith it was gonna be anything more than a nostalgia grab (which being a giant top gun fan I would have been happy with). I was shocked how good it actually was

This film really helped my son 12 realise the world we live in today. It really helps. I'd recommend it to everyone! It's obviously made by parents! Sequel that blew me away : Puss in Boots - The Last Wish The first one was so forgettable I had to be reminded I’d watched it by my brother (saw it in theaters with our younger siblings) and I had zero interest whatsoever in a sequel… …Then Dreamworks went and made the most poignant, moving, funny, action-packed animated film since Into the Spider-verse. Everyone is on point, the comedy is great, the emotional beats land beautifully, and the movie itself is still kid friendly, with my children adoring it and frequently requesting the opening song “Fearless Hero” sung by Antonio Banderas.

I remember in the first inside out, the emotions are not limited to only the emotions they represent. The filmmakers said they tried that and you couldn’t connect with them and that it was a better character arc for joy if she gets sad and starts crying at the end. So it just makes character growth more possible if they can feel all the emotion so they can understand each other

My daughter loved the first one, I am sure she is going to love this one too.

I'm pleasantly surprised to hear such a positive review! Inside Out might be my favorite Pixar film, and I had no faith that the sequel could possibly compare considering their track record in recent years. I guess they managed to dredge up a bit more of that "Pixar magic" from an abandoned basement in the studio somewhere.

I was pleasant surprised by Pixar’s outing last year, Elemental. I thought it would be okay at best, but I found it really sweet and charming! It didn’t deserve the hate train it was getting before it released, and im glad it managed to make its money back with people going to see it. (Also, Wade is the person we all need in our lives.)

The last sequel I expected to be mid but was pleasantly surprised at was Paddington 2, so hopefully I’ll like this movie in the same way!

9 - 10 years later, and I still cry when Bing Bong sacrifices himself to save Riley. I haven't seen the sequel but am curious if there's at least an Easter Egg or reference that Bing Bong's final wish is fulfilled - "Take her to the moon for me...okay." The sequel that blew me away was "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish". "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" exceeded my expectations where I saw that movie so many times in theaters (10 times and never did that before with every other film in my life) and is one of my all-time favorite sequels.

I saw your thumbnail for The Acolyte and before I had the time to watch the video/show my wife asked me about it and my response was "I've heard it wasn't great" 😂 Now that I've watched all the released episodes I can say your thumbnails do a good job of letting us know what we're in for lol

Both movies feel especially important for youngsters and 20-somethings like me finding their way through the world. Mental maturity is a blessing since, without it, everyone would be lost.

Just watch Robocop. I did at that age 😅

On the note of anxiety just being fear I think the movie had a perfect way of describing it- "you keep Riley safe from things you can see, I keep her safe from things you can't" (Anxiety to Fear)

I gotta watch this movie first one actually hit me in the feels low key 😂

I have no interest in ever seeing this film but I'll gladly watch Jeremy's review of it.

Same here. And I get the feeling that most everybody else will follow suit. Especially considering it's modern-day Disney and as the saying goes "Fool me once..."

The first movie means quite a bit to me, especially the ending. Similarly to you Jeremy, I had a very old man energy going into this one. You've given me hope that I might have a good time. Thanks for your reviews as always.

this franchise if done right can bring them billions. It's basically our life, us growing and learning, something we can relate to. They can make more "inside out" for each significant chapter in a person's life

Not having seen this movie yet, I'm glad you addressed anxiety just being an extension of fear. I felt the same way when I first saw the trailer, so I hope the film justifies that choice. I'm also concerned about the plot hole presented by these new emotions. I'm Inside Out (1) we briefly get to see the emotions of Riley's parents among a few other characters and they only have the original five emotions. The only way to ensure this isn't an inconsistency is if these new emotions are only around for puberty or other moments of crisis and then recede back into the brain or something. I also don't want them to abandon some of the incredibly strong and compelling allegorical concepts from the first film, mainly the console that the emotions use and how you see the adults' emotions all sit at a large console, working together whole Riley's emotions right over solo control of a small console. It's a subtle detail that so greatly enhances the film, adding so much depth with messages about growth and emotional maturity. It's something that I continuously praise the movie for. I think Inside Out is a genius film, and I worry about the integrity of Disney as they create this sequel. I'm glad Jeremy enjoyed it, but I'm still worried about these concepts being forgotten or even directly contradicted.

I can't wait for Inside Out 3 when Sexuality is a character.

In terms of Joy crying, just basing on the first movie, Joy DOES have sadness' colors in her. That was her whole lesson after experiencing Bing Bong's loss. And even before in the lost memories. You can't have happiness without sadness. So it isn't entirely out of the norm for her to experience other emotions. And to answer his question gotta be How to Train Your Dragon and Dead Man's Chest. I had no idea how they were gonna top the first one but MY GOD they did.

Just went to see Inside Out 2 at my local drive in movie theater and I have to say I really enjoyed it. As a 19 year old who watched the 1st movie in about 5th grade, I can really appreciate and relate to (almost too much) to Riley and the emotions in this movie. It was so cute and the story line was intriguing. Overall a great film. I would def recommend

Anxiety was EASILY the best character in this movie. It was maddening seeing her screw up everything, but that's the point: She can't help herself and she really only meant well, it was sometimes just hard to watch. When she teared up, that was straight up devastating, she did everything in her power to help and it just wasn't good enough because it wasn't what Riley needed at that moment. I love that the emotions are never really portrayed as either inherently good or bad, all of them have their place and importance in Rileys mind. The chaos only ensues when the emotions take over everything and disturb the balance. But on the other hand, that's also how Riley learns her biggest lessons, it's just such empathetic and relatable writing, it's great.

I don't know how to feel about this. Seeing how Disneys last movies turned about to be, them tackling puberty in a kids movie... I don't think I will feel comfortable.

They pulled it off? That's a huge relief.
