For over forty years Malaysia's forests supplied python skin to major Euro fashion brands in a trade worth billions of dollars. But that was before a 2004 EU ban forced Malaysia's snake hunters underground.
Pandian and his cousin Ganesan have been professional Python hunters for over 15 years, but they increasingly face a battle to make a living. "Before, we could catch ten a day", Pandian explains. "Now we just get one or two". Fears of extinction lead to the EU ban on Malaysian python skins. But it's proved ineffective and contraband skins still find their way to Europe. According to a CITES official, "they've simply re-routed the trade from Singapore". There might yet be alternatives to hunting and a few enterprising Malaysians have opened up pioneering farms to save both the trade and the wild species. But is it too little too late for the python?

    I saw a documentary a while back on illegal activities in the Brazilian Amazon, and in the end the hard truth is that it depends on what you value more. Are you ok with the inevitable extinction/deforestation, or are you ok for some humans having to find another career? Effectively, what is the greater good.

  • @Nikki-cm2dp

    @Nikki-cm2dp

    Find another career. I'm tired of people using "well it's their way of living" as an excuse for our planet being ruined. If one person loses their job that doesn't affect a lot of people, but if entire species are being driven to extinction and forests being cutdown that can lead to ripple effects which can effect everyone. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. If the biosphere collapses, we all suffer. Also much of illegal deforestation in the Amazon and climate change is not driven by the people doing the harvesting, but rather by rich corporations who we also need to start holding accountable. The whole reason why pythons are being illegally hunted is that there is a demand for their skins in the west by the rich. However, we should not let the people supplying the illegal animal materials off the hook either.

    As wrong as it is , they're trying to feed their family. It's easy to criticise from a a developed country but if you were in their position i'm pretty sure you'd do anything to feed your family. The ones at fault are the billion dollar conglomerates that feed the demand for these snakes. And the drug dealer argument isn't really the same, since they don't have the same opportunities to find work as someone in a developed country. Tired of people viewing others from their shoes...put yourself in their shoes... where they're from a village and have no work and have to feed their family. In asian countries if you saw the poverty gap i doubt you'd say the same.

    Yes, here in the US you can buy retics online for pets, at herp stores.... they're common here so I don't think they'll go extinct per se.... I'm sure it's a way for governments to create another BS lie to make profit off of. God knows they say they don't condone such things, while behind their back they're accepting the money made by such trades. If they were to become that close to extinct in the wild, they would start farming them, and breeding the many reticulated pythons they have here in the US, (hard to believe they would be hard to breed considering here in FL where it's tropical, and people release their "pets" once they can't safely feed a huge hungry snake that mistakes it's handler for a rabbit lol, ouch. THOSE SNAKES ARE THRIVING IN FL EVERGLADES and are competing with our gators!!!! Not just retics, mostly pythons, but also anaconda, monitors, and tons and tons of iguanas etc. Heck, they do so well, a biologist told me that herp dealers actually release all kinds of reptiles here to let them breed and become plenty in order to farm them without having to care for them. This was fairly recently so while it would suck to have this beautiful snake, become extinct....I can tell you for certain, that they're becoming more and more of an issue here as non native species!!!! And let me tell you this also, people are paid to hunt them here so that they don't kill out the gators and other animals they hunt easily here. So if their numbers are small here relatively, compared to their natural habitat, and they're legally hunted, does that make sense to anyone???? Not me. I think that Mr. Lao is correct about it being BULLCRAP!!!! He may not be correct about white people (yes I'm white) being so clever. We may know how to bully other countries less fortunate than us, we clearly believe lies sold to us like candy!!! Most don't even question what they're told!!! Why?? Does that even make sense? GREED WILL KILL US ALL OFF AND WE ALLOW IT DAILY. WE SAY THANK YOU ACTUALLY!!! WHY? Because we've been brainwashed for enough generations that it's become the norm and no one wants to rock the boat. Research things more if you care. Do not accept ANYTHING or ANYONE'S word for truth.... The truth is there if you care to look... you don't even really have to try people....okay... rant over...oh wait!!! Everyone who says the killing of the snakes is cruel.... yeah it may be. I love animals and snakes. I could not do it I don't think.... unless I was starving like some of these hunters and their families are. Over here, there's a much worse practice. Look up how a slaughterhouse is ran!!!! Are you kidding me???? Like a dead bolt through the head for animals that get eaten here and that's after they're panicked, crushed bones and ribs on the trip as they're packed in as tight as they can get them, and worse. Where's the spotlight for that???? Now people love snakes, but what about cows? Baby cows? Pigs? Goats? They die a much worse death and the life they live up to that point is SO BAD. Just proves people have lost it. No reasoning whatsoever.

