Inside High_Tech_Stuff PE SCIEX API 150EX Spray Mass Spectrometer Teardown

Ғылым және технология

In this video Adam and I are tearing down and looking at the parts of a Perkin Elmer SCIEX API 150EX spray mass spectrometer. I did a little research on this style of device before the tear down and there is no doubt in my mind that a few errors in explaining how this works exists, however you'll get the basic concept of operation. There is quite a few parts we go over in detail as well and general shop banter to go with it. I will probably do more videos on the really interesting stuff we work on in the future in a very similar video format. Links below with more information on how these spectrometers work.

Very cool. The local university's surplus store is a few blocks away from me, I'm always hoping to find something like that. The best find for me would be a functional scanning electron microscope. But anything I can harvest a turbo molecular pump and some high voltage goodies out of would be a win. Got a really nice Keysight oscilloscope for $20, and I got my mom a one generation old iMac for $50. Great place to visit.

I see those axial capacitors still used in crossovers quite a bit, what threw me off was the crimp in the center which I have never seen before. I don't know why those where made like that and still can't think of what it could be holding, it's there for a reason right?

  • @qutube100

@@Zenodilodon Usually high temp or heavy duty i think, the crimp is a non destructive pressure release as these are really resilient caps (fit once and forget)tend to only be in high end intensive applications like pulsers! Ps usually very low esr so!

@@qutube100 Oh that's a good point, it could be that half the capacitor is empty and has room for any spill from venting, I had never thought about an electrolytic capacitor that was made to fail without leaking its guts out.

Those Xilinx parts, xc3020-70, are FPGAs. We used those in sat comms equipment about 25 odd years ago, they're obsolete now but were fantastic at the time. I imagine the Motorola parts are 68000 based processor's which were a midpoint between a CPU and MCU but I could be wrong. Nice bit of kit!

Thanks for the input, that makes perfect sense. Xilinx used to be quite popular in equipment many years ago, I used to see their stuff in larger conference projectors and other industrial gear quite often. It was interesting seeing the intel flash chips, it took me right back to the days when non-volatile memory was a new thing just coming out to the consumer market. Back in the 90s my friend told me about this 2 inch+ chip that could come close to storing a GB and now we put a whole TB+ on something the size of a fingernail which is crazy!

@@Zenodilodon it's certainly amazing how many gates the newer FPGAs have nowadays but a pity you can't get the software to program the old 2000 and 3000 series as I have quite a few of them kicking about. Great video by the way, keep up the great work!

Beige and all lol Yeah the chamber is meant to be opened/serviced. All the fine dust and stuff typically gets evacuated during use under normal circumstances. We are quite mindful of that and nearly everything we work on for resale gets a good cleaning and is tested when possible.
