Innovations in Testing for the Detection of Lyme Disease

Ойын-сауық

Each year, some 300,000 people in the United States contract Lyme disease, and according to the CDC, that number is on the rise. Early detection and treatment can help resolve symptoms and prevent the progression of Lyme disease. However, there are still limitations with the current testing modalities that can often take up the valuable time needed for prompt treatment to occur.
Ereka Vetrini and her guest, Raymond Dattwyler, M.D., discuss Lyme disease and a solution for a timelier diagnosis. ZEUS Borrelia Modified Two-Tier algorithms, MTTT-1™ and MTTT-2™, improve early Lyme disease detection by up to 30%. When used in combination, these assays help clinical laboratorians simplify testing processes while reducing turnaround time, thereby helping patients get their results faster.

I've had Lyme disease for 38 years. It took 27 years to get diagnosed. Mayo clinic said it was Fibromyalgia in 1993. Lyme disease destroyed my jaw joints. I've had 3 major jaw surgeries and one was a total jaw joint and mandible replacement. I've had very little help for my symptoms. I was bitten in 1986 and had the bull's eye rash.

Im 66 yrs, old now and I pulled a tick out of my head when I was 10 yrs., old in 1964. The tick was big almost the size of a dime and was this ugly grayish color with a black stripe down the middle of it. Shortly after I got a fever and and a stiff neck it actually happened twice but since then for years Ive had CFS and hypothyroidism now have arthritis so bad and its almost impossible to get an appointment with a rheumatologist or infectious disease doctor. My doctor has tested me twice now for lyme and it comes back once equivocal and the second negative. I know its Lyme disease and cannot get anyone to treat me for it. So, thank you for this video but, after so long I don't know if this test will prove I'm right but, Im still going to ask for it!

I really hope they diagnose and treat you correctly. It's very hard to have an illness for many years without any doctor diagnosing it correctly, and therefore not being able to cure it. I hope you get cured. I wish you the best.

I would like discussion on if someone is not treated right away because they did not have symptoms, how successful is antibiotic treatment in eradicating the bacteria from the human system? We also need to evaluate how successful treatment is and if bacterial growth persists and when it gets reactivated.

VERY COMPLICATED. IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS NOW YOU MUST GET TREATED. THE BACTERIA IS VERY TRICKY. PLUS EVERYONE'S IMMUNE SYSTEM IS DIFFERENT. YES IT DOES PERSIST WHEN REACTIVATED. MUST GET TREATMENT WHEN IT GETS REACTIVATED. I WOULD THINK WHEN ONE HAS NO SYMPTOMS IT MAY BE DORMANT (SLEEPING. ) THEN LATER IT WOULD REACTIVATE. IT IS A VERY SNEAKY EVIL DISEASE.

@@lipanj7 We need to have better testing to determine if there is persistence or not of Lyme's bacteria. Surrogate markers such as C-Reactive Protein are not enough to determine success or failure. I believe this is the frustration that everyone who has been infected by a tick experiences. NIAID needs to fund more research to improve outcomes.

Is it possible for Covid to trigger the Lyme bacteria that has been dormant in one's system?

@@Josue-xd5ru I have not seen literature to support that as a possibility. The problem is the lack of good testing. Antibodies for Borrelia Burgdorferi can remain for more than 25 years. Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR only works if you can draw fluid from a joint and actually test it for positivity.