    Researchers say the growing demand for handbags and other fashion items in Europe is fueling imports. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Traffic International, about 500,000 python skins are exported annually from Southeast Asia, with the overwhelming majority of those skins ending up in the European fashion industry. Luxury brands cited in the report are as high profile as Prada, Gucci, Hermes, Dior, Burberry, Giorgio Armani and Chanel. (European companies) Not saying some don't end up in the states but get your facts straight. Also anyone that takes part in the trade is guilty not just the buyers which are overwhelming European jackass. There would not be any buyers if there were not any sellers.

    I hope this goes the way of the dog-meat trade in Asia, as people are looking at animals as either companions, or as valuable and NEEDED parts of the ecosystem that they are in. I am sad for the "farmed" snakes as they will have a life that no wild animal should have to endure-permanent habitation in an enclosure. Never feeling the earth under it's belly, or to climb a tree. To live like a snake should. (and believe me, I am NO reptile lover, but I do love animals, and it breaks my heart to see this.)

  • @mrkrud

    +AngelTashaUK Nothing wrong with python hunting at all as long as it's sustainable. people need to know that when they buy something they are responsible for all the gains and loss of all those involved including the animal. If you buy a meat or leather then you are are another signature on its death warrant. As a Canadian in Malaysia I saw a lot of the belligerence that is reflected in my home country. Because we still have beautiful lands we think we can get away without strict controls and sustainability work and a general awareness of waste disposal. It should become global common sense that all harvesting need to be done wisely. ancient hunters knew this in almost every culture...now we are ignorant. Get these harvesters proper training if you think they are inhumane... and give real numbers and work out global trade law so workers can have pricing and regulation that will allow future generations to harvest responsibly.

    +AngelTashaUK Right, no difference, because as we all know, cattle and sheep, pigs, chicken.... are also nearly extinct. And THATS what most people that complain care about! Not the killing or hunting techniques, but the killing of critically endangered animals. Noone would say anything bad about farming P. reticulatus for it´s hide/meat if they were bred in captivity (and not "farmbred" as they do with Tupinambis merianae in Argentina)! But, as I said, hunting a species to extinction because of fashoin is absolutely intolerable. Might as well go hunting for the last 3 northern white rhinos then, maybe I can sell their hide to some collector for a ridiculous amount of money. Or maybe do this to Siberian Tigers and Giant Pandas....damn, I could only imagine how butthurt the whole world would be... But most people don´t seem to think about it, but they would cry about the cute Pandas and Tigers, but when it comes to a Snake Species, they are like "whatever, I don´t like snakes anyway"... We need to know that every creature on this earth is important, and no species should go extinct, because of us I am aware that some species go exting without our "help", but mostly, it´s because of habitat destruction or unnecessary hunting. In my opinion, this is why people should be educated about the importance and beauty of the creatures, "noone cares about" Because no one want´s to protect what they don´t care about, and no one cares about something they have never seen or heard of. But you are right, global regulations or bans (because the snkae skin bags are not necessary) would be a great start. The Python hunters would have to get another job, I´m sure they would be able to do so

I highly doubt they would ever go extinct, even if they were extinct from the wild there will always be enough captives that could be reintroduced.

    Why don't they just do what the southern states did when Alligators became endangered and farm them? It would be a lot more predictable and would produce more snakes. I can't imagine it would be difficult to do since pythons are already farmed for the pet trade.

    shelly belly Iz just good skin, snakeskin is good tough, durable skin. Jst like alligator. tough hide. Unfortunatley you can't come to America. then you could eat LOTS of snakes and never go hungry. AND very easy to find. I'm sorry your country is being depleted of a natural species! They are all here in America, illegallyl, I WISH I could send them back to your country. Especially if starving people are involved. If an American ate snake meat and was never told, he would like it. Just don't tell. Excuse me while I go puke

    Give these guys visas and let them go wild in the Florida everglades, there are over 100,000 pythons in the everglades these days and there is no end in sight for the invasive species.

    We don’t hate the snakes. The Pythons don't belong in Florida and the natural wildlife is being destroyed. So they are paying hunters to kill them.
