To be fair, this isn't actually unusual or necessarily "bad." A lot of companies don't turn a real profit for the first few years; that's why almost all small businesses fail. Owners don't realize you have to keep pumping money back into the business to improve it and stay afloat.

The skincare ones are especially useless and in need to go. Most of the preppy\luxury stuff is completely worthless on a scientific level, it's unbalanced, untested or uses formulas that are too strong with too much active ingredients and no skin can withstand it long term. Plus you can get very good products, that actually work, with a 30 dollars or euros budget at the pharmacy or any reputable seller. I studied a lot the chemical compositions of these preppy formulas, and most of them have literally no scientific basis, like....ingredients have no proof of actually doing something or working in the concentrations provided(for example any claims of skincare with snail mucin or collagen for antiage results is total bs). Or worse, they have a concentration too high with nothing to soothe the skin(like most vitamin C, retinoids or hyaluronic acid preppy serums and creams crap you find in Sephora and similar places). Avoid those brands like the plague, if they aren't sold in a pharmacy but in a dumbass makeup store, there's a reason for it lol

Simply Nailogical still runs Halo Taco and it's doing well, so I think it boils down to either having good business sense or hiring the right people to help you and to actually CARE about your business, and not treat it as just a cash-grab.

Even with Holo Taco, which I've bought quite a bit of, it's too many launches all the time, and it looses it's spark - I probably would have bought more collections, but I can't afford to drop that much every couple of months, and then because there is sooooo much of it, I stop checking for new stuff. Still love Cristine, Ben, and the product though - and wish them the best, but they rich as hell now, so I think it's smart they don't try to play the 'relatable' shtick

Also Popflex. I saw several people mentioning both Casey and Cristine as very responsible business woman. They both share the ups and downs of their companies.

Influencer brands equals impulse purchases. Beauty brands equals staple repeat purchases. Influencers have to constantly relaunch new products to get more buys. Revlon/elf/huda (beauty brands) have a loyal base that buys the same items month by month year after year.

That’s so true! I always keep going back to elf to buy the same eyebrow pencil (which is great) rather than getting fancy palette that I won’t dip into as much. I honestly thing down the line people will return to staple products rather than impulse buying-especially in this economy.

You’ve made a really good point. I think for influencer brands to become these household names in which buyers are loyal to, they have to 1) actually be good and 2) have longevity.

I am majoring in business and we were told that profit is not made till after 5 years in business . What Manny and Laura said sounds normal 🤷🏻‍♀️. Just because you have a business it doesn't mean you make millions that's unrealistic.

Manny never has big launches and Laura has tons of affiliate links especially for Amazon which she also makes money from. Also, Laura had a lucrative sponsorship with Shein that allowed her to buy a beach house in Destin, Florida. Manny mentioned it in a video last year and Laura shut him down quickly as if she didn’t want anyone to know. Most of these influencers are not formally educated and are not business savvy. Manny’s parents run Luna beauty regarding the business decisions. Manny is one of the few influencers who did get a college education. I don’t feel sorry for these influencers they all live in million dollar mansions, drive expensive luxury cars, go on vacations often, carry expensive designer purses etc. They are doing pretty darn good! 🙄

Manny took a page out of Jeffrey Star's book and he & his parents are 100% owners of Lunar Beauty. He has no other investors. Laura, on the other hand, has had to transform her entire brand into a lifestyle brand, selling clothing, candles and bags. The only makeup she is currently selling is body oil. She did a partnership with Shein to keep herself in the financial bracket she believes she belongs in. Her makeup was not good or unique enough to keep her brand alive. Her older, racist tweets finished her as a makeup brand. Manny DOES have a college degree. All he makes is makeup. He was smart enough to remove his brand from Sephora once it came time for him to decide whether or not he was willing to sell them shares of Lunar Beauty. His parents make the business decisions and I suspect at least one of them owned a small business in the past.

They just did a Collab with lunar beauty a few months ago and she is still selling all of their other products as well. It’s way more then just body oil. Her makeup brand still exists. She hasn’t launched anything in a while though besides the Collab.

I don't feel sorry either, it's obvious that if their businesses survive it's not because they have business talent but because they are rich influencers, they are extremely fortunate to be able to have brands that don't make anything or to focus on investing without losing tons of money.

