Influences for ICONIC Imperial Guard Regiments PART 1 | Warhammer 40k Lore
Today I'm going to look into some historical, fictional, and cultural inspirations for the most iconic Imperial Guard regiments. I'll be discussing the top three most popular ones, the Cadians, Kreig, and Catachan. Tune in to learn about these dudes and let me know who your favorite regiment is and why!
I always want to put out accurate lore, but I recognize the real and likely possibility I will make mistakes. Entertainment is the first priority of the Quick 40K lore series, and I always implore you to look into the topics discussed more in depth. Read the books, play the game, and watch other creators too!
As always if you have any constructive criticism, advice, or suggestions please share!

I would like to see a... ( buckle up this is going to be a long one, this also my personal Fan Fiction) Psyker Kriegsmen, Who becomes a Grey Knight Captin. Essentially a Rogue Pysker living on Krieg's last remaining Hive City Ferrograd. The Psyker is desperate, and need some quick cash so he trades some of his DNA (Blood, Hair, Saliva, Sperm. Whatever is required to make a clone). Not knowing what was going to happen with it. The Rouge Psyker exits the story (He's no longer useful to the greater narrative) A batch of Krieg Clones are made unaware that some of them are Psykers. (Not that it's going to matter since majority of Kriegsmen die before their 18th birthday). There is one of these clones who live long enough to awaken, and use his Psyker Powers. He becomes a great boon for the Death Korps. So his role is made much important than that of the average cannon fodder Kriegsmen. The Psyker Kriegsmen starts making a name for himself. So much so that the Inquisition finds out about him. This Leads to the long, and arduous trials that Pyskers undergo to see if he is of any use to them, or he needs to be turned into a battery for the Emperor. The testing on him leads to them confirming what we already know. He's a damn good fighter, with an incredible ability to have extreme control over warp (dude kicks ass, and is an amazing Psyker because the Kriegsmen basically don't have emotion, and don't know fear). So word spreads throughout the Inquisition that there is a Psyker Kriegsmen. Some Grey Knight Captains (possibly even Kaldor Draigo, or whatever sound more plausible to you) get sahold of this information, and want to scout the Kriegsmen. The Psyker Kriegsmen go's through the Grey Knight trials. He does exceptionally well, as expected of a Kriegsmen. He goes through some more Psyker Trials and Training to become a more skilled Psyker. Finally after all the Trials, and Training he becomes a Grey Knight. He gets the Emperor's Gene Seed, and Silver Terminator Armor. But it's thought a good idea. To allow him to keep his memories since they know his secret. That he's a clone, and how clones are made. It was also thought that having his memories as a soldier could make you a better Kight. His one goal is to serve the Emperor, and follow orders, and kill chaos demons. Over time he becomes his own Knight Captin. Where he clones him self as the template for his branch of the Grey Knights will be made up of Clones. The Inquisition turns a blind eye to this because they just want results. Finally these Grey Knight will take ordinary Kriegsmen turn them into clandestine set of foot soldiers to take into battle to split the defense of the demonic threats they fight. Essentially the foot soldiers are there to deal with lesser threats and enemies, so the Grey Knights can solely focus on the demonic entities. By doing this the Crush there enemies by sheer overwhelming force, the Kriegsmen way. (Kriegsmen Clones can't succumb to demonic influence because of their lack of emotions, and past connections such as family)

The siege of Cadia is inspired by the real Siege of Candia (1648-1669) where the Ottomans besieged an island port city for 21 years while Europe sent reinforcements to hold the line. The ottomans eventually took the city but at tremendous cost

While I do disagree on the American influence on cadia (I believe that they are just sci fi guys with a Greek influence and Canadian naming because of how vast Cadia's fighting style is, which would result in not being tied to one specific country). I do have to say that this is a great video! I will be gladly waiting for part 2. Also fun fact, cadia could have also been named after arcadia! (A Greek mythological afterlife) and cadia was called arcadia back in the rogue trader days. Keep up the good work I have been really enjoying your videos :)

