Inside a Hornet's Nest
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
These white-faced hornets made their nest on the window of a home. It was a perfect way to see what the activity inside the nest looks like. It was definately a very neat experience. I was happy to have been a witness to a part of nature people rarely get to see.
I have learned that white-faced hornets are actually a type of yellow jacket. They are only found in North America. They are not aggressive unless their nest is disturbed.

That one cool place for hornets to make a nest.
This is outstanding . Now I understand how a hornets nest is constructed . The layering of the hive around the brood comb is perfect insulation , keeping the larvae at a constant temperature . You were lucky to have experienced this .

Some would argue that it's more worth it to get rid of them since they don't often give anything beneficial in return. They're not like bees at all, they don't make honey and are much more dangerous as they don't die from stinging.
In America, we run away from that crap.

i hate hornet but thats still very interesting and cool
That is very interesting. Thank you for sharing.
They're pretty chill bugs as long as their nest is safe and it's not hot out side. They get down right mean when protecting the nest or raiding beehives for food. That's a rare treat to see nature at work from that perspective.

I love people who respect other forms of life. If the hornets hadn't happened to build their nest the way they did, you would never have appreciated them as much and been able to empathize with them. For me, a person appreciating a living thing for its own intrinsic value and place in nature rather than what it can do for them is, like, the ultimate high for me: expressing awe and wonder it is the greatest human capability.
You should do an update
In Italy we have "gangsters" threaten the hornets to move their shit. & if they don't we beat they up... Mafia style.
Dunno why but I giggled every time she said baby or babies. It's just so adorable.
That is a great perspective! Having a view into the nest as they go about their daily activity is very interesting.

The nest grew and grew all summer with no mishaps whatsoever. We and the vacation guests loved watching and were in awe of how docile the hornets were (because everyone was very respectful). You could get so close to the nest and they never reacted. That was in 2010. Hornets never use the same nest from year to year, so this nest was never used again. It is still there, however. We saved the nest for posterity because we thought it was such a neat experience, treasured. Still on the window,
That has got to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I'm really glad you shared this.

sugarfoottevis Yo, we had a huge nest in our yard, IDK about your white-faced hornets, but our's were extremely aggressive. EDIT: Nevermind, I just remembered our's were bald faced hornets. Difference.
@sugarfoottevis
9 жыл бұрын
rJay Stillwell Bald-face hornets and white-faced hornets are the same species. "Bald" means "White" in old English. Anyway, these hornets CAN be very aggressive when they feel they are threatened. The hornet's nest at this home was in a very low activity level for people or animals. Whenever people went around this hive, they knew it was there and were very respectful. Hornets, humans, and other animals lived in harmony during the nesting season.

They never got into the house. Humans and hornets lived in harmony until they died off in the winter.
The hornets are like, "We we can see into the humans nest from our house, it's SO COOL."
How can you say that those hornets are cool? They aint have anything nice... maybe kinda interesting, but anything awesome. My advice for you, if you havent already, is to get rid of them as soon as possible.. otherwise they will spread their nest and too fucking bad then... that being said prepare the money for the pest control
Man that's like once in a life time thing to see like no kidding I have one I preserved it hangs in my living room and I always wondered what it looks like inside now I know thanks for the video
I'm so glad you've decided to let them be. You're so lucky to have such an extraordinary view of the inside of their nest.
Wonderful video, love your accent, love the hornets! Thanks for sharing...
I just cant believe how coo this is. Totally the most hysterical commentary I have ever heard in my life! Totally coo I mean its just so coo
"We were going to get rid of it.... And they have built allot up in a week...." And that is why sane people get rid of hornet's nests.
Once when I lived out in the country in Virginia we had a hornet nest just like this on a window. We left it until winter and when they went dormant we removed it because it was starting to get really big.
AWWWWW
It's so neat that you guys are so appreciative of this. I love critters, but white faced hornets can be very aggressive. I must've had a nest nearby a couple of summers ago. I feed birds yearround and put out orange halves and grape jellly for the orioles. The hornets decided they also liked the sweet stuff and used to chase me whenever I would take the feeder down to replenish the food. I would back off when I saw they were getting too agitated. I learned to fill the bird feeders at night.
Can't you people just be thankful that someone uploads this? I have never seen this this way and I rather have someone explain what I am seeing than someone being too afraid to say anything because you might be mocked for having an accent. Everybody has an accent and it doesn't determine your intelligence.
What a wonderful video. I always wanted to know what the inside of a hornets nest looked like....now I know. I was also glad that you decided on not destroying the nest, instead you shared this awesome display of nature with the rest of us...and for that, I say thank you.
I would like to thank you for putting this on youtube. It is really cool to see them doing something other than stinging.
I love the way you say cool
They built this nest in 2010. NOTHING got out of hand and it was actually a vacation rental where everyone who rented thought it was so neat to watch the hornets tend to their young. Nobody got harmed. Nobody got chased. Why? Because the people at this home respected the hornets and the hornets, therefore, respected the people.
That is very cool! Glad you kept them
Thanks for that info. I have a nest just like this on my window so I'm glad to know what this is and what's going on.
that is amazing! you can even see the larvae
when i See one of these...i run away like a unicorn!
Brilliant video. Fascinating. Thanks for uploading.
They are called Bald Faced Hornets or White Faced Hornets. In "old" English, the word "bald" actually meant "white". That is why they have these two different names. They are not true hornets, however. True hornets are found only in Europe. The "hornets" we have here in the U.S. are actually related to the yellow jacket. Yellow Jackets have similar nests, but build them underground.
awesome. glad you decided to film it
It is cool that you could get close to the nest without being stung.
The nest was on a window on the side of my house. I alerted my neighbor and had it taken down as quickly as possible so neighborhood children wouldn't discover and go after it. It (the nest, the experience of watching it double in size in 2 weeks) was equal parts creepy and fascinating. I'm still trying to get the images of the undulating larvae and the hornets going about their business out of my head.
These are Dolichovespula Maculata. Bald faced hornets. They are predators--killing things like aphids and leaf hoppers that you don't want in your garden anyway. That nest probably got 3-4 times that size before they gave up later than fall. Frost kills all of them except the queen. She winters someplace and builds a new nest in the Spring.
They never screwed anybody up. They lived their lives without malice and everybody co-existed.
WHY CAN'T THERE BE MORE LOVING HUMANS LIKE THIS!!!!
I would KILL to be so lucky to have a nest built on my window and allowing me to easily view it!
This lady sounds like Cartman when she says "Cool"
Could you imagine a thief trying to use that window to gain entry?
Great video, I've never seen the inside of a wasp nest like that.
hornets are never docile. they're watching you making sure u kept your distance.
In Soviet Russia, Hornet build home for you to lay your ovaries
