I've read a few books and stories about 3rd world prisons, and it seems the inmates are far more likely to help and respect their fellow inmates than the bullying 'every man for himself!' Attitude of western prison systems and its inmates.

The inmates even knew he was innocent. Glad they helped him and he's ok now. What a nightmare.
Probably the most naive man I've ever seen going back after escaping, thinking he was going to get a fair trial and being shocked that he was convicted after all he had seen up to that point. Thank God he was set free and this has a happy ending. Many of these stories dont.

Honestly, the kindness and generosity of the other inmates really is touching. They have so little and they were willing to give even that for this man who looked like he wouldn't survive a moment. It's so difficult to be trusting - it's a sad state of affairs but it's truly better to keep your guard up at all times.

I’ve seen so many cases of this happening. People moving to Africa to try and start a new life and then being conned by locals and witch doctors. Then being bribed when they go to the law for help. It’s so cruel

My sister in law is in the Congo with the government. With her kids and family. I would never set a damn foot in Africa or take my kids. I'm convinced the only blessing.they have is that they are military. Otherwise they might be like Phil

I was accused of stealing diamonds, my restaurant was in shambles, I was wrongfully imprisoned, my lawyer stole my money, the courts sentenced me to 10 years in prison. It was at this point, I realized I had been double crossed! Lol! ;-p

There is a British Embassy in the Gambia, they provide free legal assistance. The couple was woefully ignorant. When Lynn was in England, why didn't she contact the media? her MP? I mean... FFS. There is a large, respected community of ex pats in the Gambia they would have all helped. Thank God for the kind African Prisoners who helped him.

Exactly right. Why not go to the embassy in Gambia? It makes no sense. Lyn was useless too. Why didn't she start a campaign when back in the UK? Burn up the phone talking to MP's, the media...
So they purchase a dilapidated motel, fix it up and by all accounts it's doing well. Then they decide to take a vacation back home leaving it in the hands of a local who wants them to go through border security with supposedly diamonds worth a quarter million. Ya ok, sounds like a plan...ugh!

Problem with us British people, we're too comfortable and have too much faith in the authorities/legal proceedings. If you go into Africa and don't have a savvy head on your shoulders (ie don't be doing deals with diamonds) then you're gonna have a bad time. Speaking of which though, why at any time were they not contacting the British Embassy and seeing if they could get some legal assistance before he got sentenced?

it's the same in all 3rd world countries ...people think they can start a business and make money .....as soon as someone see you making money your doomed ......if you start a tiny business that makes just a little ...no one will bother you ....but they always want to start a club or restaurants and you won't have it long before someone will take it ......there is no trust when it comes to money in poor country's ...

Am from Kenya and I believe people from other countries consider us as poor, uneducated and miserable. But you should visit if your income can allow. Tourism is big in my country(numbers don't lie) we offer new experiences including 7th wonder of the world. Don't hate on people you haven't met. If you have the finances life if too short, visit the place and make your own opinion.

Very interesting to see you left your motel with someone you are not THAT familiar with. My family owns a local business in town and never left the store with their full time worker. Either have everybody a short break or have at least 1 family member at home. Also, help carrying diamonds??? #faint

YOU know darn right that that businessman paid off the judge. That's his guardian angel in human form.
I've travelled around Africa and to be honest, for the most part the people seemed very warm, friendly and decent. Seeing videos like this (there are several of them) shows the scale of corruption in Africa. I mean, if we were talking a few individuals, we could compare it to any country but here the corruption is from the top to bottom, it's epidemic. I feel for Africa, it's one of the most beautiful places i've ever been to but i feel when watching these videos is that for many it's impossible to escape the cycle of poverty as a more powerful person is just waiting for you to succeed, just to take it all away from you. And there is nothing you can do about it.

Wow, these people are so kind to help people.
When it's said they would go to Africa, i thought it would be Cape Town or Johannesburg, i get no idea why they chose Gambia and made reckless decisions too(were not aware of the situation, people, etc). Self awareness and being careful and smart are key to be safe anywhere we go.

Gambia is actually a very popular destination for Brits nowadays. Presumably it's safer now than back then but still, I really have no clue why people would spend money to go there. Another element that people need to understand, Africans overall do not hold white people in high regard, but Gambia in particular is on the western coast and a former slave trade outpost- people there have an especially deep-rooted hatred and contempt for white people.

@@peaceincommentsection6597 some guy was replying saying he couldn’t say “u” or “d” and was typing them as “v” and “w” then saying it was because of his speech impediment and his sentences wherent coherent... it seems I was interested in what he had to say even tho now I don’t remember the mumbled together message

I have been travelling in poor countries as well and my experience was the same... they smile into your face, but all they want is your MONEY. they only pretend to be lovely people... most oft them are envious and they actually dont like you at all. money is all they care about....

Me too... I'm Kenyan.... My husband is English.... But we all need to watch ourselves everywhere and anywhere.... There are good and bad people everywhere... It's just the extremes and environs... Example... The inmates helped him out too... Good and bad everywhere... Thank God for that...

This is the reality of life in Africa. Very cruel ruthless place.
All the stories I hear of poeple moving to Africa always end in the same as this. I'll never even visit that place.
I would be on a rage of vengeance . I wouldn't stop until I saw blood .

That’s the first thing I thought. The wife should have contacted the embassy when she heard about his imprisonment or he should have went there right after he got his bail instead of his dangerous home.

nope, they would be harboring a fugitive. They would just kick him out of the embassy and he would be arrested.

It was 1990..who even knows if they had an embassy there...its about be 2020 and ppl are still fearful of traveling to parts of Africa..because of safety....it must have been way worse back then...less developed and less allies with other countries.

Never travel to places like these let alone try doing business with these kinds of people. Insane story.
I wish they could come and invest in my beautiful and peaceful country Tanzania.....so sad seeing ppl treated that way.