@@KrakDuk I think the Cadians actually predate the Starship Troopers movie by two or more years (the first Imperial Guard Codex was published in 1995, SST premiered at the tail end of 1997). They definitely predate the UNSC Marines from _Halo_ .😅
not to be that guy, but it is interesting to note that the cadians came out in 1995, two years before starship troopers and 6 years before halo CE, they looked slightly differnt than they do today however, I think it is still very clear that Cadians, USNC marines and the movie starshiptroopers took inspiration from the colonial marines and not from each other, its neat to see one concept explored in three wildly different ways
@KrakDuk
2 ай бұрын
Yeah some others pointed that out, however the cadians that came out on 1995 had a different look, the current iteration or previous iteration if you think the knee pad cadians constitute a new one. The ones with the large pauldrons, flak chest piece, and distinct helmet came out around 2003 which would be after CE. I can definitely see the argument of the Cadians and UNSC marines both just being offshoots of the colonial marines though. The biggest thing that makes the UNSC marines look like cadians to me was the large pauldrons and helmet shape. However, I can definitely see those being the designers exaggerating the Colonial Marines design elements. I agree it is pretty cool to see how inspirational Aliens was. I definitely feel it’s one of the most important pieces of sci fi Thanks for watching!
To be exact, most soldiers in WW1 used shovels or clubs, because the trenches were just too narrow to use effectively your bayonet. But, if you get out of the trench, the bayonet mounted on the rifle, gets its advnatage back, as its longer reach will allow you to kill your opponent before he can harm you ^^ So really, the only time a shovel is useful is close quarter in a trench, and of course building that trench XD

man, this is one of those ocasions where youtube actually shows me something really cool! another interesting fact about the Cadians is that those born and raised on the planet, before its destruction anyways had a minor mutation that usually made the Cadians's eyes of a violet coloration, this was due to Cadia being close to the Eye of Terror can't wait to see more of these with the other IG regiments!

Apparently the shovel thing in world war 1 was because bayonets often get stuck leaving you to either drop your rifle or be forced to slow down and pull it out ... which is bad when there are snipers and machine guns everywhere. Bonking them on the head with a shovel is just as incapacitating but much quicker. Does that tactic work on a a giant demon or big old ork. I dunno. But i can imagine a kriegsman being more then willing to find out
I would say the hostility of the planet Catachan is heavily inspired by the popular fictional world of Australia. Catachans are my favorite regiment. As someone who lives in a jungle-like country, I share familiar connections with these big burly men as I too participate in guerilla warfare with the voices in my head telling me government agents are outside my house👍 (Of course many of the things I said are jokes, except for the "Catachans being my favorite" part ✌️🤣)

Ok, if you do a second one, pls include the Talarn Desert Raiders. I would personally describe them as a historical what if? What if Laurence of Arabia commanded the 7th Armored nicknamed The Desert Rats. They won the biggest tank battle in imperium history, the 7th is a tank div which won some of the biggest tank battles in WW2, and employee hit and run tactics along side manuver warfare, hit and run: Laurence/The LRDG/ Detachment L (the mf S.A.S.), maneuver warfare: 7th Armored. Their esthetic is also very arab with the head wear wich is something that both Laurence, the LRDG (Laong Range Desert Group) and the S.A.S. adopted whilst in their respective desert. Also if you'll do the Armageddon Steel Legion, yes german WW2 BewegungsKrieg, but also on a random note, look at the helmets, they remind me of the FalshimJager helmet, german paratroopers. Also the trench coat could be of german inspiration since they had a few in WW2. Colors, idk, Desert fox/FS Jager. But yes please do another one!

@@KrakDuk You should talk about the modern Stormtroopers (Tempestus Scions) and old school 40K Stormtroopers in a video! A lot of people don’t know that the Tempestus Scions are not the original Stormtroopers.

@@hagank1111 oh yeah good point. One of my planned videos is going to be on the various types of imperial storm troopers like Kasrkin, scions, grenediers, etc. The old storm troopers looked cool, both the OG beret ones and more spec op looking stormtroopers that came after

Yep, part two for this is scheduled after Armageddon part 2. Thanks for watching!
Some people are however missing some references in the Guard Regiments. Like in the case of Vostroya. Most of people is saying that they are supposed to be the space russians but that's untrue. The style of thier uniforms of beautifull patterns on thier armors. thier origins from the Vostroyan nobility and the elite cavalry unit that looks like the Winged Hussars points at them being not space russians, but space Poles from the times of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Also on Cadian Shock troops. Also they have influence from 70’s Soviets and “WW3 European War scenario” (like Arx Gap being “Fulda Gap” place where enemies will make a large scale assault).
My first introduction to the Catachans was in the Cadia Stands book and if you know you know lol
It's my goal to make at least a platoon out of every Guard range GW has made throughout 40k. The Steel Legion are my favorite, but I like them all and I can probably easily convince myself to turn them all into companies over platoons.
The guard always interest me more because of how the succeed DESPITE the massive disadvantage. Especially compared to the Astartes. It always gets me down how GW seem to just focus on the Cadians when it comes to games or other media. When there are SO many diverse and interesting factions of IG.
kinda feel bad there are not that many regiments which have gotten love from GW. One of the cooler ones I discovered was a regiment from a mining world and EVERY single one of them has a knife that was passed though the generation. They are close quarters specialists. The funny part is that they have a surplus of chainswords, bcs they dont want to replace their knifes so the higher ups from their planet are using the chainswords for mining, bcs they found out that they are good at chipping rocks xDDDD

Wait that’s actually really cool lol. I never heard of them, do you remember what they’re called? Yeah I wish GW would bring back the regiments, unfortunately I don’t think they’d sell all that well though. Luckily we have 3rd party sellers like Victoria minis with cool regiments stuff. Thanks for watching!