I just think manny and Laura are lying. Tbh I just stopped believing these influencers a long time ago. Rich ppl wanna come off as one of us. Not rich.

Why are people assuming they’re telling the truth? “Oh yeah I made about 2 million net last year, and it paid for my new birkin!” - people would be up in arms saying they aren’t relatable, should lower their prices, and how dare they show off the money they make off their following. Investing all the money back into your brand is not the same as 'not earning money/a lot from my brand'. They are simply choosing to not take a salary. This is a privilege and most business owners cannot do this. It means they are already *rich* and is also probably v attractive to investors and part of a funding schedule. There are plenty of business owners in the beauty space making a *lot* of money. Made by Mitchell made £1 million from TikTok alone

I'm glad you said this. The guy saying they're bad in business is either trying to get clout, or is not paying attention... If you're such a good business man, why can you not understand they're re-investing which is why they're not having the net profits sit in their product.

I think the influencers do see more money than they admit. They are trying to be relatable and look righteous for "investing" money back in to their businesses, but it backfires when professionals call them out saying they aren't running their businesses right 😂😂 Just because you aren't taking home a million dollar wage doesn't mean you aren't getting any benefit 🙄🙄

Influencer market is oversaturated. And their bussinesses too. People are not in the "im gonna shop makeup from this influencer cuz i like them" era. I think it is better to not be a celebrity brand.

I do feel like out of anyone though, Patrick star is actually getting somewhere with consistency and having products people will rebuy. Especially performers and drag artist, he really created amazing products helps with those kind of makeups. The setting spray, very long wear foundation powder, giant makeup wipes, etc… so that’s cool at least!! Trixie mattel is always using his products along with Lady Gaga’s makeup artist (uses the finishing spray)

It was fine When there were a few, but when everyone and their mom has a beauty brand, the whole thing loses its spark

As someone who runs their own business as a nail tech, a majority of my money goes to paying bills or paying for products. But even I've become smarter with spending money like waiting for sales and bulk buying. I only pay myself a minor amount every week to pay for gas, food, fun night out, etc. but that's also bc it's only ME running my business. These influencers have teams. they have to pay these people (marketing, warehouse, chemist, etc) and pay for the product production whether it be packaging, formula, etc. And i'm sure for rent on the building or utilities of the building too. I feel that's something that most people don't think about when starting a brand. When Patrick Star talks abt how he's not making 8mil, it could be bc he sees it more as his BRAND is making 8mil but not him himself. Like with any company, to be successful you need to keep producing and evolving to become better than you were before. And that takes money to do so. Maybe they are all doing something wrong, but it's good to pay the people that work behind the scenes to make the product and make the business successful than to pay yourself first as the owner. If they pay themselves first, then what money do they have left to create that next best thing for their business?

Not a JC fan but just objectively speaking the guy missed the boat so hard.. if he had launched a makeup brand a few years earlier when he was at his absolutely peak he would have made millions

I don't think Manny and Laura don't get a paycheck from their brands, I think they just don't *profit* from it, which honestly must be their choice. Because they know they have another source of income, they choose to invest all the revenue back into the brand, which is smart. Edit: Same for Emma. She herself said it "I'm fortunate enough to be able to do this"

If Patrick Star can't make 7 figures from his brand, even with a partner, there's no hope for anybody.

@@adrian102 As much as I hate to say this, that’s because Jeffree is actually a really good businessperson and he’s had a long running career. He did have a successful music career before fully venturing into makeup and a loyal fanbase. He also has really good quality makeup and also had other income variations to support his brand (making merch for other influencers/companies), his own factory, and then other investments.

I think a thing that guy in the Rolls Royce didn't mention is that influencers are selling products based on their image and not just a product they are making for the purpose of having a successful business. An influencer's biggest market is their fan base and that's really the only people that are buying their products. I don't follow any of these people mentioned in the video and have only learned about their products from watching Tea Spill so I for one wouldn't go out of my way to purchase their items without knowing if they are good or not. If they want their brands to turn profits then they need to work on marketing to people that aren't their fan base.

I feel like if we’re going to talk about successful influencer brands, Holo Taco by SimplyNailgoical NEEDS to be part of the conversation. She’s super transparent about prices, profit margins, costs, etc. and while I don’t think she has a huge takeaway from Holo Taco she’s mainly just as her podcast now and was still able to quite her government job to focus on running Holo Taco full time.

