When you made that zero-clearance insert on the miter saw, you forgot to put a strip of tape on first to prevent splintering.

I use an elastic band around the shaft of the bit for depth measurements, as it saves wiping off pen marks, can be adjusted to move up or down for other depths and slips off easily, once the bit is removed from the chuck.

When cutting some plywood or melamine with a jigsaw I use the downward facing toothed jigsaw blade. Great for cutting out holes in laminate bench tops as well. Just remember to have the blade going straight up and down.

Works the same with screws near the edges of wood too, run them backwards for a bit, then send it. Keeps the wood from splitting as easy.

The dowel is split and has a wedge put into it. The wedge makes an extremely tight joint that won't loosen over time. It pulls the materials together and then locks it. This type of joinery is used for kids toys. You avoid nails and screws that can, and eventually do, come out.

Pretty good tips, although I don't understand why he taped the washer to the metal piece before drilling the hole, unless it was just to keep the lube oil from running off. Also, taping wood laminate before sawing helps, but it's better to score it with a sharp knife first, get much cleaner cut.

Great video and tips - but when it comes to safety, if you’re going to cut something so small on the mitre saw, I’d advise to make a jig with sandpaper on top of this ( just a flat wide piece of thin MDF or Plywood that sits on top of the mitre saw surface and held in place with clamps), then also cut a stick of wood with sand paper covering it. Both of these used in conjunction can hold that small piece safely. Your fingers should never be that close to the blade - yup, it may have been okay today, or maybe tomorrow, but at some point your luck will run out. Safety first, my friend.

@@garyklein4679 I did not know that! Do you know the reason behind that? My only guesses might be lead in the solder and creating a more conductive section in a transmission line (meaning, a failure would happen elsewhere in a circuit).

@@garyklein4679 ... that’s because you use those useless wire nuts that are illegal everywhere else ... 😂😂😂 In the US, most places are subject to the NEC, here is article 110.14(B): (B) Splices. Conductors shall be spliced or joined with splicing devices identified for the use or by brazing, welding, or soldering with a fusible metal or alloy. Soldered splices shall first be spliced or joined so as to be mechanically and electrically secure without solder and then be soldered. All splices and joints and the free ends of conductors shall be covered with an insulation equivalent to that of the conductors or with an insulating device identified for the purpose.Wire connectors or splicing means installed on conductors for direct burial shall be listed for such use.

@@scottdebruyn7038 solder is frowned upon unless a good mechanical connection is made first as under ‘fault conditions’ conductors are allowed to rise far above the maximum operating temperatures of 70/90C for PVC/XLPE respectively

@@andyxox4168 '...unless good mechanical connection is made..." As an electronics designer, that's a given. I've often thought of solder as 'sauce for the goose'. Solder by itself is folly. Where is the code Gary Klein refers to that makes it illegal to solder a soundly made mechanical joint? Any idea?
