Insane Dynamic Range w/ ProRes RAW on the Sony FX3 | Color grading 16bit HDR to SDR

Фильм және анимация

The dynamic range you can get with the Sony FX3 when recording ProRes RAW externally to the Atomos Ninja V is insane! You can shoot in 4.2k 60 fps in 16bit HDR. Using the Ninja V with the Sony FX3 is the perfect pair for maximizing the abilities of this camera. It gets 15+ stops of dynamic range and honestly if you expose properly it looks just as good as RED and Blackmagic cameras. I show you how to edit ProRes RAW in Final Cut Pro and we talk about converting HDR footage to SDR, while maintaining your color information. I also take a deep dive into color grading ProRes RAW using Color Finale Pro 2.

Hi chadwin, I noticed that the slowed down footage looks choppy and I think that's due to your wrong shutter speed. i think you should've been shooting at 1/120 because you are shooting at 60fps. Your shutter speed should almost never be lower than your fps.

The FX3 and Ninja V combination allows for a compact rig set-up with a camera that breaks existing boundaries and unleashes extended creative possibilities to creators. Add to this the ability to record data-rich 16-bit RAW from the FX3, which is then compressed and recorded in the Ninja V as 12-bit ProRes RAW from the camera’s large sensor at 4.2K up to p60.

  • @chadwin

why didn't you shot your 60 fps in 1/120? you shot it in 1/50??

  • @chadwin

Sorry for the confusion, I did shoot with shutter speed at 1/120 but accidentally put 1/50 as my camera settings in the video out of habit since I’m usually shooting in 24fps.

Dont want to sound like an a** but180 Rule doesnt not mean 1/50 shutter. for 60 fps 180 degree would be 1/120, possibly that is why we see jitters?

You’re totally right!! 180 is just an equation. I wrote the wrong thing in the video, i didn’t shoot at 1/50, I shot at 1/125 cause it was 60fps. 😂 🤷🏼‍♂️ woops

Have a read of the 180 degree shutter rule, it will help your footage improve a lot more than RAW will.

Yeah, the 180 shutter rule is important and I used it in this video. I accidentally put 1/50th on screen because that’s usually what I’m running in 24fps. But on the day I was at 1/125 for 60fps.

why on earth would you shoot in 16bit HDR then smash it down to 8bit SDR. such a backwards and anti foward thinking way of doing things. i understand that youtube seems to hate HDR content but shooting HLG gives you both SDR(for now since youtube likes making it hard) and HDR. please help me understand why people want to take their amazing footage and make it crap..

Well, the FX3 outputs 16bit, the ninja V records it as 12bit, and then you can only export it as 10bit from FCP in Rec709. Which is what I did, and the 10bit still looks nice! The advantage is you get all the color information, but make it viewable for every device without the need for HDR. I still need to test shooting and delivering in HLG, I’m not sure how KZread will handle it.

@@chadwin thanks so much for personally responding, davinci resolve can output 10 bit just fine I thought all the other softwares would be the same. I would highly recommend HLG it is basically the future. 10 bit beautiful HDR straight out of the camera...into a properly setup DaVinci. Why can't this stuff be more straightforward.

This is a bad Video, probably made to get affiliate income by selling expensive cameras and Monitors. Have you ever Shot on RED? This is a big difference to real RAW. You should have show visual comparisons to the internal 10bit Slog, the ProResRAW and RED footage to make the things you say proven, but you didnt. 12bit doesnt give you more dynamic range than 10bit when recorded in Slog. One can see that all the highlights that Blow out in your footage that are blown out cant be recovered in the grade which would be the case in true RAW recording.

14+ stops of dynamic range and RAW footage, yet you couldn’t save your wives skin tones? All the gear, no idea. Grab yourself an OG BMPCC and learn to shoot and edit before you give out terrible advice on the internet.

a7s3 / FX3 don't have 16 bit, stop talking nonsense. "16 bit linear" is such marketing nonsense. THEDPJOURNEY has also explained this before.
