Inside Forward & Wingback FM24 Role Combination Guide

The inside forward and wingback create one of the best role combinations in football manager 24. There are numerous reasons for this, and we get into that in the video. We talk about why they work together, a formation breakdown using the inside forward and wingback, and then also talk about some issues you may face with your tactic (plus how to fix your tactical issues!)
At the end of the video, we go over the team instruction "overlap left / right" and some of the misconceptions with this instructions. Do you need to add the instruction or is it better to leave it to the players?

You can also try changing the Inside Forward to an Inverted Winger, which interacts better with an attacking wingback. This will make your left flank the creative one and your right flank the scoring one. Instead of using the overlap Team Instruction, you can use the Hold Up Ball Player Instruction, provided your winger has good balance. Btw, nice stuff.👍

Been subscribed to your channel almost from the start. To be honest, the way you do your videos, is exactly what I have been wishing for. I absolutely love the 433. I frequently use a WB/IF combination on one side and a WB/IW combination on the other. But I always feel that the midfield setup is equally as important in order to make these wing combinations work. I would love to see you detailling a 433 tactic with a playmaker in midfield and these roles out wide. Keep up this amazing work. Absolutely loving the content! Greetings from Switzerland

Another great video my man 👏🏾. Been playing for about a decade, but there’s always some kind of gem in these! Finished my own ASM save with the French cup (beating PSG in the semi) and the most frustrating 2nd place in the league ever…. We won everything but 3 stinkers away from home, where we got dominated all off a sudden against LOSC, OM and Nice. Finishing 5 points(!) behind PSG who only dropped points against us (L&D) and a draw against Rennes. Love my 433 with this combination on the right and a (I)WB and (inverted) winger on the left. Refreshed the team a bit after selling Hernandez (50mil to NUFC) and Vanderson (35 mil to PSV). Replacing them with Udinese speedster Festy Ebosele and overpowered Liverpool benchwarmer Tsimikas. Honestly love my team and how the wings work with Ngonge, Lamar, Almada and Balogun rotating on both positions. Unfortunately Mbappe resigned through 2028 for about 1.5 mil a week, who averages about an 8 match rating. So actually quite scared for my chances of glory in this first chapter of the glory hunt 😅

Hurray a combinations guide, love ur content mate :) one thing i noticed with the WB(A) and IF(SU) combo is to set the team instructions to overlap and slower tempo. Basicly telling the IF to wait for the WB and give the WB the time to run into position. often times when u are on quick passing the game is "too fast" for the WB to get into position. With a carriliero (love these guys) ore a mezzala u can really siege the penalty box, especially with lower tempo. Basicly creating a slow, mechanical, tikitaka style that grinds the opponent down over time.

Excellent tips, thank you for sharing! I always try to navigate the maze of saying when someone should or shouldn't do something, or talking in absolutes (like "never play this role!") kind of thing. Because like your tactic, there are so many ways to set your team up. I don't really use the overlap instruction, but when you have a clear idea like yours you can see how benefical those instructions can be.

I really enjoy these videos, a great reference library. I would also love to see the reverse version that is more in vogue in the last couple of years , the W(A/S) and the IWB(D/S/A). I feel that is the harder one to build your tactical chemistry around but can be worth it if you find (fast while good postioning/tackling) defenders that just lack skill in crossing, a notoriously hard trait to improve. Whereas the newgen wingers with poor defending and great crossing and speed are generally the highest rated players in the game as you progress in a save.

If I'm honest, in previous FM's I would really shy away from the winger role; I would always use an inside forward (I think I just had a bias against the winger lol.) But I've really fallen in love with the winger role and like you said his interaction with some of these new roles like the IWB can be fantastic. I love pairing the winger with a physical striker like a target forward because their crossing / heading combo can be deadly

Great video, I've noticed that attacking width plays a huge difference on the WB and IF role. I've been playing a fairly narrow width and that change alone automatically instructs my WBs to cut inside on the final third and make crosses from the byline. This has also shifted both IFs to accomodate the center of the box on attack allowing more crossing options from the WB, which explains high number of goals coming from both IFs and a significant drop in goals from the AF. I've tried to tweak the AF to a DP but haven't really found the balance, perhaps i'd have to adopt a more extreme alternative, a F9. The overlap left/right is almost pointless on WB(a) mode, since it's already a movement they're doing, although it might help WBs with lower work rate to adopt to these changes.

  • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker

Great additions to the tactic discussion thanks! Interesting that your IF has scored more but your AF has less. I guess thats a net equal haha. What duty do you use the IF on, attack or support? And thanks again; In these videos, I don't like to use team instructions that adjust the shape (if I can help it) , since I like to show what the role does a little more "naturally". So I appreciate comments like these that can maybe help others on what more specific team instructions do.

Yes, I've seen great results when swapping your WBs on both side, so that the LWB are right footed, RWB are left footed, combine with narrow width you get goals from your WBs. I feel like the WB(A) duty is super offensive (depends on player). I got decent G/A from the likes of Kayode, Tierney, Diomande and Grimaldo sort of players as WBs.

Absolutely! But there will always be a difference in a role dedicated to going out wide versus a role that is told to stay wide. Absolutely! If you're curious, something that really helped me start to understand tactics and player roles is by watching a full match (so no key highlights or extensive highlights). And then when you start the match, pick one of your players and follow him around. What does he do when you have the ball? What does he do without the ball? I think it's the best way to learn what the role actually does. I find that when I watch extensive/key highlights, there will be large portions of the match where nothing happens and I'm staring at the stats screen. But something is happening with your tactic during those periods and that's often the best place to find issues. Hope that helps!

