  • @GiratinaofFury

Anxiety's arc feels like what would have happened if Joy was left to her own devices in the first film - if she controlled everything to the point where Riley couldn't process anything other than happiness, it would have led to a toxic positive trait where should become actually unpleasant as a person, where she may have driven away the people she cared about, because being unable to let people process pain is a negative mannerism. Anxiety is doing the right thing in trying to help Riley fit in and push herself, but it comes from a warped priority, as we soon see when Anxiety creates a new Sense of Self for Riley, which only has her actions at her core, where she isn't driven by being a good or balanced person, but by her belief that she isn't good enough. Anxiety did almost everything right - she befriended those who want her to succeed, she pushed herself to become a better player, she set aside childish things to focus on her future, but it came from a place of insecurity and doubt, rather than confidence or self determination. I also love the friendship Sadness and Embarrassment have, that whilst you could see Embarrassment going hand in hand with anxiety, they ultimately choose to side with Sadness, because they see Anxiety takes things too far, such that when the new Sense of Self corrupts Riley, it's Embarrassment who rushes over to try and remove it, knowing it's only causing Riley harm.

I actually think Ennui was a necessary emotion to add to the film, purely because Anxiety, and Envy are portrayed specifically as negative emotions, and Embarassment kind of is too though to a lesser extent, Ennui is more of a much more neutral one, in that I feel like if they were the only emotion to show up instead of all four of them, then there wouldnt have been a problem and Ennui would have perfectly been able to aid the current main cast without causing issues, Boredom is kind of the only reason Anxiety doesnt immediately go off the rails, as any time she starts to get jittery, Ennui is the one to take over and resolve the issue, I agree they could have had more stuff to do, but I personally dont agree that they were pointless. Envy was the one who didnt really add much to the film to be honest, she felt less like envy and more like Anxiety's number 2, I liked her in the film but if you asked me to single out any specific one as the "least useful" it'd personally be Envy. I wasnt a huge fan of the film but this is a great video otherwise!

I think inside out is one of those movies that can have multiple sequels never feel old because it’s so many different people and things we go though in life like inside out 3 can be about going to college and being on your own for the first time inside 4 can be about being a new parent and wondering what the right way to take care of a child and they can make other movies about other human that talk about losing a family members, redemption, losing your passion, (and i know Disney not going to do this but talking about someone being gay and being in the closet) it’s so many stories they can talk about and it will never feel forced because the mind of so complicated

Totally agree with what you said about Ennui, but I feel it can also be extended to Envy as well. If we get a three-quel would definitely be an opportunity to expend on those two emotions and how they would fit in. Anxiety was also portrayed phenomenally, particularly for the younger audience as well, as it shows that anxiety can be good but also life threatening as well if not properly controlled. For example how they displayed Riley’s panic attack was exceptionally done, with Anxiety basically taking over and losing control. This film is a charming masterpiece and I hope we get trilogy in the foreseeable future. Definitely lots of ideas to expand on the franchise! (And possible new emotions 👀)

I personally felt like the emotions didn’t fully grasp “too much optimism is toxic” and inside out 2 didn’t explain(again) how emotions feel different emotions than themselves, like how come joy can cry? Do emotions have sub-emotion department of their own? Also maybe it was inevitable but i dont think i saw enough from all emotions. It kinda defeats the collaborative effort of emotions being the key point.

I think the functions of the new emotions were still undercooked. It was brilliant to frame anxiety as the analyst with risk management projections. But what about the other 3. They could have done so much more to explain how they influence Riley's actions. Something like Envy unhealthily fixating on things Riley don't have (e.g. friends, red hair, etc). Ennui rejecting the idea of sticking with Riley's friends since it's an emotion about dissatisfaction with inaction and the status quo. And embarrassment bringing up past lonely experiences to justify Anxiety's negative projections.

I mean I suppose a lot of emotions cross over. It feels intentional which some emotions get on with other. Which is why Fear likes anxiety but I didn’t mind it

all emotions overlap. thats why the new emotions take a back seat for the adults! and anxiety explained it, anxiety is a fear of the future while fear is fear of the present. and embarrassment is more self conscious than afraid-- as for ennui idk how that's sad to you, it was more neutral.

3.02: Here's an answer for you: (Spoilers), Ennui actually plays a big role in the movie due to her phone's Remote console app. If she wasn't a character, Sadness wouldn't have been able to temporarily halt Riley from stealing the Coach's notebook, alerting Anxiety to Sadness's presence and trapping her. This then causes Embarrassment to defect even more, seeing how Anxiety is willing to completely immobilize someone to get her way. Then Embarrassment becomes the first person to pull out Anxiety's new, jagged belief! While some characters appear less than others, butterfly effects are often used to help character development. Essentially, if Ennui didn't make the cut, Embarrassment's character arc- something a lot of viewers loved- would have been a lot slower and less impactful. Great video! Thanks for helping people decide wether or not to watch the movie!

I like that anxiety has layers. Rather than being an absolutely awful person like most Disney/pixar villains are. Anxiety is misguided and only really becomes a problem out of fear and concern, not realising that she’s become controlling and oppressive
