The fact that you wore the Phase throughout tells me a lot. I tried the XPD version when it was on super sale; I ended up with the phase instead, as it was also on heavy discount. They both fit me about the same, excluding the somewhat roomier XPD hood. The 40D is IMO the most appealing for most daily/casual use. 70”/188lbs/44” chest - size XL is about perfect fit in any Montane jacket. After trying a couple RAB shell products, I appreciate the straightforward approach of Montane. They produce sensible and well-tailored garments via quality materials.

Superb! Just what I was looking for the compare the Phase range! Would have been even better if the RET breathability ratings were included in the chart but easy enough to find on Montane’s website. Some stunning visuals and the wind even helped to hear the jackets material at one point too. Thx

I got an XL in the Montane Men's Phase Lite Waterproof Jacket today. I felt it was more like a Large than an XL. Sadly have to return it.

I think you’re correct. Montane’s sizing chart is spot on. They are sized very close to Mountain Equipment as well. Typically seems if the manufacturer offers an XXL as routine then the XXL is going to be an XL per US sizing. I would take an L in RAB for a shell, e.g., but I’m definitely XL in Montane/Mountain Equipment.

In the Montane Phase jacket, can the side pockets be used when the backpack belt is tight? Thanks!

You can use the pockets with a hip belt in place, but you might not get quite the full depth of the pocket if you wear your belt a little higher.

I can’t decide between the xt or xpd. I need something decent for hiking and backpacking tough as anything and reliable. Will be size xl in montane. I’m a 44 inch chest but the large is slightly too tight under arms

All out toughness the XPD has it as it's designed for tougher conditions. You also benefit from the jump up to Gore-tex Pro, so overall a more protective jacket. If however you're not planning on taking it scrambling and climbing regularly, the XT will also serve you well and save a little weight in the process.

hi i would like to know what is the phase pro that may just came out? What level will that be? I have no idea thank you!

The Pro is very similar to the "Standard" Phase jacket, but switches over to Gore-Tex pro shell, so has an edge in overall membrane longevity and durability, but still in a lightweight package.

@@stevenzhangzhang1130 yes, the "Phase Jacket" with no suffix. Both of them would be just fine for normal hiking and realistically the Phase XT would be enough and thanks to a heavier denier fabric would have more abrasion resistance, so we'd maybe err towards the XT and put the difference towards a new midlayer or beer tokens...

I am currently looking for a Gore-Tex jacket that needs to be quiet rugged and durable for the Scottish winters! I've got 3 jackets in mind, with a budget of around £300, the Rab Kangri, the ME Makalu and this Montane Phase XT. From your experience, which would you recommend? Many thanks, Matt

Really you can't go wrong with any of those-they're so closely matched in terms of overall performance. I'd say it comes down to fit, which is obviously quite a personal thing. Could be an idea to order a few and send back the ones that don't fit if possible. Harry

According to Montane the Phase XT comes in at approx. 500g for a men's size medium

Too confusing. Too many variables. Gave up watching.