Cool video! I've been using a FB on At and an IF on Su with a lot of success, how does that compare to the WB role? The FB does still get to the byline sometimes

For the Wingback, i think of it like a 75/25 breakdown. So 75% of the time they're going to get to the byline. And the fullback I think of in a 60/40 breakdown, so only 60% the FB(A) will want to get to the byline because they're not as aggressive as the wingback. They want to get forward, but they're more aware of their defensive duties. By the way, those numbers are very very much unofficial haha. Just how I think about the two roles, but you're right they are similar in a lot of ways. Hopefully that makes sense!

Hey, I was wondering. If I used a IF (a) and a WB (s), would it be better to have a mezzala or a carrilero to help with build up, or a bwm (or a defensive minded midfielder) on defend to help cover the space left by the wing back. Would it depend on how much I want my team to attack?

  • @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker

    @TheDeepLyingPlaymaker

Me personally, I would use a Carrilero, but only because I love that role haha. The IF and WB are pretty attack focused, so a Carrilero will be able to fit in as needed. But the BWM could be better if you want to play a high press/high defensive line... basically you want to win the ball back as quick as possible and that's what a BWM is excellent at. A Carrilero would probably be better for a slower, more possession based system because he can contribue to both the attack/defensive phases What's the formation? Is it a 433?

@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Thanks for the reply, Im running a 4231, with a bwm on the side with the IF and WB. It is a high press system where I try to squeeze the pitch as high as possible to force errors. Would a Mezzala clash with the IF? or would that side of the pitch become unbalanced due the the amount of players committed forward.

@@ryanchan2073 If you're playing a high press, a BWM would be a great fit. You may lose some solidarity in your midfield with a BWM since he'll chase down the ball and leave gaps, but that's kinda the risk/reward in using a high press. To counter this, In a 4231, a BWM pairs well with a CM(D) and a DLP(D) depending on the players you have. Both those roles will hold their position in the midfield. And you've got the right idea with a Mezzala in a 4231. Your midfield would be vacant on the side of the Mezzala/IF, since they'll both be in the penalty box while attacking. They can definitely work together, but generally you find the Mezzala in a 433 so you have a defensive midfielder as cover. Hope that helped haha

Amazing video mate! One question: in my save i have an IF(s) with a CWB(a) and i have both of them stay wider. naturally to cover up space left i put a cm(s) as the lcm. recently my team has been struggling with chance creation so i switched from cm to a roaming playmaker. now my team is doing better in terms of creating chances but my roaming playmaker doesnt challenge or track back much for the ball(like he does but not as much as the CM role would do). is this something i should continue to pursue and train my player in the LCM slot to improve his tackling, or do i change player roles? thanks in advance

Great question, and thank you for the compliment on the video! Not sure if you tried it, but a role like the Carrilero works really well for situations like that. They're more defensively focused, but they'll still get forward and contribute on occasion. It's a great role to use when you have two more attack focused roles on his same side (like the CWB and IF are). Maybe give that role a shot and see if your defensve structure improves, without losing too much from your attack.

another idea is maybe to take your cm_S and give them the individual instruction to take more risks in their passing and roam from position. That might give you some of the benefits on defending without the lack of creativity. (i think tracking back is more positioning and marking rather than tackling, and if you want a player in tackling training, you will want to check which group they are considered in for training, if they are in the attacking group, you may need to spam Defend from the front training to help your attackers tackling skills, its notoriously hard to improve that stat). On a final note, if your looking at using positional play, then perhaps having one of those wide players not be hard coded to stay wide may open up space and improve your chance creation down the left wing. If your not using positional play but relationism, then DLP's suggestion on the CAR is best as you can keep your attacking players close together for 1 touch passes, while helping your defensive structure. For every platini, you need a deschamp.

@@piersonjamesa hi mate thanks so much for the advice! it did come in handy coz ive decided to stick with the roaming playmaker(for now as cm on support isnt showing as much of a difference). im using man utd in my save so i needed someone to link defense and attack but was not the primary defensive player but still contributed in defense so for now RPM is satisfying. also the way i am setting up i want my team to be in a 325 shape(basically a back 3 shape front could be anything) and rn 325 is producing some good results. i was asking for the LCM role because as of now, my front 5 in possession looks like: shaw rashford hojlund bruno antony i was asking for the LCM role as, since 5 players are ahead, we need someone to help defend but also be creative enough. DLP is too stagnant and AP is not defensive enough. one thing i did find was that having shaw on support helps with wide combinations more but produces fewer chances. anyways thanks for the advice!

Hey mate, if I’m using an iwb, mezz-a/s, and IW-s/a, is that okay? Also wonder if an IFB-d, AP-s, and IW-a on the right is okay. Hoping that mezz on the left provides enough width that I’m lacking from my iwb and iw

I love using a winger with an inverted wingback, especially with a mezzala. That's not to say your formation wouldn't work (using an inverted winger), but there may some issues with players ending up in the same general area. of course, if it works, than it works! haha My take is that the winger really opens up the space for the mezzala, and the IWB provides that support in the midfield. How has your tactic been working with the IWB / MEZ / IW ?

they would definitely work with the inside forward! The complete wingback is a more adventurous WB (they have 'roam from position' as a hard coded player instruction), but the same ideas still apply. If I was making a tactic with a CWB and an IF, I would probably have some type of DM providing cover since those two are more attack focused
