@@curtisbryce5096 oh the internet.=) just fyi, the transmission issues were with the Tigers. the Panther's issues were with the final drive. And in the case of the Jagdpanther, this final drive was reinforced and made the tank a LOT more reliable.

It's wonderful to see the Jagdpanther live again. So much of the past WWII vehicles are gone and few of what remains is operational, just not a showpiece. I'm quite impressed with how much dedication it took to restore such a piece of history.

Don't call it a tank. Thanks to its shape it was rated a super-heavy pickup truck.

I know more or less the story of this magnificent Jagdpanther that was restored from being a rusted holed-up scrap transformed into perhaps the best Jagdpanther around. Also because the owner has been incredibly efficient in obtaining original parts around Europe! I'm really impressed 👍👍👍

Had the pleasure of seeing one of these back in 2014 at WTD in Trier, Germany. I really underestimated how massive this thing is, it looks "smaller" than it actually is, which is quite a feat since it doesn't look that small to begin with. The one in Trier is maintained by the german army, operational and in very good condition as well.

I think I was present as well, they took the engine out because it wouldn't start. Started it without silencers. Loudest noise I've ever witnessed.

@@MrZauberelefant I only remember the Panther engine being outside the Tank and they started it off, which was crazy loud and I tried recording it with my phone but the audio on the video is just static noise because it was so loud haha. I think they had a Stug III, T-34/85, Jagdpanther, Panzer 38(t), Panther, Flammpanzer III, I think a Panzer IV, PzH Wespe and some towing vehicles.

I was in Munster recently. These machines were gigantic. Even T-34s and Shermans were massive. I was baffled.

The Australian Armour and Artillery museum have just finished restoring a Jagpanther, their KZread channel is awesome and worth watching. They have also done a Tiger 1, a Hummel and are working on a Stug 111 and a Grant

The attention to detail in the restoration is incredible. This resurrection is a work of love To see what they started with then seeing the result, amazing. .

The attention to detail in this restoration is extraordinary. Acquiring all of the innards must have been a nightmare, Authentic radios, vision ports, etc. are not easily obtained. I do get disturbed when the narrator repeatedly interrupts his guest. Restoring this TD is a gift to future generations who will be able to experience what WW II combat must have been like.

The design of the anti tank vehicle is so beautiful. It looks so modern. The germans were way ahead of their time.

War always brings technology screaming forward in leaps and bounds. There are plenty of examples but an obvious one would be that the German would probably still be rolling around in panzer 2’s if ww2 didn’t happen or especially if the T-34 hadn’t made such a huge impact

What a beauty. One of my best tanks of WW 2 era.

I stood in front of one in the Panzermuseum in Munster and out of all vehicles there it left the biggest impression on me. Close to it you don't really register the slope anymore and it's just this massive wall of steel.

If I could bring up a bit of criticism - I would have loved to see more of the visceral elements of this thing: I can only imagine what that must have sounded like, the engine noise and all that. A closer view of how it starts up or the noises it does while driving along. The music and distance really distract from that. Otherwise it's a treat, obviously.

Just search for jagdpanther wtd. Wtd is a German arms research facility and they also operate wwii tanks. They move it around quite fast. Which gives you a good impression of what the Panther was capable in terms of driving performance.

Me too, but given the Frankenstein nature of the vehicle, the general age of its components, and the delicacy of the design (even fresh from the factory in 1944), I think they have to exert an extreme level of mechanical sympathy when driving this vehicle. The pollution these things pump out at high revs is unreal, too. Might raise some eyebrows in that countryside setting. Remember, the French assessed/field-tested loads of Panthers after WW2 and concluded that 700km was the absolute best one could hope for before the engine needed re-building.... so if I were Mike Gibb, I would be driving that thing like Miss Daisy and hoping for 1400km before having to tear the whole damn back end down again....

​​@@Grantidge69 the wtd is driving its Panthers for 30 years now. There is a report about a Bergepanther who drove 4200km without any trouble including towing other german heavy tanks for 1000km. Maybe if the right metal alloys are used and beeing driven by a decent driver these things could last much longer than the average 1500 to 2000km they achieved in Frontline service mid 1944.

I hope there's more to come in this series with James Holland. Very enjoyable video, as always.

Technically this wasn't a 'tank destroyer' by German defintiion. The Germans had 5 types 1 Panzer (IE Tank) usually 5 man crew. 2 StuG or Assault Gun. This was a heavily armoured self propelled artillery gun which emphasised low profile. It was manned by artillery units and was designed to directly support troops. It has only 4 crew memebers and dispensed with the radio opperator hull gunner. The Germans had noticed that towed artillery often could not be brough forward till night falls seriously hampering infantry advances and so the STuG or armoured assault gun was created. 3 Panzerjaeger (Tank Hunter) this was a lightly armoured vehicle dsigned to be mobile but equiped with a powerfull gun. This is closest to the American concept of a tank destroyer but lacked the turret. The most famours is the Panzer 4 based "Nashorn" or "Rhinoceros" which had the long barreled 88mm PAK 43 gun. Again crewed by artilleryman they were meant to fire from out of range and under cover. One of these achived a kill against a T-34 at 4.2km. The Artillery trained crew know how to survey ranges and the commander often directed fire by microphone from 100 meters away from the tank. 4 Jagdpanzer like the JagdPanther which unnlike Panzerjaeger were fully armoured compard to the tank they were based on but had a more powerfull gun and often more armour. Jagdpanzer, jagdpanther and jagdtiger. Unlike StuG they had a full crew and even more.