Jeffree is the only brand that seems to be thriving...

Agreed. He isn't selling out full launches in the first hour like he was in 2018 and 2019, but he is still consistently selling high volume. And people will go back to repurchase when they run out because there isn't anything better quality on the market at his price point. He has always been transparent, has always had great customer service and a high quality product. He may have lost SOME customers to controversy and his past, but a lot of them got over it and came back because his products are that good. Even his merch is good quality. Hell, I'm wearing a t-shirt from a Halloween Mystery Box I got in 2018 right now. Haha

True, JSC has been around since 2014. Laura Lee and Manny, for example, launched their brands around 2017. That's only a 3 year difference. By the time they launched, JSC was a multi-million dollar brand. If they aren't profiting by now (which I doubt is actually true), it's not because the company is "new".

As someone who is about to start a business and learning about the finances of it all, what they are saying is quite true😂. When you start your own business early on all revenue goes back into advancing and scaling. You can pay yourself from your brand but at the beginning stages it’s not going to be a lot.

I run my own company - no investors, no seed money etc and honestly I don't make a whole lot of money from it. I am in a completely different market than them, but it's still really difficult. Finding suppliers, labor for making the products, research. All of it. I do everything with my company since I can't afford to hire anyone to do anything else, but my name is on everything and I want to stand behind my products. I celebrated 11 years in business this month, and (looking at sales from this year), I actually reached a significant 4 digits in sales since leaving a popular "hand crafted marketplace" website and launching my own website just for my brand 5 years ago.

The real problem is that the makeup industry is so saturated that the only way to really survive is by doing unique marketing or having innovated products (which most of these influencers do not do).

Okay, I used to run multiple family businesses before we sold everything during the pandemic... they are calling it "reinvesting," but that term can mean a lot of different things (as far as what the money is going towards). I would bet that they are being guided (smartly) to reinvest earnings because that's how you reduce your tax owed to the government. There are only certain things you can write off as business expenses in order to reduce your owed taxes, so if you haven't put earnings towards more employees, machines, building upgrades or land purchases, your tax bill is going to be big. Like Emma Chamberlain mentions, she's "building" her company... large tax write-offs (big purchases or spending into your business) can take literal years off of owing taxes. Just didn't hear you (or them, frankly) make this known and I think it's important. 🤓

These people are all so young and honestly it’s so annoying to hear them whining about not profiting from their brands. Everyone who watches you probably can’t afford to buy your products even though they’re working full time on their feet and making a fraction in a year of what you make in a month just making KZread videos, tiktoks and instagram posts. No one forced you to start a brand or fund it and no one feels badly that you’re not making millions from it. Emma is literally sitting on her couch complaining about not making money meanwhile she was on the met gals red carpet, like have some perspective before you even post that. Ugh

Ok so Emma says her coffee brand is basically a hobby because she doesn’t cash out much profit…. But you own your company so re-investing in it is creating equity and upping her net worth… so she is totally making money and she came off kinda entitled. She should be thrilled she is making enough to even re-invest. Not to mention if she is re-investing that means she isn’t paying taxes. (You only pay taxes on net income)

I really like his products, amazing quality and also you can see the effort he puts into his brand.

I believe a little bit of both. Some really do put the money back into the business, and others I feel are just trying to be relatable and say they dont make much when they actually do. Which is more of a turnoff than they think.

I loved the beauty influencer era. The drama was legendary but I can say with certainty that we aren’t missing out on much these day! True crime and podcasts are way more entertaining.

And those first three brands all wound up in Boxycharm subscription boxes

I think Selfless by Hyram is in Target now. The difficulty in maintaining a business is beyond being an influencer especially in such an industry like beauty. SO much goes into it long term and these people don’t have the resources (human and financial) or influence yet. Why do you think brands like Fenty are with big corps like Coty, LVMH, etc? So much happens beyond the scene.

ONE SIZE is amazing❤❤❤❤! Quality wise it's a staple to my make up routine. And yes, one size is with a lpt of investors that's why patrick doesnt earn that much. LUNAR BEAUTY team on the other hand is the worst. If you know how to treat your costumers, you'll be loyal to that brand. I ordered mystery box and got all 3 size to atleast get the exclusive necklace and not a single box came in. I mean if i'm a brand owner i'll make sure atleast 1 box will have the exclusive knowing the costumer spend a hard earned money.. so that my last purchase from lunar beauty.

