INSIDE Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Stratford-Upon-Avon 🇬🇧
Today we're continuing our tour of Stratford-Upon-Avon with a visit to Anne Hathaway's Cottage! Anne Hathaway was William Shakespeares wife, but apart from that we didn't know a lot about her or her family.... until now!

Fun fact: The expression "tie the knot" (meaning to get married) comes from a reference to nets of knotted string that supported mattresses prior to the invention of metal-sprung bed frames. Hence, in order to make a marriage bed, the couple needed to tie the ropes into knots.

Sleep tight is also a reference to the ropes of the bed staying tight.
Am I the only person that immediately thought of Anne Hathaway the actress…. I didn’t know there was another Anne Hathaway that had some relation to Shakespeare 😂

If it helps at all, her name was pronounced "hate-away". Shakespeare puns on it in Sonnet 145. Those lips that Love’s own hand did make Breath’d forth the sound that said “I hate,” To me that languish’d for her sake: But when she saw my woeful state, Straight in her heart did mercy come, Chiding that tongue that ever sweet Was used in giving gentle doom; And taught it thus anew to greet; “I hate” she alter’d with an end, That follow’d it as gentle day Doth follow night, who, like a fiend, From heaven to hell is flown away; “I hate” from hate away she threw, And sav’d my life, saying “not you.”

Same! I’m like I thought she was American…. maybe she grew up in his old house at one point? I was super confused
What a beautiful area. I can see why you wanted to walk with the weather seeming perfect and all the nice cottages and foliage eveywhere. It's like walking in a story book. Very magical.

Yeah we loved the walk from the centre of town!
Thank you for the tour! I went to the Anne Hathaway cottage 55 years ago when I was 20 years old. Now pushing 75 years old but I don't remember the interior! I remember the outside and garden and took pictures of it. Maybe it was closed the day we visited? So this was very interesting and fun to see where I had once walked in my youth!
Houses remind me of my Thomas Kincaid pieces
Fun Fact!! The saying 'Night Night don't let the bed bugs bite' relates to the era when beds were made with straw and it had bugs/insects in the straw/hay. 😱
@LurkerSmurf

Also, the "sleep tight" part of the rhyme refers to tying the support ropes taut to keep the bed off the floor and yet more bugs.

I love these tours of England. I only had to chance to spent 14 days to see England, Scotland and a small bit of Wales. This gives me a chance to see what I missed or revisit what I did see. My condolences on the passing of the Queen. 😢❤

2:30 Maybe Wills married up!! In fact...I think the modern Wills married up as well.
So Anne Hathaway was the first "cougar"! She was 26 and Shakespeare was 18!!
Lovely...!! What do you think of Stratford-Upon-Avon as a place for US residents planning to live abroad in future...? Affordable? Easy commutes? Home prices? Planning it for my retirement in 15 years...💚

@@collettelowry4227 Yep. I learned it years ago from a documentary on PBS, about the unproven theory that Willy didn’t actually write his plays. They covered his upbringing, education, and marriage to Hathaway. Of course, this was long before anyone ever heard of the actress.

It is not Anne Hathaway's cottage. It's the Hathaway's family house. She never owned.
