In this “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) episode, Peter delves into the often misunderstood concept of inflammation. He first defines inflammation and differentiates between acute inflammation and chronic inflammation, the latter of which is linked to aging and a plethora of age-related diseases. Peter breaks down the intricate relationship between chronic inflammation, obesity, and metabolic health, and highlights the signs that might suggest someone may be suffering from chronic inflammation. From there, the conversation centers on actionable advice and practical steps one can take to manage and minimize chronic inflammation. He explores how diet plays a crucial role, including the potential benefits of elimination diets, and he examines the impact of lifestyle factors such as exercise, sleep, and stress management. Additionally, he discusses the relevance of food inflammatory tests and concludes by examining the potential benefits and drawbacks of drugs and supplements in managing inflammation.
In this sneak peek, we discuss:
00:00 - Intro
00:09 - Defining inflammation (and the cultural impact of Napoleon Dynamite)
06:54 - Acute vs chronic inflammation
10:27 - The connection between chronic inflammation, aging, and age-related diseases
18:53 - The impact of inflammation on metabolic health
In the full episode, we also discuss:
-Understanding and diagnosing chronic inflammation: blood tests and other approaches, and challenges with measurement;
-Factors that contribute to low-level chronic inflammation;
-Minimizing inflammation through diet;
-The important role of fiber for gut health and inflammation;
-A closer look at the impact of trans fats and saturated fats on overall health;
-Why Peter prefers dietary fiber from food sources over supplements;
-Debunking “superfoods”: emphasizing proven methods over marketing claims for reducing inflammation;
-Is there any value in over-the-counter food inflammatory tests?;
-Food elimination diets: how they work, symptoms and markers to watch, challenges and limitations;
-Identifying dietary triggers for gut-related symptoms through low-FODMAP diets like the “carnivore diet”;
-Dairy: the complex role of dairy on inflammation and individual responses
-Wheat: the complexities and conflicting evidence around wheat's inflammatory effects
-How exercise influences inflammation
-How sleep quality and duration impacts inflammation
-The potential impact of chronic psychological stressors on inflammation
-The impact of oral health on inflammation and overall well-being
-The role of medications in managing chronic inflammation
-Supplements: evaluating the efficacy of various anti-inflammatory supplements
-Parting thoughts and takeaways
-More.

    I'm an RN and one major reason I would never work in an operating room is that the surgeon's determine which 'music' will be listened to while the rest of the staff have no voice. Sometimes the 'music' is too loud, too Metal, too loud Rock, etc. Also, I don't think it is responsible to take one's eyes off the patient to look at clips of your favorite show. The focus should be on the patient and not the surgeon. I wouldn't advertise what really goes on in operating rooms.

    I have chronic inflammation from an auto-immune condition and I absolutely cannot live without the Protein inhibitor-like drugs mentioned in the video. If you find the right one that blocks a certain channel (in my case interleukin-17), it can remove inflammation almost entirely.

    The Napoleon intro was too funny… one my best friends from pharmacy school was from Preston, ID where the movie was filmed. Many of our late night study sessions ended with some quotes from the movie. He knew many of the local characters who showed up in the film. He was probably the smartest student in our class but just funny and unassuming. Peter thanks for the info on the podcasts. I get more from them than most CE classes. I’ll have to pay you with change.

    Just finished reading No Time To Die in the NYer. Never heard of you before then...agreed with all you said about aging. You say that with each decade after 30 we lose a meaningful amount of muscle mass and cardo fitness. This certainly happened to me since my chronic fatigue diagnosis...so depressing. I'm already in my 70s, so cant expect a lot of change at this point. Pleased to know i'm doing a lot of things right. I carry heavy bags of groceries in both hands despite my hip surgery that left one of my legs a bit shorter. I am definitely on an anti aging journey. Cheers!