I think the only two influencer brands who got saved as of late was Hyram's because it's now hosted in Target, as well as Naturium being purchased by elf Cosmetics

I used to work with Hyram at Saks (he was working at the Trish McEvoy counter) and it just goes to show anyone who starts making KZread videos can just start their own brand. It’s like damn that could’ve been me 😂😂

the second a beauty guru started a brand i stopped trusting their reviews. They had a reason to be dishonest about their reviews because they would literally be reviewing their competion.

I am not actually crying that it is influencers don’t make money. People after pandemic buy less make up stuff, as they realise that don’t need that much. even with me, I have maybe 20 eyeshadow pallets when technically I use maybe 4 colours. I also stopped using foundation.I even quit coffee😂

I purchased a JC sisters black fan a few years ago. I bought it for my teenage daughters shared space. However, after paying the shipping to Wales, which was already more than the purchase cost, I was then told I had to pay an extra £20 and collect it from the sorting office due to custom fees. I didn't bother and it may still be there waiting for me. JC customer service team never even bothered to respond to my polite email requesting an explanation, or a refund upon returning.

Why does no one ever talk about xoBeauty??? Shaaanxo has such a wonderful makeup brand and I feel like NO ONE ever talks about it

This makes a lot of sense to people that work in finance for any company because a very harsh reality of having your own business is that some to most of your customers are not going to pay their bills in a timely manner, and if those customers are your largest customers, it will take up the majority of your sales, and you will most likely be giving them a discounted price and longer terms to incentivise them to buy the product, and if you’re already producing at a loss you are screwed because you still have to supply them product and then wait 30 to 60 days and in some cases 90 days to get paid and you gotta find the money to supply them products from somewhere in the meantime. Which is why people get investors but then you gotta pay your investors as well so it’s a double edge sword, it’s not easy and unless you have a large amount of capital when you open your company, and can run at a loss for at least 2 to 5 years you’re gonna go bust real quickly.

Honestly I’ve tried many of these influencers brands products, although never anything from James and I just never will … and the only ones that I’ve repeatedly repurchased has been jeffree star and one size. I can’t lie one size powder and cheek clapper oh they are divine. Worth every penny

As an independent business owner I understand the revolving door. Before I thought it would be easy money but I honestly never see a dime it just goes right back into my business to invest more quality products but I’m also not even a year into my business

all of this is honestly so sad, i've been working in opening my own small business but hearing big names say they make zero money is crazy discouraging

Don't be discouraged! Alot of them are probably lying to fish for sales or are just trying to come off as "humble" or "relatable" meanwhile they drive exotic cars and live in big houses 🥴 alot of it could also be greed! If they are 'only' walking away with 500k, to THEM its nothing (because they are already rich) but to the everyday person its like hitting a jackpot.

Crazy to think all these trends would last forever. Interests change when you get older.

They still own the companies, which are becoming more and more valuable as they scale operations and continue to improve margins. They could sell out to a larger brand or stop scaling up any time they want. Taxes alone can be enough of a reason not to take an owner’s salary draw.

the plan with influencer brands is to build a market and then sell out to VC in 5-10 years; it's the kylie sale to COTY playbook

i work at a sephora and sure we sell out of the primers and setting spray, but we’re fully over stocked on the rest of the brand. so only some of it flies off the shelves

I know that where I am, businesses are classified as start-ups for the first 15 years… so it doesn’t surprise me that they’re putting the money straight back in. The transition from being an impulse purchase to a trusted staple takes time

There is a difference between they need/want the money vs they don't need the money and the money goes to the business. They probably choose to not take a cut and put that into expanding their own brand.

I am happy that Ryan Dubs made a success, honestly good for him. But the logo obsession, the huge Ralph Lauren logo and RR in the background of the tic tok is a little bit tacky

I’m not shocked that they aren’t making profit over costs. I went to college for business management, and I run my own, and I’m consult for a friends clothings business. Her last collection cost well over 2k and she’s doing it by herself. Has been in business almost a year, still hasnt turned profit. Most businesses don’t turn profit for years, due to manufacturing, materials, investors (if any) and many other factors.

