(서울=연합뉴스) 송영인 PD = 기묘한 소녀들이 만났다. 멤버들 각자에게 주어지는 상징동물도 부엉이, 물고기(블루 베타), 과일박쥐로 예사롭지 않다. 걸그룹 '오드아이써클'(ODD EYE CIRCLE)의 세 멤버 김립, 진솔, 최리의 이야기다.
오드아이써클은 한 두 달에 한 명씩 멤버를 공개하는 걸그룹 '이달의 소녀'의 두 번째 유닛이다. 지난 9월 첫 앨범 '믹스앤매치'(Mix&Match)를 발매했다. 사랑스럽고 청순한 분위기를 강조한 첫 번째 유닛 '이달의 소녀1/3'과 달리 오드아이써클은 팀 명에 들어간 오드(Odd)라는 단어처럼 개성 강한 걸크러쉬의 매력을 선보인다.
"첫 번째 유닛과 다른 콘셉트가 나올 거로 생각했지만 이렇게 갑자기 한 번에 확 바뀔지는 몰랐어요. 저의 솔로곡 '이클립스'(Eclipse)를 처음 들었을 때도 '이게 소녀다운 게 맞나?'라는 생각이 들기도 했어요. (웃음)" (김립)
오드아이써클 멤버 중 가장 먼저 공개된 19살의 김립은 강렬한 레드와 부엉이를 상징한다. 그의 솔로곡 '이클립스'처럼 달이 해를 가리는 개기일식이 시작되면, 오드아이써클은 이달의소녀1/3과 전혀 다른 음악과 그 안의 이야기를 풀어간다.
이달의소녀1/3이 사랑을 앞둔 설렘과 부끄러움을 표현했다면 오드아이써클은 "사랑은 기다리는 것이 아니라 내가 찾는 거야"라고 말한다. 타이틀곡 '걸프폰트'(Girl Front)와 '스윗 크레이지 러브'(Sweet Crazy Love)는 사랑을 마주한 오드아이써클의 당당하고 적극적인 자세를 담았다.
"저의 상징동물은 특이하게 물고기 '블루 베타'에요. 처음에는 당황스러웠는데 특징을 찾아보고 멋있다고 생각했어요. 블루 베타는 혼자서만 키워야 하는데, 그 이유가 다른 물고기를 잡아먹는 습성이 있어서라고 해요. 저도 블루 베타처럼 가요계를 다 점령해버릴 거예요. (웃음)" (진솔)
강렬함이 통해서일까. 오드아이써클은 빌보드 월드앨범차트 톱10과 미국 아이튠즈 K-POP 차트 2위에 올랐다. "엄청나게 놀랐어요. 아직 인지도가 없다고 생각했는데 해외 팬분들이 많이 좋아해 주셔서 감동이었어요." (진솔)
오드아이써클 멤버들 각각의 싱글, 유닛 뮤직비디오의 조회 수도 높다. 유튜브 이달의 소녀 공식계정에 올라온 김립의 '이클립스'는 200만 조회 수를 넘었고, 진솔, 최리의 솔로곡 조회 수도 100만을 돌파했다.
"아무래도 앨범에 다양한 장르의 곡을 담아서 좋아해 주시는 것 같아요. '루나틱'이나 '언커버'는 드림팝이란 장르에 속하는데, 저희도 녹음하면서 처음 접해봤어요. 꿈을 꾸는 듯한 몽환적인 분위기가 특징이에요." (김립)
한두 달에 한 명씩 총 12명의 멤버를 차례로 공개하는 이달의 소녀는 오드아이써클을 포함해 지금까지 9명의 멤버가 모습을 드러냈다. 18개월에 걸친 프로젝트인 만큼 기다리는 시간은 멤버들에게 힘이 들기도 했고, 동시에 열심히 실력을 다지는 동기부여가 되기도 했다.
"프로젝트가 기다림의 연속이라고 할 정도로 힘들었던 것 같아요. '내 차례는 언제 오지'라는 생각에서요. 그런데 그런 시기를 겪으면서 오히려 더 이 악물고 열심히 해서 데뷔를 준비해야 한다는 생각도 했던 것 같아요." (김립)
차례로 공개된 소녀들은 우선 자신만의 솔로 곡을 발매한다. 보컬과 퍼포먼스 모두 솔로 곡을 발매할 수 있을 정도로 실력이 갖춰줘야만 가능한 일이다.
"저희는 따로 포지션이 정해져 있지 않아요. 각자 어떤 포지션도 소화할 수 있다고 생각해요. 비주얼적인 부분에서나 실력적인 부분에서나 예쁘게 봐주셨으면 좋겠어요." (진솔)
오드아이써클이 등장하기 전까지만 해도 이달의 소녀를 꾸미는 수식어 중 가장 빈번한 것은 '99억 프로젝트'였다. 오드아이써클의 앨범이 좋은 평가를 받으면서 '빌보드 차트 진입', '큰일 낼 것 같은 조짐' 등 실력을 인정하는 다양한 수식어가 만들어졌다.
정식 데뷔도 하지 않는 한 걸그룹의 두 번째 유닛의 등장으로 이달의 소녀는 팀에 대한 기대감을 어느 때보다도 한껏 높였다.
"'걔네 몇억 프로젝트지?'라는 말보다는 '실력으로 좋은 그룹인 것 같다'는 말을 듣고 싶어요. 그런 표현이 많아질 수 있도록 노력할 테니 오드아이써클에 더 많은 관심과 사랑 부탁드려요."

I'm sure a lot of money was also spent on the songs themselves, since they are so high quality. Lots of other idol groups would have loved to get those songs.

Yes and now thanks to that BBC is my fav agency and LOONA are my first and only grp I stan !! They're totally worth all the money in the world and tbh I am not even bothered by them being called the billion dollars project cause no publicity is bad publicity :P

Danni Thach At the time of filming they hadn't picked the last two girls. It seems the next girl was picked when the one before them had the initial reveal. Giving them a little over a month to record, film, take photos, and rehearse.

Jinsoul bouta take over by eating them LOL boss! (male bettas don't eat others, but are hella territorial in a small tank) OEC will always be my top sub-unit.
