    Crisp explanation as always, Philip! I wanted to suggest a slightly alternative approach for the boss-level question. Once you obtain the radius, you can subtract the area of the sector (a quarter of a circle) from the right-angled isosceles triangle (diagonals of a square are perpendicular to each other) to obtain the area of the shaded region. It avoids division by the square root and a further division by 4. Time is money!

    So much is this stuff is common sense. I'm not saying that in regards to you getting it right, of course. I just have to keep telling myself that. I see a problem and I'll stall and wait for the answer. And once he explains it, I say to myself "I knew that". Like this question, for example. I need to have more confidence in my ability.

    So helpful!! Per usual :) When I tried the "boss level" question I was so excited to feel like I was solving the greatest math question there ever was...(lol) that I made a stupid mistake and got the wrong answer! I wrote down 4 for squaring root 2 instead of 2. *facepalm* At least I understood the equations and principles. I take the GRE general test next Thurs, Aug 3 - you may see a plethora of comments from me in the next 6 days :p Thanks again Phillip! Cheers! -Hillary

    Got the boss level woohoo!! used your short cut of root 2 multiplied by the side for diameter, makes it so much easier than working out pythagoras !! infact, ETS Power Prep Plus 3 had a similar question about a circle inscribed inside a square , and that square was also inside a bigger circle ! they were asking for the ratio of the area between the bigger to smaller circle . Piece of cake after watching this, it was like your two examples combined ♥😊

    Hey Philip, loved this technique soo much. Thanks a ton 💯💯. Have a doubt though: it is necessary to have the 'pi' in the answer too.. or can't we just multily it with the rest and produce an integer as answer?

  • @anvitpatil3260

    @anvitpatil3260

    i think that would depend on the options we get, for example: the boss question had answer 4pi-8 but we can substitute pi=3.14 to get the answer 4.56 which is correct as well

    Hi Phillip! I am absolutely LOVING all your GRE videos! A million thanks! I'm learning so much, but believe I overthink problems all too often. For instance, on the "boss level" problem in this particular video, I tried subtracting the triangle area from the sector area that includes the shaded area. It became a bit of a mess, but I ended up getting the first part of the answer correct. That leads me to believe I could have found the correct answer, but can't figure out where it all went wrong. Is it even worth trying to get help for something like this, or just try to force my brain into the method presented?

  • @TheTestedTutor

    Not quite sure what you did there but if you have time best to understand where you went wrong rather than force something. If there is a specific example of other problems this is applying to, do let me know and I might do a video on it. Either way thank you for the kind words Lisa
