Inner Offline 'Hammer-Fist' Strike Explained

From a 2018 Foundation Course.
The hammer-fist IS a great striking tool...sometimes!
Unfortunately, used 'anytime' or 'everytime' it is OFTEN a poor choice, with much more potent and effective options available.
To make matters worse...it tends to be executed badly - even by those who utilise it as their 'main-artillery' go-to strike...who you might expect to have a little technical proficiency as far as their preferred shot is concerned...and not just flail away in a thoroughly 'pad-tastic' fashion that invariably demonstrates a whole load more effort than effect...

Wow! Your knowledge base of body mechanics is off the charts. It’s certainly at the instructor level of a PhD. Thanks so very much for real coaching on proper technique.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua used the hammer fist to great effect in several of his Pride FC fights. It's all about using the right tool in the right situation.

Solid...solid instruction. Damn, I was doing it for 20 years, and in a couple of minutes changed the way I do a hammer fist. It's that obvious.

This is really good self defense advice. Straight forward, cut and dry, no trying to throw fancy martial arts techniques in. It's easy to tell you have the experience to realize what is actually important in a street fight

I agree with Mick..the hammer strike is for certain strike situations. I like it for close range, where one of your hands is up enough already and you can drive straight onto the nose, or once again close range and you have a chance to hammer to the side of the neck after putting in a few knees and the other guy is already bent forward.

When I was a young man in the1970 and the 1980 I got into a lot of street fights I tried to stay in tight keep him on his heels and use my right punch I would imagine I was going to drive my fist down his throat and I mean down his throat. I would fix on a spot at the nose and upper lip then I would then hit again and again trying to drive my fist down his throat. one guy had to have 11 stiches to sew his lip back on. but it is all in your mind like a marital arts fighter breaking a board or a cinder block .

Been thinking this for a long time about some use of hammer fist but never seen it critiqued like this before. Good vid.

I’m really glad I found your videos, so informative!!! Besides watching your videos and practicing all the time, do you recommend anything that is really useful that I can take up? ie Krav Maga?

I find the vertical punch zips out the best. Even better than the "palm down" or horizontal punch. Not the WC vertical punch btw. Using the 2 front knuckles gets results- with a sober person.

How about the chop or palm...is the hammer the strongest of the three? To the neck or back of the neck if possible.

citic101 I'm new to him.. Based on my research.. He names the strikes as: Highline- any strike delivered straight to the head, could be a punch, palm strike, elbow... Low line- like low kicks to the shins.. Etc Offline- weird angled shots like the one on the video

Overhand highline strike was the first one he taught me. Very similar to a cross in boxing, using both clenched fist or palm...depending.

depends on the range. the simple answer is: the closer you are, the more "flail" you need.

I hammer fisted a guy once. My friend got out of a car to fight a guy and he left it in reverse and the car door knocked both guys over. I had gotten out and ran around the car and when the this big guy was getting up on his hands and knees facing the ground, I stood in front of him and hammer fisted him in the back, right below the neck and he went down lying flat on his face and we took off before being surrounded near Detroit. You have to bend your knees and drop your waist like you're trying to smash through a table or kick his face if he's bent over.

A palm strike is way safer and more powerful than a punch when hitting in the head as you can break your hand if you should hit your attacker in the forehead.

@BOB1 CLO keyboard warrior bullshit. If you hit someone so hard in the forehead that you break your hand, that fool is going to be out cold, Dudes talking out of his ass. It's hard enough to get a clean hit to the forehead.

@BOB1 CLO I wouldn't waste time concerning yourself with something that could happen if the stars are aligned just perfectly. A person so fragile they break bones when attempting a punch probably isn't getting into fist fights, Teaching them hand to hand combat would be worthless, force multipliers would be the way to go. So, no; Just no.
