Inherit the Hunt - 2019 Recurve Bow Hunting Elk

Спорт

September is the month my entire year revolves around. It marks the changing os seasons, the beginning of the time of year when I’m most in my element. Elk Hunting season is here! My annual pilgrimage to the high country in search of bugling bulls has marked this beginning since I moved to Idaho over a decade ago. But this archery season will be different. This year, the whole family is going.
Although Coye and Fen have been recurve bow hunting with me many times before, this will mark their first extended trip. With the entire month stretched out before us, and no commitments dragging us back, there’s no telling how long we’ll be out. We loaded down the Power Wagon with everything but the kitchen sink and headed to the mountains!
We had an absolute blast! Fen surprised me, showing a strong desire to tag along even in the rough country. Public land elk hunting can be tough, but he hung right with me hiking through the rugged country. We took some time to explore some caves, shoot our primitive bows, and even hiked up to an alpine lake to do a little fishing and, hopefully, catch some brook trout!
Over the next 10 days I put in my time, settling into the September grind - up early and out late. But despite my best I was having a damn hard time finding a bull that wanted to play my game. Every call, every bugle, met with a depressing silence. It wasn’t until later in the season that I discovered why!
Bowhunting elk in the presence of wolves is a whole different ballgame. It isn’t that the leave, but that they up their game. When all they have to evade are sloppy human hunters they let their guard down. But when wolves are around, nothing goes unnoticed.
Although I love the heart pounding excitement of calling in a hot bull, I’m not going to beat my head against the wall if it’s just not happening. Quite elk call for a page from the whitetail playbook. Figure out where they’re going and get there first!
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bowhunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

10/10 mate, I respect your honesty with your audience and am inspired by your approach. I had been trying for two years to harvest my first deer (fallow, red and rusa) but was never in a position to be comfortable with a shot. Last month I took my 7 year old son on a four day camping trip and we stalked and harvested two reds (a spiker and a doe). It was my little blokes first hunting trip and it was him who spotted both deer and started both stalks. Cheers and well done from Australia.

Lots of important lessons for the young fella but the best one was the one he's clearly already learned; the curiosity to ask "Dad, what is that?". He'll learn so much more asking questions than he ever will being handed all the information without asking. Good job. Maybe one day we'll be watching his own hunting channel :)

Clay, I wish that I could back time up. In 1987 I took my wife and 3 year old on an elk hunt. We had a wonderful time even though I was not successful we saw elk and I had a shot. Two weeks was not enough and now that son took his son to moose camp last year. As with Fen shooting the pig this brings back memories that are among my most precious things. You sir, a blessed man! Keep it up.

Time well spent with family is always a good investment. Your boys will remember this experience forever. Years from now when they have their own families maybe they will take them out and relive the adventures they had as kids. Memories of life's experiences are free. They can make you smile or make you cry. I hope one day they thank you for such great memories.

I had the same issue in Oregon hunting Elk for the first time ever last year. 0 bugles the whole time even though I knew the Elk were in there. I haven't figured out hunting the ungulates yet, but I figured out the bears. I am hard pressed to find anyone willing to hike like your kids do though, truly impressive. It sounds like fun to people until the reality sets in. Stuck solo hunting until my boy doesn't need diapers I guess haha. Thanks for the content. Jessie.

You have an amazing family, Clay Hayes! You and your wife are doing a fine job of raising those boys and they're tough as nails. I'm sure that I would enjoy visiting with you some time and sharing a few life and archery experiences.

Your best yet! You make the best outdoor videos. Yes, the wolves are there and decimating the elk and moose population. The grizzly also make it very interesting.
