Infrared sensor in TV caused remote control not to work.

Every now and then someone brings in a remote control for repair, and I come to discover their remote control is working fine, but they have problem with their TVs infrared sensor. In this video I show what the sensor looks like and talk a little about testing them.

Here is a solution to try first before going down the replacement track. My remote wouldn't operate my Samsung 55" curved screen TV at all. It worked fine on my other Samsung TV and the other TV remote would not work on the curved screen. I went through all the usual reset procedures, replacing batteries, powering down the TV, resetting as best I could without the remote to use and nothing. I was ready to proceed with a repair or buying a new TV. Then I had one last thing I had not tried. I removed the power cord, removed all plugged in devices like a thumb drive ,a powered external 4TB drive and even the connection box this TV comes with. I held the power button on the TV on for 30 Seconds, then plugged the connection box back in but not the external 4GB hard drive. Powered up the TV and straight away it connected to the remote and all is back to normal. Now I am not sure which part of that procedure did the trick, but I am guessing that the only thing that was still live with power when I previously powered down was the 4TB external USB drive. Maybe somehow it was holding power to the internal TV USB system but as soon as I rebooted without it plugged it all went back to normal. I have since plugged the hard drive back in as I use it for recording TV programs and it is still working fine. This might just bean option for anyone else with similar issues to try.

I have a Hitachi plasma that intermittently fails to see the remote. Seems like it starts working after the TV has been on for a while, but not always. I guess I'll just try replacing the sensor. I had one of those test strips when I used to repair photocopiers. I had such a hard time finding one on the internet, I thought I imagined it. Finally found one from MCM electronics.

I have the question! Same thing happens with my two-year old Sony Bravia 4K television. I replaced the batteries in the remote. Nothing. Ordered a new remote. Nothing. My cable box remote control can turn the tv on/off and change the volume but the TV wouldn't respond to it, either. The day after I received the new remote control the IR sensor suddenly began working with all three remotes. Now, it's happening again. Really frustrating. It's a 55" and not easy for me to get it to an authorized repair shop.

I have this LG bluray player that sometimes refuses to accept the signal from the remote and sometimes it accepts it normally. Like, one day it will not work at all, but leaving it for a few days it works as usual until at some point it just refuses further inputs. Is it possible for the sensor to "go bad" partially like that?

Thanks for the video. But what if i don't have a similar IR sensor component, like you do, from a scrapped TV? There are literally dozens of IR sensor part numbers (TSOP, TSSP followed by designators for frequency range, voltage output) available... but which one do I need? I have yet to find a TV schematic that breaks it down to that component level.

The TV appears to be getting a signal from the remote, as the small power light at the bottom right corner of the TV (which is normally a solid blue when powered on) will flicker red as if there is communication going on, yet the TV doesn't respond to any commands pressed on the remote. Any ideas?

Infrared is parasitic light with regard to camera image - it makes bright red objects such as flowers appear washed out and greyish or purplish in sunlight. The more upmarket the camera, the more the manufacturer strives for good colour reproduction and the better their IR-cut filters will be. IR-cut filter is usually a separate plate within camera assembly, it's not a part of the CMOS matrix, unlike the Bayes filter, so the manufacturer can specify to get a different one made without it costing them a fortune. But it pays to get the shittiest camera possible if you want your remote controls to shine brightly.

+joblessalex K You gave me a clue when you mentioned that your transformer is whining. This generally means you have a shorted component on the output side of your power supply which is causing the switching transistor to slow down the duty cycle/frequency of pulses going to your transformer. I would suggest you check all the transformer output lines for shorts to ground. You may have a shorted diode or voltage regulator on the output side causing your power supply to malfunction.

Just got a free 2012 42" RCA from Craigslist. It will turn on and play great for hours. Then turn it off and it won't turn back on. I unplugged the power cord and reconnected and the remote turned the set on. Tried that again didn't work. Thought maybe a bad cord. But later figured it may be the on part of the sensor is dying. When it plays I can change volume and channels with no problem. Was going to try and manually turn it on but don't see a manual switch. I found that the remote for my 32" Vizio would also change the channels and turn the RCA off, but then have the problem of not wanting to turn back on. So I figured it was not the remote and must be the sensor is intermittently picking up the signal to turn on. What do you think?

Seems that if I turn the RCA TV power cord off/ switch off power surge protector for a while and switch back on the TV will turn on with remote. I just noticed this from a few attempts so not sure if this is coincidence or not. Was not turning on last night after using set. Cut off power cord and this morning plugged back in and the remote turned the TV on. I turned it back off and then the remote would not turn the TV back on. Everything on the remote is functioning except it will not turn on the set after turning off set. After set would not turn back on this morning I cut off power supply and fifteen or twenty minutes later plugged in and the remote turned the TV on again. So seems this is a definite pattern. Any suggestions other than just cutting power cord off after every use?

For now the RCA remote is turning off the TV and after I turn it off it turns right back on with the remote. So maybe this disconnect from power reset it somehow or this is just a temporary condition that will again return to a problem. I will have to wait and see as the remote seems to be operating correctly now.

  • @zedcartwright5267

Nope this thing is doing it again. Remote not wanting to turn on the set but when it does turn on it runs great and the remote works fine. Seems that if I turn off the power supply then plug back in a little light comes on the sensor. Sometimes the set will turn back on with the remote after doing this and the sensor light will go out. Sometimes the light just goes off the sensor when I punch the remote power button and the set does not come on. Sometimes after playing the set and turning it off I can turn it on with the remote. Other times I can not. Thinking maybe I need to take the back off the set and try cleaning the IR sensor. Anybody have this problem or know what causes it?

I have opened the remote, cleaned it, replaced the batteries, tested it using my cell phone and discovered that only 80% of the buttons work on the remote. That said, when I power-up the TV using the side keys placed on the actual unit itself and then try to get a response using the remote, it's totally unresponsive! Do all the remote buttons need to work for it to be able to control my TV or is this a clear case of the problem being my actual TV receiver? I look forward to your reply, thank you. I've seen situations where only a few buttons on the remote work, so it's possible that the problem is the IR sensor on the TV, but I would suggest you buy a universal programable remote control, and see if you can get that to work. If it does naturally you can assume the problem isn't in the TV.

Hi, I have Samsung LCD connected to setup box of GTPL When I increase the volume by TV remote control it automatically decreases after some time. I don't understand where is the problem so please suggest me what's wrong with my TV. Thank you.

A problem such as you describe is often times due to a bad tactile switch that turns down the volume. Once you set your TV volume to the desired level, you can try disconnecting the board that contains all the tactile switches for your volume, channel select and other buttons, and see if the problem goes away. If it does there is a good chance one of your switches has become leaky. Sometimes it's the switch board itself that may have the problem, What can be strange about leaky switches is that I haven't always been able to detect their unwanted conductivity issue with my ohmmeter, but replacing one or Two of them has often solved the problem.

I've swapped the sensors often with no problems, but just make sure you get the polarity correct, or they it will not work.

Are you sure there are no buttons on the TV? Sometimes they are well hidden under the face of the display or on the side in places you would not expect to find them.

Grants Pass isn't going to click with most viewers to determine if your local. I would make it Grants Pass, OR if you can change your name. Nice video though, thanks. I did not realize I would need a camera to see the light. I trashed a remote control seller and now realize I might be wrong and it's the tv.

I have an air conditioner that won't respond to remote control till the remote controller is brought very close to the sensor, almost touching it. I'm sure the remote controller is fine, but the air conditioner only responds to it when it is very close. Please what could be the problem? Is the receiver weak or what?
