In this week’s Insider Tour, we visit a 1,001 square feet apartment in the Pinnacle @ Duxton, one of the most unique (and famous) public housing development in Singapore. The apartment was purchased for $925,000 and underwent a $100,000 renovation to achieve a modern French aesthetic that pays homage to the heritage black and white houses of Singapore.
The first thing that greets you as you enter the apartment is the fluted feature wall, which wraps around to concealed storage and the bomb shelter. The entrance to the apartment also features breeze blocks, adding to the overall charm and character of the space.
As for the living, the feature wall is covered in wainscoting and the perimeter of the ceiling is dressed up with black crown molding.
The kitchen features a long counter and a vinyl herringbone floor, and the glass partitions were removed to create an open kitchen setup. The kitchen floor is covered by unique black and white motif tiles that go along with the classic pendant lights. Another detail is the french arched doors with fluted panels that lead to the service yard.
The bathroom doors are quite a sight with French doors, and the bathroom has been done up with black tiles and matching black bathroom fittings that form a good contrast with the white basin.
The master bedroom features a king-sized bed and full-height cabinets with arched rattan detailing.
Special thanks to the homeowners for sharing their lovely space with us!

Hi. Thanks for the video. I’ll like to check why the window in living room has no black metal bars at the bottom half?
Thank you for the video-- beautifully done house! 1) Where did the french doors come from and how did the owners fit it in? Most 4 room hdbs have really small common toilets-- so the "Swing and Slide" doors are more common. 2) How did they do the crowning around the curtains? It looks like there's an alcove to hide the curtains 3) Personal preference but I would have gone with a solid-colour tiled backsplash over the hob to give a pop of colour to the kitchen. 😅

Thank you for watching! 😁
Very pleasant looking living area…definitely in top 90 percentile of flats featured in stacked so far … though to my eyes…the fluted wall feature seems disjointed visually with the rest of the living area design style. Not too sure about the black crown molding also when it’s the only black “highlite” encircling the living area. The star is definitely the kitchen and bathroom… love the dark tones. Very well done.

I have to agree the fluted wall sticks out as pretty jarring. its way too trendy and contemporary dosent fit with the colonial /mid century look of the rest of the flat.

@@ikarirm agree. at this price point, ID should've really done or advised a more cohesive job. the fluted walls and some of the arches are at odds with the european features that are very well thought out
Another great video and this home is done up nicely. It might be helpful for viewers to know what the SGD 100k includes and excludes. Does it include costs of fixtures: sinks, faucets, showerheads, air-conditioner units. Does it exclude costs of furniture, appliances etc.?

A bit rojak, it is advisable to go with 1 theme or the other, not both I think. The kitchen deco is truly the gem.

Really nicely done up and I like the French / European inspired Reno but $100k is really steep! Can I know why??
@ikarirm

It isnt surprising - post COVID, prices of manpower /materials have shot up 30-40% easily. Also theres alot of work in the living room, ie. wainscotting, moulded ceilings, fluted panels etc. The numerous custom doors and cabinetry throughout would take up easily 40% of the costs.

Can’t imagine how reno cost will be in the next 10 years 😮

Just my 2 cts. Yes… it’s quite “worrisome” about Reno costs in sg being so expensive…quite often the end result being quite pedestrian to boot. I think we have to stay away from over designing and definitely over building. Carefully chosen design style, theme and colour palate is the way to go for those with normal budgets. Just do what is necessary with carefully chosen materials in the build. Allocate a larger portion of total budget to styling. At this level … styling is more important than the build. A tastefully and well styled space will almost always look better and more stylish at this price point. And if you do your homework and have a reasonably good eye… the project will cost less in totality. Leave those with big or unlimited budgets to Reno with bells and whistles.

Yes! Styling is a crucial component and often overlooked. You can spend a lot on carpentry works but if you don't style it right, it wouldn't bring the best out of the space!

@@andyandy2684 good point. also, you will be able to keep at least some of the items used in the styling for your next home! after a certain point, i would rather spend on quality styling i can keep than carpentry that i can't
Why do SG condos/hdb have bomb shelters?

😂this costs $100k A hard bitten by the ID. A lot of unnecessary stuffs from false ceilings to lights, the kitchen design is the worst which wasted a lot of space. Another victim of poor owners
