Episode 206: Low Diving Saves
Start with the goalkeeper on the ground and using their core strength, the goalkeeper must get up from the ground as quickly as possible before manoeuvering over the step box and ending into a low diving save.
1. Ground - being on the ground to start recreates a possible first save or a deflection that could have happened in a game. Through the goalkeeper laying away from their goal, the technique they use to get up and reposition is something that will always be required.
2. Reposition - a step box is used for the goalkeeper to transition across goal. High knees and fast feet is a perfect movement to train within a session. Yes you will not go over a box in a game but the focus in training lateral movements and strengthening of the legs is essential for goalkeepers.
3. The Dive - Once the transition into a space for a dive is complete the focus now comes on how to make the save. Hands should be leading with the nearest leg making the movement to step, leading the dive on an angle that allows the goalkeeper to attack the ball. The goalkeeper will quickly assess if they must parry with one hand or are able to lead with two hands to attempt a catch.
Watch for:
* movement - are they attempting to dive without a step? this could be due to reacting late or seeing the shot late due to not having their head up
* feet - are they crossing their legs, which may result in them pushing off from their furthest leg which will affect the distance they make and how their body falls.
* ball going under them - are they diving up due to trying to cover maximum ground. If the shot is low are they remaining upright to long or not attacking/leading with their hands
