Inside a Ford Transit keyfob remote. (and pairing it)

Ғылым және технология

You can get clone keyfob remotes for older vehicles quite easily on eBay. Here's a look inside one with a staggeringly low component count. The single chip approach appears to be a versatile microcontroller designed almost exclusively for keyfobs and other low level transmitting applications.

315 MHz AM Modulated for US Vehicles 433 MHz AM Modulated for EU Vehicles The dual cap arrangement on the antenna is for tuning so you have the proper power with less VSWR. Radio waves are basically a sine wave with a (+) and (-) half of each wave, The caps help to stabilize the tuning AKA - capacitive coupling tuning. In Ham radio this is done with a varicap so the operator can "tune" an antenna to a desired frequency for maximum efficiency. Usual Button Functions (all 5): Start, Stop, Panic, Lock, and Unlock

agreed, its tune is more so to protect the high power from getting back into the RF circuit from standing waves rather than efficiency. ham radio has many smart "tuners" that switch coils, inductors and capacitors to fool its resonant but the power gets eaten up in the tuner, not too bad if its an external unit you can mount high but as this keyfob dont need a wide spectrum of frequency and its low power to start with, its easy to tune with one capacitor never seen a car or van here with a panic button on??? I used to drive a 2001 Ford focus, here in Canada, which used the exact same keyfob. I once forgot my keys in my pocket while scuba diving, it was a shallow shoreline dive that day got to 32 feet (10 M) of depth. The keyfob never suffered any ill effects although the pressure would've held the buttons down for an hour. So I can vouch for the effectiveness of the waterproofing strategy.

Strange that Sir Clive popped up with this ( although its 7 yrs old) i just had my transit custom key fob fail & its what most people have had issues with, the tags on the battery connector are far too small & barely fit through the pcb, thus they come unsoldered. My spare also didnt work due to not being charged by the van. I put it on a cordless phone charger and it worked 👍. I repaired my unsoldered 1, took ten minutes, Ford wanted £250 for a new one !!!

My guess is: In the antenna loop, the component connected to + is probably a resistor or a coil that feeds the collectors in two transistors in the IC, while the component connected to gnd is a capacitor, - all adding up to a push/pull configuration.

I once had a friend whose Volvo key fob remote stopped working. When I took it apart it was totally corroded - obvious old water damage, although she denied that it every got wet. Some of the buttons and components were falling off the board from corrosion. Purchasing a new one and having Volvo program it would have been very expensive, so I bought a used one on eBay ($13) for parts. It was pristine so I decided to instead transfer the 8-pin chip from the old remote, reasoning that it must contain the programming. The only other chip appeared to be some kind of RF crystal so I guessed it would be the same. Transferring the chip was a pain since all I had was an ancient soldering iron and a plastic solder sucker. The transfer worked.

+Brian Allen Actually it's fairly common knowledge, if you buy an extra keyfob, such as off eBay, it comes with instructions to link your new keyfob (and possibly require all your old ones at the same time) to your car. Some require you to tear apart your trunk to access a cable that normally hangs free that needs to be shorted to initiate a linking process, other procedures require turning your ignition to accessory 8 times in a row (this is actually much easier) to begin the process. Basically you're just proving that you have access to the car, because they all require you to be inside it.

As far as ford remotes go us locksmiths love em! They are cheap to buy and sell and easy to program with little trouble for most after 96! and ford even tells you how to do it and it usualy has instructions in the manual to do so, the 3 key fob thing is for when you want to program another keyfob with just the fobs without having to do the ignition on off on off etc all the time is useful for fleet vehicles which can be synchronized to multiple remotes at once, I have two key fobs on my keychain and as long as you don't use it more than 256 times between vehicles it will syncronyze it's rolling code (8 bit encrypted rolling algorythm) you can come back to the vehicle and hit the button again and you can press any button away from the vehicle again up to 256 times and it will still open the doors but if you hit it 257 times it won't work! This is what's more cruel about the keyfob over the cell phone prank rumor that has been going around for a long time, if they overenthusiasticly try this then the remote goes out of sync and has to be reprogrammed! if you have a ford vehicle shared by perhaps 8 people (taxi maybe?) you might want to be able to program someone else's remote easily but not hackable so someone outside your car in a parking lot can't program their remote to your car so they make it where you need a couple fobs to do that unless you take that very specific unlikely by accident ignition on off procedure

From the looks of the two devices on the coil, I'd say the black one to the left is an inductor, and the white one to the right is a very low value UHF capacitor. Unmarked black SMD devices tend to be inductors, and white body ones tend to be capacitors in my experience.

An interesting thing I found out about these key fobs when I and my brother both had a Ford, I had a 2000 Focus and he had a Ford Freestar (I believe a his van was a 2004) My car had a key fob and his didn't and he wanted to know if a fob would work with his van, so I programmed my key fob to his van and it worked, when I reprogrammed it to my car it still would unlock/lock both vehicles, 1 key fob for 2 cars, we were quite surprised by this and wondered if that applies to all Fords of the era.

