Inside a CFL style LED lamp.

Given how popular LED lamps are these days, I suppose it makes sense that the compact fluorescent lamp manufacturers wanted to find a new use for their existing glass bending equipment and lamp bases. And here it is.

With the electronics gutted out of it, it looks like you have the base materials for a interesting bubble lamp.

The switching power supply is a 3w constant current LED driver, very common in generic low wattage LED bulbs.

The most important thing -- this bulb does not flicker! Clive, you should focus more on non-flickering bulbs and ignore those shitty flickery ones. ;)

mbaksa So true! This 100Hz flickering sucks. Therefore I upgraded several LED lamps with 100µF filter caps in parallel to the LED chains. This not only removed the flickering completely but also makes a nice soft start and soft fade out effect.

Hartmut Berger Nice that you took the matter into your hands. I did't bother to do that, I just replaced all flickery LED bulbs with 85-265V LED bulbs (none of them I own flicker), and promised myself I will never ever buy another 220V LED bulb (unless I know it's not flickery - some Philips 220V ones are not flickery). In regards to flickering, these flickering bulbs made me uneasy, under their light I felt something is not right. Last year there was a period where I used one bulb to light up my room, and also used a coupple of short color led strips (one red, one blue) I connected to 9V adapter (AC-AC - I didn't look at the markings so basically they colored my room with 50 Hz flickering light). The result? I was very tired after a few days, and my vision started to blur! After that I decided no more flickery light for me - nor the light bulbs, neither the computer screens.

I bought 4 of these off ebay, all but 1 worked, I'm going to take the 1 that's duff to see if I can fix it, still good lights thought, I bought the warm white light, the daylight light bulbs where too cold :)

I've a 6W CFL-style LED bulb in an outdoor lamp for almost 2 years. As the bulb is clear with the LEDs facing outwards, it appears as bright as the 60W filament bulb it replaced. The outdoor fixture has an opaque cover, so the bare LEDs are not visible. Like this one, there is no visible flicker. However, I did not like its light when I tried the bulb inside as it produces harsh shadows very similar to the dodgy corn LED bulbs.

I purchased two similar bulbs off of Ebay about six months ago. They were really flimsy and one arrived with all the casing separated. They work quite nicely. I don't think the factory that makes this is re-purposing existing equipment so much as it's deliberately copying the style of the cfl bulbs. I've taken dead cfl bulbs apart before and their is quite a substantial difference in the glass tubes in those. (cfl bulbs start as one long tube and the folded over.)

I had one of these (only bigger, about 18w) and one time it just didn't turn on. Power supply's little transformer just boiled. Oh and it looked like 5w power supply maybe overdriven to output higher power.

Are the transformers in real CFLs of any use for anything else? I've got access to about 100+ old ones from a place converting to all LED and was wondering if it's worth stripping any out to re purpose them?

+bigclivedotcom I mean actual CFLs. I've seen a teardown and the guy was retrieving capacitors etc, but it are me wonder if there was a use as is.

+Choppington Otter Most of the components in CFLs are baked to the point of only being fit for the bin. The one useful bit is the little feedback toroid which can be used to make joule thieves..

hmm... I always hated the looks of the CFL lamp... and I was really happy finding out about the filament LED's. I can't imaging people buying the CFL LED variant... unless the light distribution is much better than the Filament or the dome LED lamp. Can you test how the light distribution is?

FunFair I bought 3 of these mine are 5watt day white they are clear and you can see the bare led inside so they are bright and equivilent to a 11watt energy saver bulb there worth getting if you like the cfl style i got them more to show off and save energy the cfl bulbs take ages to come on as well as an electronic bulb i have which is 11watt and reacts like a cfl energy saver which it must be maybe modified. led is the way to go uses less energy and lasts longer and no delay in brightness from when you flick the switch instant light
