Approximately 200,000 people in Korogocho slums in Nairobi don’t have access to clean sanitation facilities. Joyce Klu is a 2019 Global Young Water Fellow from Nairobi and Founder of Mobile Alert Toilets (MAT), a container-based sanitation solution to overflowing pit latrines of the urban slums of Korogocho.
This solution consists of install containers fitted with water level sensors into the existing pit latrines, which will send a text message alerting operators of collection time thus preventing overflowing. The waste be safely transported and converted to fertilized/bio-char.