Depending what frequency the keyfob operate on (possibly around 432 Mhz) sometimes they will fail to work because they are being blocked (jammed) by a near by transmitter. This could be any UHF base station eg police, taxi or even Ham Radio. The signal swamping the receiver does not even have to be on the exact same frequency, a signal with a high field strangth anywhere from 400 Mhz up could do it!

I have a 96 Corvette, it has a proximity sensor, so 5 feet from the car, the doors open, even with the key in your pocket, and when you leave the car, it will automatically lock and arm. The problem is that the range you can use the FOB is only about 10 feet, also, if you don't immediately enter the car and start it, it will continue opening the doors (or lock them with a honk)- This is an issue when fueling the car, cleaning it or servicing it. I'ts cool for 20 year old tech, but obviously in it's infancy.

I really don't see how it's a security feature because if the keyfob battery goes flat you have to reprogram the VW system whenever you change the battery! So if the lock is seized (very common) you can't lock the car. For my old SEAT Leon, I ended up buying a cheap Chinese remote central locking system from Ebay and hacking into the car's lock system. The 2002 VW Sharan I had afterwards had exactly the same problem.

No, the difference is how the receiver is wired. one of the outputs would be tied to either a relay for trunk or the alarm's external input. If you are very electrically minded, then you could cut and rewire it as needed. in my case, that means adding a trunk release solenoid.

I'm betting that the "capacitor" to the battery might be an inductor. It would be letting DC through, and the one would be a capacitor, and would be the "RF ground" point to form the null point in the antenna. It's almost like a weird bias-tee.

Curious. My Ford key fob has 4 buttons (lock, unlock, trunk, alarm) in a regular 4 button square pattern. I suspect that extra switch would operate the emergency alarm - which waaaaay too many people use to locate their *$&%)@ car. Prior to this car (a large model never sold outside the North American market based on a Volvo platform) I had an F-150 which simply had 2 buttons - hardly a need to unlock the tailgate, although it DID have a lock!

Well, the antenna arrangement certainly is a bit unusual... However, in terms of HF physics I strongly suspect it will behave similarly as if you had one capacitor directly in the antenna (haven't run that through NEC, though). What I find seriously strange about this arrangement though is the fact that it would leak significant amounts of HF voltage with pretty negligible current (the tap being at the voltage maximum and current minimum) into the power supply... Perhaps this is intended? If the IC had some internal smoothing or was at least quite HF resistant it might use this as a very odd means of boosting the power supply voltage. Just a word of explanation for those having difficulty following all this: At sufficiently high frequencies the impedance (equivalent resistance) of a capacitor goes down to pretty much zero. With very low value caps this happens at reasonably low frequencies, turning them effectively (and intentionally) into a dead short. However, any capacitance or inductance will affect the resonant frequency of the antenna. A loop antenna is in resonance if it has the maximum of current at the feed point and the maximum of voltage at the tuning capacitor, which is the center point of the loop and directly opposite the feed. Thus, the tap is certainly at the right place to add capacitance and as I said above the short at that point shouldn't matter. Now, here's hoping this makes sense to at least some people... 73 de DL1JPH

With my Transit if you cycle the ignition from of to on 8 times - leaving it on the eighth time the locks will cycle once. You can then get several fobs and program them all by pressing the button on them once for each fob. Each time you press a fob and it's recognised, the locks will cycle once. Then turn the ignition back off and they're programmed.

I enjoy seeing them used where applicable(AVE's vids are the only ones that pop into mind at the moment). +yeoldeengineer It is also likely that these key fobs are using FM and the FM capture effect ensures that the receiver will pretty much lock onto the strongest signal that is at all close to the target frequency. Combine that with a relatively wide open frontend and the setup can tolerate a fair bit of drift as it is looking for a very specific digital sequence which makes random interference fairly easy to reject. But a lot of devices make use of internal RC oscillators that have been precalibrated at the factory so that they are very close to target frequency at typical room temperature, in which case they just need to be designed to handle the worst case frequency drift due to temperature coefficient.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RC_oscillator#Twin-T_oscillator Even I couldn't believe my mind could remember that from my college days but they did drill those names into us prior to testing and notice this one needs no inductor & is based on an op-amp so it seems likely what is being used here. Seems it could easily enough been included in the chip as others mentioned in chips below. They probably left they them outside so they can change them for other makes of their same cars... does ford still make mercury? My first car was a ford that gave me an electronics lesson in intermittent circuitry as the left tail light had been run into (a college girl drove it so I got it from her father for $75 and it needed the wing nut for the power steering and a fan... which cost me all of $3.25 I remember with a trip to the countryside for parts from the boneyard). Thing ran flawlessly in 105 F degree weather one afternoon we took it across the border to buy fireworks for the 4th of July. Temp Gauge never moved above dead center and we were glad it had a "moonroof" which you cranked open by hand. You don't see those anymore. You could park, crank open your moondroof, lean all the way back in its bucket seats, and watch the stars while I listened to tapes or entertained a lady. The other unusual thing was it was the year before they put the 302 in this particular model (mustang II chasis) so it had a 2.8l (171.5 ci) v-6 which revved unusually high as it had timing gears instead of a chain and dual exhaust -- also more unusual in those days. I still don't think timing gears are all that common unless you do custom muscle car builds. That brings back memories. Oh yeah, it had dual piston "racing calipers" back then which cost a fortune... no sliding calipers like today's deathtraps... and I ended up rebuilding them by hand because otherwise they were like $600 just for the front axle, labor to install not included. Funny to look back and see what stuck with us technologically and what has not. Naturally I took it to bits... I'd like to find the starter to try it out on an electric trike. That is if I could ever find it. I hardened a lot of its valves and pushrods into carving tools.