I purchased from Laura Lee once , it was on sale for less then 20$ , the person who did the tag with the custom declaration put the regular price and added the amount I paid for shipping to it , which never happened with any of my numerous purchases elsewhere. I got to pay customs on like 90$ for a purchase under 20$ which would be custom free plus she used the most expensive ground carrier. I emailed LLL and they didn’t understand anything of what I said. I used to buy from Lunar Beauty , i liked their quality before it got manufactured in China but as it was pulled out of Sephora and Beauty Bay it’s just not worth the customs and high international shipping to Canada.

Since it's the topic, curious if the influencer woman that quietly created Naturium skincare is seeing money from the brand? Seems really successful...Its in Target, well priced... wouldn't have known it was an influencer brand til she got in lil drama about hating on Inkey

I can understand if influencers didn’t want to disclose what their business makes or how much they take

I love how people claim all this money goes back into the business.. Mmhmm… Their just trying not to get caught by the IRS because they can claim a “business expense.” And write it off.

I always just assumed that they’re trying to be relatable and be like, “oh I’m not making a ton of money! I do it because I love it so much!” And I never believed them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Honestly it could be a combination of a lot of things rising prices and bad business deals the influencers sign. This is just another example of how influencers be fronting like they are making all this money everything you see on social media is not true

A well run, financially sound business owners do this regularly. Most start up of any kind involve the owner/creator involved not getting paid for a bit. A that’s totally ok. It’s like buying a house, you don’t take out a mortgage on it unless you’re going to put some of it back into the house But also as the owner of my business always says “gotta sharpen your pencils”

Because our mindset on beauty and skin care has changed. It's not needed so many pallets. It's so redundant. Instagram and tiktok has changed how we spend and see trends.

Maybe its a good thing that they put it back into the brands, sometimes for people to make a shit ton of money off their brands they have to pay others less or raise prices way too high...

Still if you want good influencers brand it's LH Cosmetics by Linda, Jeffree star cosmetics by Jeffree star , Huda beauty by Huda Khattan and em cosmetics by Michelle

Ryan made a really good point, beauty is lucrative, if they're not making money, they are doing something wrong with their pricing, advertising, product choices, whatever, and forget beauty, if you're running a business and you're not making money, or aren't on track to make money within a reasonable timeframe/ after spending a reasonable amount of initial investment, you are doing something wrong, that's not a business, it's a mistake

5:55 There’s a huge difference between Laura, Manny & Patrick. Laura & Manny have ZERO investors. They started up with no one backing them. Patrick had investors who back him. That’s why he’s able to release products & put them in Sephora. Sephora charges the brands for returns, that’s why Sephora’s return policy is so relaxed bc it’s costing them nothing. That’s why Manny pulled his from Sephora. He was getting charged for return pallets & causing his bottom line to decrease. So if they sold 1,000 palettes in one month but had 300 returns, he only had revenue on 700 palettes & had a lost on the other 300. So for an Indy Brand like Lunar Beauty, that’s a huge loss. Patrick has backers so if he sells 1,000 palettes, gets 300 returns, profits off 700 palettes, those 300 palettes aren’t effecting him the same as it does Manny bc Patrick has people to bail him out. I’m sure One Size does make at the very least 8 million but bc he has investors they are getting paid back first, then a % goes back into the brand & what’s left is profit for Patrick, which is probably a revenue of around $1mil give or take. So he needs to stop acting like One Size doesn’t make $8mil bc it probably makes closer to $10mil (have to look up numbers). Idk why he’s acting like he’s struggling, like his brand isn’t making $ when it is.

the beauty industry is one of the largest industries, but it’s also so saturated. a laura lee brand will have such a niche audience, especially not being in stores. it won’t have the same scale of audience as a charlotte tilbury, makeup by mario, or any of those other big brands

Tbh it seems like a PR thing to say that all profits go back into the company, especially if you know your market is young people that may not have a lot of disposable income. I think you have to downplay your revue all long as “regular” people are your main customers.

My brother went to business school and is insane the difference of him working in his projects and mines that i'm a dentist with no formation as entrepreneur 😂

After so much drama over the past few years, Im not surprised that this is happening. Its lost its steam.

The only influencer brand I buy from is Christen Dominique's Dominique Cosmetics. Their eyeshadow formulation is top notch. And their complexion products are also good.