@@KrakDuk its an honor to share obscure stuff like that ^^ there is sooo many cool regiments that are AMAZING but have no models. Like there is a planet that has a massive schola for Commisars, so EVERY guardsmen pulled from there is a mini commisar and has basic commisar training. There is a persian immortal looking dudes regiment that uses bolters!!! I can go on and on about how many cool things there are! Thats without getting into renegades!!!
Not sure if it's worth noting, but back when 40k was still envisioned as a tabletop CRPG called Rogue Trader, the intended main characters/posterboys of the setting were, well, the Rogue Traders. Sure, they're exceedingly rich with a lot of resources and are one rung down from the Emperor as far as the most powerful people in the Imperium go (the only people more powerful than them that aren't bound to a golden la-z-boy are the High Lords of Terra), but it is a little neat that from the very beginning, it was always about "normal" humans, not post-human half-demigods literally unable to make their own choices without extradimensional tampering. Those normal humans just so happened to be high-tier elites gallivanting around uncharted space with a harem of alien sex slaves and a piece of paper signed by God that says "I can do whatever I want"
Have you heard about this lesser known Imperial Guard regiment called the Arkan Confederates (who are basically just American Civil War era Confederates, but in space)? I think I remember they were featured in a Tau novel iirc

@@KrakDuk I'm honestly not sure, there doesn't seem to be much of any further lore on them, though I do find it weird they hadn't succeeded or rebelled from the Imperium just as the IRL Confederates had succeeded from the rest of the US if memory serves me right. Though I've also had this question I've been wanting to ask, if the Arkan Confederates fell to Chaos, which Chaos God would they most likely align themselves with?

@@ChaseDaOrk3767 ah I see. It’d also be cool if they rebelled but didn’t go chaos or genestealer. The lore talks about heretics and renegades, but rarely explores the renegades it seems. Thanks for sharing though, I love learning about new regiments and stuff

@@ChaseDaOrk3767 true, I’d probably lean towards nurgle for a confederate themed regiment, considering the confederacy broke away largely because they didn’t want to accept the changing times. Plus all the zany diseases during the civil War battles
Catachans my favorite, as an American I feel like we deserve an imperial guard regiment that’s why I dislike some people saying they’re aussies when there are multi racial catachan fighters resembling the mixed race American army that came about during the civil rights movement during the Vietnam war, don’t see many black Aussies in the jungles of Vietnam in popular depictions of the war lol

Well you Muricans already have the biggest piece of cake. The Cadians the poster boys of Guard).
2:20 Russia's more about attrition warfare - for example, in WW2 after blitzkrieg was stopped, German casualties were bigger than Soviet due to those tactics.
Ok now I started to like Imperialis Auxilia even more. Especially Cadians and Kriegers. But I like Pretorians too. The literally Red Coats in space)
Great video! Even though I don't own any Imperial Guard models (I wish I did though) I do love the Imperial Guard. I would love you to cover the Armageddon Steel Legion (They are very underrated IMO) and Valhallan Ice Warriors (Basically WW2 Soviet Red Army in space and Ciaphas Cain's bros).

As a Canadian, I love the fact we get to be one of the best Imperial Guard regiments.
I’d like to see the more obscure regiments from the older editions. I saw one that was Revolutionary War inspired, along with the Severan Dominate and there obvious roman influences, and I know there’s a book about a regiment that was inspired by the Civil War fighting the Tau. But I haven’t read it yet.

If possible, could you do this with some of the space marine chapters. I only know some of the basic facts about them, like the ultramarines are named after a popular paint color.
Some other Catachan characters might also have some (rather different) inspiration - Colonel Straken and Sergeant Harker might be inspired by Sharpe and Harper from the Sharpe series (books/TV)
Yes, an appreciator of the emperor's TRUE finest
I find it funny how many ppl talk crap about ppl using shovels in ww1.. like those military shovels werent nothing to laugh at.. some soldiers sharpened there edges and even unsharpned ones could still cleave thru someone..
@KrakDuk

I don’t mind them using shovels, I think it is a cool concept that fits thematically. I just think it’s just silly the extent people seem to think they do. It’d be like if in WWI soldiers would toss their rifles aside to get in shovel battles all the time and shovel tanks. But that’s just the nature of any meme, things gets flanderized to insanity