Actually, they are more likely to be loading (matching) the antenna as the PCB loop antenna is very short for the frequency the fobs typically run on. By loading the antenna you can improve the match and increase its efficiency (not as good as if it were a full size loop, but better than an undersized loop with no matching). For example, if it's operating frequency is in the 400-500MHz range then a full size loop antenna would be between 60 and 75 cm long.

+Ethan Poole The loop is driven by two push pull transistor output stages ( H drive) . Because the quiescent output levels of the two can not be manufactured to be exactly equal, if there was a loop from one output to the other a static DC current would be established causing over load, distortion and heating. The capacitor prevents that as seen in the application circuit in the data sheet. I think Clive has i wrong when he draws his own diagram. I have not sen the specs. It might be that the chip will tolerate a direct loop.

Huh... last time I had to replace a fob for the car (granted it was a VW Golf not a Ford Transit), I switched the gubbins over to the new fob and I couldn't work out why the key wouldn't work, even more concerning it still wouldn't work when I switched it back to the old fob, I got irate at this point, so the other half googled it and discovered it has a tiny little thing the size of a grain of rice which was apparently loose in the fob which obviously fell out when when I opened it up (someone might be forgiven for thinking they don't want you buying and fixing your own keys), after we searched the floor and found it the new casing worked a treat... I was hoping you were going to explain said tiny loose doodad, I assume it's how the car recognises the key but how does it work given it's' the size of a grain of rice, loose and not physically connected to any kind of power source? Does it have a some sort of tiny kinetic battery like some watches? Does it use the field produced by the key's electronics/battery? ;)

Does that shed any light? Do you know how it is powered based on that info? Google just keeps telling me where I can buy them and how to programme them to the car. I would be curious to know how they work and particularly how they are powered :) I might still have one knocking around somewhere if your interested (the car was written off when someone kindly ran a give way sign at 40mph and I'm one of those people who keeps interesting things) although I don't know if you will be able to get into it given it's size an it being 'encased in glass' be more than happy to pass it on to you though if I can put my hands on it :)

Oh... modified my search terms a bit and found this: www.locksmithjournal.co.uk/understanding-cloning-and-how-it-can-work-for-you... "Since 1996, in an attempt to reduce vehicular theft, auto manufacturers started including small computer chips, called ‘transponders’, inside the key that communicate with the vehicle to allow it to switch off the immobiliser. Importantly, these transponders are powered directly from the vehicle itself, and are typically hermetically sealed in either epoxy or glass making them highly reliable and resistant to environmental factors such as temperature, shock and humidity. The technology worked so well that that is caused vehicular thefts to plummet almost overnight." How are they powered from the vehicle if they don't touch anything is it magnetic radiation or something else?

+bigclivedotcom It's a transit. Mileage is irrelevant. It will last forever xD Although the alternator will die at a VERY inconvenient time. Because Ford.

I'm another one that doesn't get radio stuff. Most older electronics hobbyists started with ham radio. I just never had any interest in it.

+Tim Ramich I started just after the CB radio boom here in the UK of the early 80s, so a lot of what was available was CB radio stuff... but, I never really had much interest either. TV/Satellite/Cable/Wifi/etc brought me to RF after a few years messing with low frequency or DC only stuff... but only on a pragmatic level. No design, just reverse engineering minor stuff and troubleshooting. I agree it's like some dark magic, where moving a component a few tenths of a mm can detune a circuit or summon a demon. And the circuit layouts on some multi GHz level stuff looks like bizarre abstract art

so...for a while...i only had an ignition key.... no door or trunk keys....and theirs no button inside for trunk. so the key fob was my life....battery died, walked to the gas station and got a battery.....but broke a spring contact that bridges the 2 plastic halves, and carries the positive. ended up using the metal safety from a bic lighter...cutting and bending with tools i carry with me at all times. broke down too many times in bum fuck montana with nothing but cows for 100 miles....it can be BAD to break down out here. and ive been working on cars sense i was old enough to hold a flash light for my dad....saved my ass a few times already. so many cars would still be on the road of people just learned what the "bad sounds" an engine makes....if it sounds different, stop and find out wahts making the noise....thats not normal

Amazingly simple devices, it's no wonder they're easy to defeat by unscrupulous sorts... :S I don't know why ford bothered with locks though, with them round-key things they "innovated", a flathead screwdriver and a hammer become a key, making them a bit of an easy target for criminals... :S

I think Clive has mentioned in the past that some people have trouble with audio on his videos because he records in mono, whereas most videos are in stereo. Something about this confuses certain audio setups into trying to play out of a nonexistent center speaker instead of the left and right ones.
