Inside China's Thriving Drag Queen Culture

Ойын-сауық

Growing up in a small, rural city in northeast China, Neil was obsessed with dressing himself in bed sheets and playing with dolls. It wasn’t until he got older that he embraced his sexuality, taking his hobby for designing glamorous, handmade outfits from his home out onto the streets of China. Now he's linked up with the country’s thriving drag scene, finding solidarity among a group of queens embracing their creativity by designing and performing in lavish outfits. We met up with Neil and his friend Kris as they geared up for a major drag competition in Shanghai, following along before they hit the stage for a wild night out with dozens of other queens.

TheRPGentleman- These people also have morals.... i'm personally not interested in the drag scene but i don't discriminate against them. If it makes them happy and no one gets hurt then i don't see an issue. Maybe worry a little more about yourself and less of what makes other people happy. There are always going to be odd or different communities and cultures that people don't like, doesn't mean you need to hate or bash. Im literally the manifestation of demonic sacrifice and i have to tell you this? Geez, i need a new job.....

SerenityReceiver I think the problem may lie in the ‘reality’. China underwent a population control mandate of 1 child per family. Culturally, Chinese find daughters a burden, and require a son to inherit, carry on the name, etc. Years down the line....severe excess of men. On top of that, pressure for women to marry by circa mid 20’s. 30yo women regarded as leftover. They’ll end up with older white men. Plus younger women with insane expectations of/from men. So there are loads of men sharing prostitutes or whatever. China needs more women. The feminisation of the men is ‘not good’ for their society. I recall when Asian men were respected. Now worldwide, men see them as ‘cuck’ pushovers. I often see a tidy Asian man and woman together and then realise that ugly, dorky white dude is her bf and that Asian dude is the gooseberry on the date!

Guy in silver's costume reminds me of Lady Gaga. Also agree that every guy should try to wear heels and a bra to know what it feels like. They don't realise how uncomfortable those things can be even though most like girls wearing them. I'm very surprised Asian countries, China in particular, is taking this on. Asian countries are quite traditional so I wasn't expecting this. It's definitely not a common thing or as accepted in the west, people still fear for their lives as one guy mentioned his mother's worries about standing out in any sense. I hope people are just more accepting all around. We'll all probably be dead before the whole world is accepting of this or lgbtq+ people but at least progress is being made. As long as it isn't hurting anyone, I'll be supportive.

I am not that surprised tho! In Japan we have a long history of crossdressing, it's an art form and part of our culture, and I always thought that was the case across Asia. In that last sentence he said gender was easy to break (打破), not 'cross'. Breaking gender is a step beyond crossing, crossing gender is just a tool needed to break down gendered boundaries. Breaking down gendered restrictions is what we need to be free. While I don't agree that breaking gender is easy, I do agree with his intentions of doing it. Let's not translate away his radical way of thinking. :)

Drag is thriving pretty much all over East Asia, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan all have pretty big drag scenes, Thailand and the Philippines also have fairly big drag communities.