Thanks to James for hosting / presenting. Kudos to Mike & team for what I can only imagine was a very arduous journey of research / logistics / fabrication / financial commitment to get this vehicle to such an excellent end state. 👍. As a retired 🇨🇦 Armoured Crewman who commanded the Leopard C1 in W. Germany early ‘80s, the Germans definitely learned lessons from WWII experiences, the Leo although sophisticated was very easy to maintain and not over engineered.

There is an interview Bernhard did on Military History Not Visulised with a German tank commander who mentions that the Wiesel (a 4 ton German tracked recon tank) left tracks in the grass that disappeared after less than a 1.5 hours. For a heavy vehicle that crushes the soil it would be days in some cases.

-Technically not really a tank destroyer though it is fair enough description. -The US had 'tank destroyers' which were lightly armored tracked vehicles, open top, fast and with a big long range gun. The idea is they could get to the front line very quickly to intercept an tank breakthrough, find cover and pick of the enemy tanks from a distance. The Germans did have tank destroyers: the Nashorn built on a Panzer IV chassis with Panzer III gearbox and engine with the L71 8.8cm would fulfill that role though lacked the turret. They had special long range optics and were manned by artillery crew and all of the special training that entails. One of these is credited with a tank kill at 4km against a T-34. The commanders often left the tank and directed fire from outside the Nashorn. -Jagdpanther and Jagdpanzer had more powerful guns and more Armour than their turreted counterparts achieved by removing the turret and sacrificing some mobility. -The StuG were different again: more self propelled heavily armored guns manned by artillery men and usually lacking a radio operator and having only one MG.

This was one of the best videos you have done. Well produced and incredibly informative. Awesome.

Outstanding video and presentation. My favorite tank destroyer of WW2. Beautiful restoration, information and internal views that are very rarely seen. I saw a Jag Panther at the Aberdeen proving grounds, what a monster. But to see a fully restored example is priceless for us modelers and history buffs.

An absolutely magnificent and, might I say, beautiful piece of machinery. The restoration of it has been quite a successful endeavor. I tip my cap to Mike Gibb and his painstaking effort.

One of the nastiest and, to be honest, coolest looking WW2 vehicles! I feel very thankful that i didn't have to either face one, or be in one!

My father was a driver of a Panzerkampfwagen V popularly known as "Panther" in the 3rd Panzer Division. He described it as a very good vehicle, but it was noted that it had to be ready for use too quickly. A sufficiently long test period did not take place with the original "Panther". He had to be reported "ready for action" too quickly. The Jagdpanther had the same weaknesses. What set the Panther (7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70) and Jagdpanther (8.8 cm PaK 43/3 L/71) apart were their two extremely effective guns. What I found in historian Holland and Mr. Mike Gibb notices her unprejudiced, technology-interested and much more handling of the "Jagdpanther". You have retained the enthusiasm of a little boy, which makes this adept handling of the vehicle possible in the first place. Thank you for your great work.

My favorite armored fighting vehicle of the war. Aesthetically speaking it is a work of art.

Great video and amazing work on keeping a part of history alive. It would have been even better if we heard the sound of the vehicle instead of the music that was played over the starting and running of the tank. It's so rare to have a working example and the sound of it running is the major difference between a museum piece and a working tank.

Thanks for the great video. I saw this vehicle not long after they had got it up and running. An amazing vehicle on so many levels. They had to get parts from various Maybach engines to get one complete unit up and running. One area that could have been touched on a little more is the main gun. Alas, some confuse the Pak 43/88mm/L71 with the KwK36/88mm/L56 gun fitted to the Tiger 1. Many who watch your videos wont, but some will. Although the projectile was not too dissimilar, the Pak43 was a marked improvement, although bulky both in shell size and gun. The velocity of round was the key difference, going from 780>930 metres per second (KwK36) up to 1050 metres per second (Pak43). It meant the chances of penetrating on each hit was markedly increased. So for me it is the combination of mobility, armour, and a gun that things it hits, stay hit.

Remarkable restoration work. Can't imagine the amount of effort needed to achieve such impecable result bringing that huge sophisticated mechanical monster alive again.

So awesome to see a South African so passionate in the preservation of WW2 armoured vehicles. Can’t miss the accent!

Keeping this historic war machines is important and the research along with it. I really appreciate these guys who restore and keep this historic items for our future generations.

10 years of research and part hunting - not to mention rebuilding the wreck that it was before. Incredible. I wonder if the camouflage scheme has a history too or is their own creation. In the latter case I would add some RAL6003 Green; it would even look better in my opinion.

I've been waiting for the German tank in this series!! I actually built this model as a teenager, in 1/16 scale, complete with the interior. I always liked it. I'm curious how they rebuilt the sides of the tank since from the pictures it looked like there was nothing left.

There doesn't seem to be a periscope for the hull MG 34 operator, how does he see what he would be shooting at?

German hull MGs were mounted in a ball in a spherical housing, of various types, including this one. Alongside the MG there was a simple monocular telescope, the KZF.2 You will find plenty of information about it, via Google.

The Jagdpather's Pak43/L71 main gun was also mounted on the Elefant/Ferdinand and the King Tiger. Would be awsome if James Holland does the Elefant that was restored decades ago, would love to see what the fight compartment looks like in of one the biggest tank destroyers the Germans built.

King Tiger have not a PAK Panzerabwehrkanone it is a KWK Kampfwagenkanone

@@evilfingers4302 I saw your post The problem is both KWK and PAK are L71 caliber length and that's why I clarified it.
